What a great idea for a Dolphin module this would be. You upload a gpx file from your gps device or fitness monitor, and display all kinds of cool stuff.... the actual route on a Google map... speed vs time..... elevation vs. time.... heart rate vs time..... stride length vs time..... stride length vs elevation.... total number of steps you took in the marathon race..... the list goes on.
Apparently the tricky part is calculating distance using what may be thousands of latitude, longitude and elevation points. Most of the other stuff is just doing math on data extracted from a gpx file (xml format).
Who's up for this?

Here's some code that displays a gpx track on a google map. It works.

Module developers spend way too much energy cranking out modules that do little to help Dolphin sites offer their members something of real value. The first thing I do when I visit boonex.com, is check the market to see what sort of new and creative things have become available since my last visit. I've been pretty disappointed for some time now. If I needed a "sexy template" for my Dolphin porn site, I'd be the luckiest person on earth, because the market is flooded with them. You got some new 7.1 templates for $40 + that are nothing more than a few color changes of the top menu. There must be 50 different variations of the boonex 'Groups' module, that are not much more than a renaming to some entity or thing, ie, hotels motels dogs pets clubs bands churches schools ..... bla bla bla.... who gives a shit. In my opinion, there's a creativity shortage around here.
GPX files convey a lot of data, depending on the device that generated the file. In addition to a route on a Google map, which is the easy part, you have other things like, elevation, time, speed (calculated), heart rate, stride, bike power, and more. A Dolphin module that could parse a wide variety of gpx file data, and create maps and graphical plots, would have some far reaching implications for niche dolphin sites. Any site with a focus on sports, fitness, and outdoors would surely have a good use for a robust gpx module.

I have to agree with houston.....
developers need to think of modules that will add real value to dolphin sites. And his idea is a good example of this.
Any module that I have that adds anything that other sites do not have I have had to pay big bucks to have developed privately. I have also been able to supply ideas to the few developers out there that are willing to listen, and some of these have made it to market...
My next site has some awsome functionality that is totaly unique, but i will need to pay through the nose to have it developed. It is a shame there are not more ground breaking modules out there in the market....

What would be a ground breaking module in your thought?

so much to do.... |
I'm using that module... probably the only one crazy enough to invest in it (I did see some potential) and then hired the guy to extend it into something useful. In my opinion, the module is neither coded very well nor supported for bugs. Contracting him turned into a mess I won't repeat. I eventually had to pay another developer to fix it. There's a link to my recently launched Dolphin 7.0.9 site in my profile if you want to check it out... look under the News - Media menu tab.

You saw my brief????
Whoever developes it (if the price is right) will be allowed to sell a version in the market that does not feature the charity related features (I need this functionality to be private), but all the other features can be included in a module.
I have 2 developers interested, but i am currently waiting for more stability with 7.1 before i begin...

I also like what you have done Prashank. Your code so far has beeg great and helpfull to many on here. I will always be happy to pass ideas on to you if you are looking for them : )

Houston has a good idea and DRautenbach always seems to have lots of them.
A section in market could be for websiteowners go out and request a module and share cost after agreeing on features.
If there was a point module integrated in Dolphin from start.
Then other developers could develop unique individual modules and hook into that one.
Today I think its AntonLV and Modzzz that corner that market.
Now sleep.
7.1 My favorite number |
Without question would be to use the categories table to run an outline like page that if a category is searched it produces all the possible aspects of Dolphin by simply clicking on the category field. So if I am looking at a photo that has a category or tag that lets say is Hurricane Sandy and I click on either one the page produced would be an outline page with everything that has that category on the site... A summary page that is driven by cats and tags...
What would be a ground breaking module in your thought?
It is a shame there are not more ground breaking modules out there in the market....

I must say I totally agree with Houston. I cannot believe that developers have no creativity. The reason being? They just worry about their pockets (I must say not all are like this, but majority are).
If I were a developer I would listen, make fewer but solid and in depth modules, ones that would be a site by themselves. If you know what i mean.
Most of the mods I see just touch the surface of a potentially great idea, but never fulfilled cause the creator is out making more and never developing the good one he has. The modules follow - "Jack of all trades, master of none"
There are some mods here that have great potential, but are not detailed enough, they need more functionality and features, which will kick them to the next level, not only that it will make our sites stand out and attract more members. Instead most site owners are out there searching for reliable developers that will work with them to give what their sites need.
Come on developers care about your customers - us. If we die, so do you.

that's not a problem with mod code. that's a problem with googles programming lol. it clearly shows where the routine code is located and called from and what is being sent to it. and actually most of google maps are incorrect for the most part. so why bother. I hate it when they smudge subsadized houseing as military targets and then put mobile home where i know cities are. and hide all the rich houses etc etc etc.. i probably won't help them. |
houstin is right.. it's a good way to look after kids going for hikes in the mountains etc.. unfortunately i see too many possibilities for abuse for that tracker right now. revolver maps does once in a while reveal an undisclosed isp location. as for hardware. i have done a simple search for fitness gps. not even close on the public market. cell phone and gps technogoly has and always will be based on old transmitter and reciever technologies or so it seems. introduction to wireless and satalites proves it can work giving a little tweeking. but all you want is someone to use the full potential of google. a long time ago i was told they are accurate within 4 meters. i'm sure it has evolved way past that by now. does google expose they command set list? that's good for starters. for a mod with what you have already. I checked for my old IEEE institute of electronic and electrical engineers website and it's totally vanished. they probably just moved it to keep it safer. it is suppose to list everything the techs need for chips and data formats. then there is the patent holders to deal with. they own those exclusive rights to those things. makes it so much more easier then hacking them out manually. if you want a manual do it yourself hack. get a ham radio (don't transmit as they make you go through years of bullshit inorder to do so, including morse code) hook it up to a small circuit board and make use of the old ADC analog to digital chips. and get the data into your main computer for processing those GSP systems for device registration codes so you know who is who. I'm sure it's probably in those xml files already. but i still say its unsafe if someone is looking to kill you (or worse). for your problem with math. its really quite simple.. study only four concepts... barometers for altitudes and x and x grids to map the terrain. its a basic x/y/z formula that most pilots and space crafts use. use those are reference for your formulas. simple enough.. now for your problem... use a 3d array to grid (or you can try like video game polygons within that 3d array.. matrices. what you want is one point of reference and then monitor all singnals comming in from a multiple random array disection program. can't be all that hard becuase you actually have trigonometic in the satalites to work with.. just choose you base carefully. or make more of them to open new areas. remember modulation is a very handy tool for locating signals. old CB users can track a tower within 100 years just by the way the old analog meter on them sway. dead center and you are there. all in all you have to select your cpu. then aquire the assembler and debugger board and choose your method of storeing the program you make onto the prom (or whatever) burn it in. windows is a great tool for that. it has exe2bin and bin2exe which convert code to binary chip dump files and vise versa. is this getting a little to complex for you? or do i have to tell you how to use photography methods to make chip blue prints and composite bonds inorder to make circuits by etc/acid/wash techniques. lol. like i said. i am very very bord of this technology. i moved onto biolology. but if you do need some ideas. i usually am pretty close. and i am terrible at spelling lol. cheerz. thanks for the developer status. i like this section best. I can talk freely. on my site they mostly talk about product they want etc etc etc i threw in some cloned stem cell research that you will find in the mnemonicrom group. you might find it more interesting than simple tracking devices. http://roaring.biz |

lol. i did on my domain. lol. I only come here when there are bugs in boonex code. but i will give you something to think about.. you really don't know what that box is hooked up to yet do you? lol. there are still bugs in 7.1 and you only have 4 options for default code.(it's actually a nice function/method/routine whatever) lol. it's xml eh. that's one hell of a long command line statement (dos). double check the xml but i still say it's googles fault. let's see it craps out about somewhere between 100 and 180 users. it draws quite fast (as most video games do) and my map always has the same errors with the same users. (corrected by moving the map around a bit or zoom in). if you can't figure out that easy routine then there is something wrong with you. i imagine there is a high bandwidth problem on those maps but why the same errors all the time. lol. buffers. |

@HL - I agree with you as well, and I am currently working on an EMR/EHR module. Although I have not seen many medical or psychiatric related sites, I am hoping someone will want it. caredesign.net |
Ok.... so I now have a real world requirement for this tracking module now. I could buy something off the shelf, but it wont be in dolphin so I will have very little if any control over any customisations that I will require. I need to be able to track on a map the current locations of several vehicles (fitted with gps transmitters) simultaniously.#
Anyone working on it yet?

RE:

That is well beyond the scope of what I was suggesting in the first post of this topic. I just wanted something to plot gpx data, which is a record of where you have been, along with other synchronized data from other sensors. This would just require uploading a file to a Dolphin site and plotting gps data on a google map, and graphing data from sensors.
What you are asking, would require establishing a real time communication link between a gps transceiver and your Dolphin site. No one around here wants to take on something even moderately technical, and that sort of thing would probably smoke their brains. It'll be next to impossible to even get someone to work on the plotting of static data.
