Free marquee and eye grabbing tip

Want to add some simple code to your site that will allow you to grab attention to a scroll bar with any message you want to use, and add a couple eye grabbing graphics too?

Your going to edit your _sub_header.html file located in your /templates/base/ please make backups...

if you have a custom template you would add to /templates/tmpl_yours/base/_sub_header.html

In your root, you will need to create a folder called "images" and upload the gifs that I have attached at the end of this post. There are two images I used, you can use them or something else you might have.

in the _sub_header.html add this code to the end of the file. Adjust this code to suit your site.

Save the file and clear your cache. You can edit the scroll time and wording for your site, or not use it at all..

i been doing this since i opened my site,, but i do it a far easier way.. i just add

<FONT SIZE="6" FACE="courier" COLOR=yellow><marquee bgcolor=maroon behavior="scroll" direction="left" scrollamount="12">YOUR TEXT HERE</marquee>

to my banners and you can adjust the color and text size and speed,, it is basic html and you can mod it was you wish and when you but it in your "banners" it shows on all pages,, it is how i get messages to all my members when i have news or i change or add something

Almost as annoying as blinking text.

That's cool too, I use my top banner for the adsense code only and want it above the menu line; another site uses a template that does not display a top banner at all, only the left, right and bottom.

I'm sharing with others that are new here, or just want to try something different to enhance a site feature, I used to use animated graphics back in the 90's but not recently. I have already had more "likes" to page now that I have implemented this on the sites I have.

dt_max_red really does not need somethings like this, it's flashy as is

 so are you but I deal with it.. 

 Unfortunately, the way most internet users deal with pages with marquee text or blinking text, is to promptly hit the browser 'back' button.

He has a valid point.  <marquee> is almost as bad as <blink>.  There's a reason it's seldom used (hell, I haven't seen it since IE6 came onto the scene, and all the sites were on Geocities).

At least change the background color or something to make it match the rest of the site.  Browser defaults for it are the worst.

I guess I'll just keep quiet as usual..

first off, i never use it all the time, if any of the negative posters here can tell we another way to get site wide alerts out to people then i would love the advice but there are times when its use comes in pretty handy,, such as,,, just this last week i updated my chatroom, but doing the update cause alot of people to not get the new room and land in the old one.. i had to get word out they needed to clear the cache so i put up the marquee and it works fine as people came in and said "hey wasnt getting in but seen the marquee and fixed it"

and then sometimes i put it up if i make or add new features to the site,, it is a good eye grabber

and i think once i had to put it up cause one of my chatters was found to have herpes and be the "sharing" kind of sport

i honestly see nothing wrong with having one up now and then as a news feed .. no different the the ticker box on facebook.. but i dont leave it up all the time either

Yes, I'm a horrible person for having an opinion about non-standard HTML elements.  I view <blink> and <marqee> as distractions, and don't advocate for their use, but I never said other people can't use them.  Go ahead!  Have fun!  Blink and scroll that text!  Go wild!  Just remember to change the background color from that hideous blue.

 already did change the color; gets my site news out better than any other way on the site.

So far my rankings for google have remained the same.

For me, <marquee> reduces happiness to about 75.  You're on the line, but no worries.  <blink> on the other hand...  Expect riots in all cities.*  It's not something I would backpedal over, but can be a nuisance.  Don't abuse it like a bad GeoCities page ("there were good ones?").

Oh, and I recommend JavaScript for the sake of standards.  Last I checked, <marquee> isn't a standard and support from browsers can be dropped (and should... non-standard elements piss me off).

Can't comment on SEO.  Let me do a search...  *Click*...  OH GOD THE BLUE BAR THING.  Surprising lack of video camera-wielding women, too.

It's the perfect addition to the GeoCities site in the making.  I hope that Under Construction GIF is there in the mean time, as users need to know the site isn't complete.

Let's recap today's subject, site content has nothing to do with making money.

Grabbing the attention of the surfer is key, making them see what is important.

I will admit, my site duvallocals.info only has 17k members, it's a test site to begin with.

It scores high on google for  what I'm aiming for; I've said b4, I care nothing for memberships.

You search.... you hit my site, boring as it is(which is my goal), but then oh wait you see a google ad that looks a bit more interesting along the lines of what your used to searching for, and the ads are tailored to search specifics as google looks at your past searches.

In the end, instead of hitting the "back" button, I have proof of them clicking on my teasing ads..

I'm not the biggest dolphin site, but I sure do good on my ads.. 

One question:  How's that Korean text in your homepage title working out for you?

 The first website I ever created had the site name at the top in those same flaming letters LOL. I used to make a decent amount of Adsense money off that site, I think it was the same theory Newton mentioned.. people would arrive at my site and think "what is this crap??" then they would click one of my ads :-)

 Yep... the flames have gone out on most of the sites around the internet, the text has stopped blinking, and text has stopped scrolling.(until now, that is)  I actually have a flaming logo for a site I have on the back burner, flamethefans.com..... a site to be dedicated to the stupid behavior of all the fans at all kinds of sporting events.   No animation.... just text on fire.   Not sure I'll ever get around to actually developing the site.

just so we are clear, i use the marquee and i find it serves a purpose so im not knocking it to me it serves as a site wide news feed when i need one but i dont go overboard with it and yes i have been asked before in other forums "why am i seeing a marquee in 2012?"  of course what was before i toned down the text and matched the colors it was bad and i will admit that but it was when the site was new and i needed "Attention"
