I want to add in help like functions for the members to add sites, etc. Has anyone already developed this material?

I think when you click "Add" button everything is clear: you just have to fill the form in order to add anything, no instructions needed. And here's general FAQ for end-users: http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/DolUsersFAQ http://boonexpert.com |
Yes, we have created a whole set of help tutorials/guides; they are particular to our site. Our graphic designer on the team did screenshots and created the tutorials on his graphic programme. Having visual tutorials are so much better than plain text; the members can actually see the buttons they should push, etc. Then I created a series of pages using the page builder that included these help guides. I then added links to each help guide in the language key for help. Our members click on the help button on our main menu and goes to the help page with these links; they click on the link for the particular help guide they wish to view, such as how to upload a video or how to customise their profile page. We are constantly adding to our help guides as needed. Geeks, making the world a better place |
It sounds like you have really hit the mark. My members don't seem to add anything but photos and probably because they are not sure what to do. What is your site name geek_girl? |
Here is video tutorial for adding avatar but it's on my language, maybe it will be usefull for others... I will create more video tutorials... |
It sounds like you have really hit the mark. My members don't seem to add anything but photos and probably because they are not sure what to do. We also set up a full forum with subjects across the board. One board on the forum is for site members to ask questions about the site or to post "wishes" for the site. You might want to set up a board titled "Our Site" or some such thing. Then create a few forums on the board, "I Need Help", "Wish List", "Announcements", etc. This will give a public forum for your members to get the help they need to ask questions about the site. Plus, the site members can help to answer questions and be a part of your support team. You can also learn about where improvements need to be made to the site. Geeks, making the world a better place |
The video tutorials can help as well. Embed the videos into your help pages so members can view them without going to YouTube or Vimeo or what not. Geeks, making the world a better place |
This is not exactly about how to add a site but you can edit as needed. It has really helped for my sites. http://www.boonex.com/forums/forum/Tips-Tricks-Sharing-80.htm#topic/FAQ-or-Frequently-Asked-Questions-.htm ManOfTeal.COM a Proud UNA site, six years running strong! |
The FAQ is one of the language keys, just put FAQ into the filter box and click the checkbox. Then edit the key and add Newton's code to the language key and in short order you have a nice FAQ. You can insert images as well if you wish; just upload them to a directory on your site and add the image tag. Geeks, making the world a better place |
There is a really nice module by modzzz which allows admins and members to create tutorials on how to accomplish anything on your site. OR you can use modzzz FAQ module to accomplish the same thing. I have bought both of these modules and they are great. http://ModMyCMS.com --> Dolphin Hacks &Mods |
The FAQ may be suitable but I am not so sure about the Tutorials Module. All the tools for creating a rich graphical help guides is built into Dolphin. There are plenty of free graphic programmes on the net for creating the graphics. To take a screenshot of a page is as simple as pressing the PrtScn key on a windows system. Then open the graphic application, create a new file, paste in the screenshot, and crop, add text, draw boxes etc. The GIMP is a nice one but it takes some learning to use. You want to optimise the image so it loads quickly. Create a directory on your site for your images to use in your help guides. You can use the media directory for this, say, /media/help_guides. Then you go to page builders and create a new page, say how_to_add_videos, add a column, then add a html block, and then you add the text you want to add, add the images which will have a url of http://myniftysite.tld/media/help_guides/file_name.ext; as an example, you saved out the images for adding a video as add_video_1.jpg, add_video_2.jpg, etc. When the page is as you like it, click on the view page and see if it is correct and then you can go back and make changes if necessary. If it is OK, copy the URL from the browser address bar. Now open the help file language key. In that key add a link to the How to add videos help guide. <a href="the url you copied from the address bar">How to add a video</a></br> and you can add in more links to more help guides. Now when someone clicks on the help button on your site, it will open the help page and they will see the links to all the help guides you have created. They click on the link and will go to the help guide.
I can not share my help guides because I have a custom templates and custom main menu, etc. It would only confuse your members. It is not hard to create nice help guides with graphics but it does take a bit of time. We have been adding help guides as we went along and I have a team member that handles the graphics. Note, the language key you want is _HELP and to make it easier to edit the key first create the text for the key in a text editor and then just cut and paste. Store the text file locally and then any time you want to add a link to a help guide, just open that file, add the link, save, then copy all, and open the help key, select all, and paste. Editing the key directly can be tricky do the limited window. Geeks, making the world a better place |
