Getting you website popular?

Hi, I finished my website, everything works perfect and.... nothing. It is just a dead website. So I got a plan from http://revisitors.com which seemed not to be a fake traffic generator. So I hope that from the 5000 visitors who will see my website some of them will register. 

But could you people that have a successful website with member and forums,  could you please let me know how to promote it, except of adwords etc. Any ideas about making noise about it? And get people into it?

What you should do since your site is geared at gaming, you need to join other "gaming" sites, forums and in your profile add your website link. After a few months web bots see that link.

Submit your site to websitesubmission.com or something simular.

don't do the fake or paid for links, your site could be tagged as a spam site before you even get started.

careful what you ask for, I honestly thought I was ready for real traffic. I have an awesome business cloud from hfw and it does what it is suppose to, but yesterday i got 10 thousand REAL hits in one hour, had about 500 try to join at once and shut my whole server down, the mail alone brought it to a stand still. I stripped the index as much as I could but still when you got hundreds of people trying to join at once the server demand is unreal!

If it is a paid website then try using the "Voucher Codes" module from Anton to post some "Join for FREE" codes on FB and twitter.... This has worked well for us.

 If you don't mind me asking, how did you get 10k+ real hits unexpectedly like that?

I get fluctuations on my site, but it's to the effect of +/- 15% normal traffic depending on campaigns or search trends.

i have a glasgow rangers fan site (uk football)  and do a radio call in show there .. yesterday was the first game day we did the show,, im pretty sure we had wayyyyy more then 10 thousand, but when the server was down for 45 minutes of game time hits didnt get counted

ps 10 thousand real hits a day is not hard to do at all, i get that on my http://www.thegettogether.net/ site daily, problem yesterday was i got that in 30 to 45 minutes

Some of these traffic systems sound very good, BUT in fact most of these sites and packages deliver USELESS traffic that Google and other search engines do not find valuable and will not really help you!

They deliver ANY traffic (mainly traffic not interested in what you offer) and as a result the visitors land on your page and leave within less than 10 secs!  this makes what you are paying and getting in return pointless.

To get real results you need to do things that hard way >> put aside plenty of time and get things done yourself that will drive your site forwards ....

I would suggest adding some gaming related contents as its what your site is about.

Gaming articles (must be unique)

Game tutorials and reviews etc.

Social Bookmark and share the contents you have and will add (generates quality one way links)

Set-up and promote gaming competitions

Make sure your pages and contents are SEO strong for search engines.

This is just a few ideas but will ALL certainly make your site and efforts 100% better and increase popularity etc

You would get nothing but junk traffic from that site, SEO your site and get visitors there for free. If your niche is popular, target longtail keywords. I have almost 1500 members and haven't paid for any advertising or any of those lame traffic exchange programs, stay clear of them.

 you know sadly enough your plea is heard, however think about this, you are asking here on the forum, how to make your site sucessful. nobody in their right mind is going to tell you how to make your site sucessful. you should have had that as a contingency as part of your business plan. why would a person on here tell you how to make your site sucesful, when basically everybody on here is running dolphin as their status quip pro quo?

they would simply look at your site, take your idea, and if they know how to make a site sucessful, run with your idea. 

analogy, if i know where the gold is do you think i am going to stand up and say hey everybody looking for gold, here is the gold vein, come here and get the gold. stupid assed idea wouldnt you think.

if you didnt have a plan, then you should have never embarked on the journey.

I see it all the time on here.. I went through ity myself.... You build the site without a secure plan - launch the site - nothing happens - you re,develop the site - re,launch the site - nothing happens.... then you panic more because it is soaking up cash..... then if you are lucky you get seo right and get some hits....

I think niche sites are about going to your niche market and mugging them into visiting your site....

 sorry to say, but you do not have a business cloud account. the purpose of cloud is to spin up on demand, be it commanded or required, the resources needed to keep your site running. with what you state here 500 try to join, that would equate to rough 3500 or so http requests, which means the default was modified to accept that number of requests. that is not what cloud hosting is. to host in the cloud means you have on the fly access to resources that would prevent exactly this from happening. 

how do i know this, well i am not phsycic. i maintain a few sites where the analytics are not hits, but actual visitors in excess of 1 million. yes one million, but this is not done on a shoestring budget, this is not done on hfw, or bluehost, or hostgator, this is a specifically engineered and designed infrastructure. none of these run of the mill hosting service providers are going to even start to tell you what you need for infrastructure. why, because you are not paying them to. IT administrators start @ $130/hour, most oft, setting up proper infrastructure takes 500 to 1000 hours. so you can see where i am going here, it takes money to make money. if your server failed, then it was not cloud infrastructure i can assure  you. i work with AWS, cloudstack, openstack, and several other cloud iterations. but it all comes with a price. a price which many here have no idea or ability to cover. 

 another part of this is i was part of a project Blastoff Network http://blastoffnetwork.com had huge financial backing, target, walmart, jcpenny, SAS, home depot and many many others. they spent $2.7m on infrastructure, but the Chief Engineer had no clue what he was doing, the spent $1.25m on prelaunch advertising with prepaid attorney gigs. so launch day, the had nearly $4m laid out, and you know what happened, load balancer failed (primay) which instantiated failover to seconday. MTU was in excess of the capacity of the load balancer, so it burned every port on there, trying to manage the load. The site went down, many of the high profile financial backers pulled financing.

This all happened before cloud hosting was even a term. so the moral of this story is that the entity is only as strong as the weakest link.

so where you are talking about mere thousands, or tens of thousands, what i have witnessed and realized, that if you have not bench marked your infrastructure, if you have not stress tested it and know its full capacity and capability, then setting yourself out as ready is only a farce. hard reality on what is real and what is fantasy. but i thought i would lay it out there for you to read. 

I have yet to see, what I would call a successful Dolphin based site.... not a single one.  Zero.... zippo,,,, nada.

10 years ago you could build a site, and within a month start getting flooded with organic SE traffic, those days are LONG gone.

Building a site is the EASY part, marketing it is the hard part.

 The best things and for quality, time it's needed, i think we have to be patient, this Dolphin is already so good, surely not perfect, but it's developing in exactly the right direction to become the next big "trend" around (imo), when you look around in it's specific market, you will already find it at the top, but i expect to come out with a "bang!"

The "key" is to be able to provide what the other "players" are lets say "restricting", surely there is more than a way to get revenue after, from a FREE product, and all efforts been made will get the compensation which rightly deserves, it has lots of potential!

Yes dosdawg we all know,, if it is not on terabyte hosting then the host sux,,  I been meaning to ask you what is the biggest dolphin site you host there by the way?

People here always try to knock hfw but it is funny that 2 of the biggest most active site that post in these forums (thegettogether.net and ustillup.com)  are both hosted at hfw and both do just fine.

I said I had a business cloud cause that is what it is sold as, and it does wonderful. It was the traffic spiking at 5 times a normals days hits in the time span of a hour that I was unprepared for.

only an idiot here would spend anything close to "millions" on a freaking pipe dream that their dolphin site might take off,  I say pay for what you need and, get a little more then that.. then allow your server to grow as needed

I was simply pointing out to the guy what 10 thousand real hits would do to someone who is use to maxing out on a couple thousand a day.

oh and one more last thing, 500 joining at once prolly would not had brought my server down like it did but it was right at uk game time and peek chatting time here in the states, so I had 30 or so in video chat on tgt and had 90 in my lobby chat at rangerschat.com and 500 trying to join, and god only knows how many just hitting the index page for the show at the same time.

Why??? I would if i could! life it's not all about ourselfs and money-money-money......

More realistic to say, that (unfortunately) MOST of the people wouldn't help you in that, and also not just in that, but like a old savvy man once said (Gandholphin?) : "You must to be the change you want to see in the world" .

I have been helping/communicating with our newest site member/dreamer.

Giannis, some members are not as wise as "some" and tearing new members another asshole is what they do so well here.

I would like to welcome you here, I realize your 14 years old, this is not how all grown people act, especially me.

What they might want to tell you is, there site is bigger, my site is this my site is that.

That comes natural with most egotistical megalomaniacs.

We don't beat down here most times, usually it is encouragement and suggestions.

I wouldn't expect to find the biggest or most successful Dolphin sites listed here. Rather, you might actually find it pretty difficult to identify such sites as even running Dolphin. 

While Das's point was somewhat harsh, I feel as though most of you have still missed it. The key to running a successful site, no matter the platform, is to differentiate yourself from the competition. Why would anyone with the right business mind share those differentiation tactics here, openly?

I think it's perfectly acceptable to come here and ask for suggestions on new revenue streams or how to enhance profitability - but if you're asking what to do from square one & how make your presence in a niche, I'm afraid you have much research to be doing before even thinking about installing a platform. 

 I will try to concentrate on these words, next time i will have to catch a train.

While that's a valid case, I would still argue that the successful sites have been modified to the extent that such search string will not work. 

I'm saying they've been torn down, probably to just the profile ability, and rebuilt over the top of that. You'll find some successful 'lightly modified' Dolphin sites, but they are few and far between, and sometimes focused on dolphin itself :)

Any one making a significant profit or presence on the internet has it in their best interest to completely mask what their underlying infrastructure is.. and they most certainly are not going to openly advertise it here.

I can give you a tip not covered here.  I have a site which has one member, me, 7.0.9 its never had members, and as google changed its algorithm recently seems what I was doing google was pleased with. For all links I add 'title' attribute and for all images I add "alt' and 'title' attributes that is all I have done to this site beside adding content 'pages' which could be articles if used that way that I wrote not copied from somewhere else. After 1 month I had Google PR of 2.

I will be happy to share with you or others what makes a successful site. The web is a big place and there are enough people to share for us all for members.

 As for hosting the best by far is myhosting.com which is cloud hosting and I have VPS. They give support 24/7 and there prices cannot be beat. I have had other hosts who did nothing but cause me head aches and/or no support.  They have many packages and you can email them and they will help you every step of the way and never make you feel like an idiot regardless of your gender or age.

 well a few little known facts, google does a page rank check in august every year, they are other months to, the do them like quarterly i think.. dolphin out of the box with a fresh install of any kind will get you atleast a 2.. all of my sites has atleast a 2 even ones i just installed 7.09 on and never done anything else.. you must summit them to google of course but that is all, and once page rank time comes you will get a boost to a 2 atleast... 

 far as servers, i have a cloud and a have a ded a vps ,, i dont just run all my sites on one "cloud" you can ask pranshank i have multi servers setup to run my sites, the whole "cloud" argument was just someone talking  out of order about what they "think" i have,, i did say i had a "business cloud" cause that is what it is sold as by hfw, and it is wonderful and i love it, most of the time it idles at less then 2 percent so im happy,, it serves indexes for 5 sites total.. the whole "careful for what you wish for" comment i made was telling the guy who might only have a vps and see it idle fine with 30 to 100 people to be warned that 10 thousand will hit any server not ready for it hard and people joining in masses is something you really have to be prepared for if that traffic he was thinking about buying is "real"

The pagerank I got was not in August it was in June and I have not got any page rank of other dolphin sites that don't have extra content. So I was interested to see that I was acknowledged by google.

sometimes "pagerank" checkers take a while to update, willing to bet if you saw yours go up in june it was the one they did in may,, that is when my aquachat.net went up.. google works in funny ways, by me saying "out of the box" you will rank a 2" .. well you have to take in mind that google also goes with things like the url name itself.. my post was not to say you was not right but to confirm what you said in fact.. my nflupdates.net has yet to be touched really, i mean i did a few things here in there but havent worked on it really and it went to a 2 in august

Make sure you keep your site unique, this has worked well for my site with the webcams, especially since we have another tropical storm headed to Florida, my site is second on http://floridabeachlive.com/ because of the hits, personally informed by that site owner that my link is the most popular, people love to park on my site and watch, weather, beaches and stuff, wow how interesting right?

My site is listed on just about every "cam" site that is popular. Have been for years.

According to stats and views, my site visitors spend lots of time on site; this looks good in the eyes of Google Analytics, most just watch the cams, some play the games, maybe two memberships a day and that only started after I set the PAC to lock down most of the site, 30 a month on average.

Since your site is gaming geared, you need to start more arcade pages. There are several topics here on the forums on how to integrate several more free sites with the ability to make profits.

Remove the unnecessary and confusing modules your not going to use, this helps tremendously by keeping surfer confusion at a minimum. 

 i sincerely do not think the gist of the precept here was to state that any single hosting entity was the problem. were you sold something that was in fact not what you thought it was, perhaps, wwhat i stated here was no reliant on any host, it was based on preparation, planning,, and execution. im glad your sites are fine.

this should be a good one. so yes, you were sold a business cloud account, what i stated to you, is that it was not cloud at all, in the sense of the adapted word, the purpose of hosting in the cloud is that you are able to spin up instances to carry the load, there are even automation scripts for this. 

 sorry you took this offensively, the fact of the matter is that you iterate just what was stated by me, you say you were not prepared, and not many are, because there are some gaping wholes when considering dolphin and bench marks to where you could be certain as to what is needed based on not just a membership base, but the actual usage, and what media is being used. 

rackspace and AWS would be the two "cloud" hosting providers, i would like to see what your actual infrastructure consists of, and not just deemed or adapted the feel good term "cloud". 

in relaying my story about blastoffnetwork it was to allow those who are uknowing, and willing to learn, that you cannot first off, host dolphin on any hosting service provider, secondly, if you do invest in your site or have investors, then you need to be "prepared"
