I was just on a forum and came across a topic that got me curious-
People were comparing Facebook and Google+ in reference to video chat.
Does anyone have any comparative experience with these and our video chat in Dolphin?
I haven't launched my site yet, but know my members are going to be critically aware and experienced with video chat, so I really don't want to fall short in that area.
Opinions?

That's a scary thought....

if you wish to not fall short in regards to video chat, then dont offer it on your site. the AV chat is a relic, and they seem to refuse to update it.

The best thing to do is to try to use it....
I did an experiment buy having just 3 people videochat together. (I did have crap broadband and a slow server though). The results, though useable, were not good. It was slow.
I did howeaver find it to be great fun. I was even able to include a webcan effects program which was a right laugh.
I will not cut it from my site because I want to see how popular it could be with my users. If it is popular then I will find a better way to provide this service (could a reliable system be coded from the ground up?). If it is not popular or is unuseable then I will cut it from service.
Time and users will tell I guess.

Many, of not most of my members are going to be deaf. My site revolves around communicating- 'Tis yet another key reason why I chose Dolphin. Reading articles here and there Dolphin's video features where being promoted as though they were key features. They never spoke about the quality, I never have had the time to or desire to video chat, but assumed it was like video phone. Video Phone is like a video camera...many deaf people are migrating over to it. My brothers have it, but they have to carry this "Box" around with them and hook it up when they are visiting verious places for extended amounts of time.
Hey what about this internal Video Calls system.... Please tell me it isn't just another way to repackage video chat. How about this? I know there was talk about it somewhere.
Anyone know?

I've had up to 25 people at a time in my A/V chat with no problems. The video quality is MUCH better than my competitors, and everyone comments on it. The audio can be choppy at times, but that may be the server. |
That's good to hear ron. Gosh, it sounds terribly lazy, but I still haven't got around to testing it myself. It seems the list of things to do to get a site up and ready goes on forever, so I've just stayed busy with all the other things I have yet to do. I must say though, it will be what it will be when the time comes to use it, is kinda how I'm rolling at the moment. To be honest, I've peeked in on a number of Deaf websites with video chat and was shocked to find their video chat "No Longer Available" or otherwise seeing a message like "Video Chat is Under Construction" or "Sorry for the inconvenience, We are currently trying to make improvements to Video Chat." I'm really curious what the story is behind these instances. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with a difference between having a free hosting solution and having a RMS host. The more I think about it, I'm going to make it a point to test it ASAP as suggested...Perhaps tonight.
Thanks guys!
