I'm a fairly experienced boonex user, having used dolphin/ray on a couple sites over the last few years. This is my first time attempting to use 6.1.4 however and I've hit an error I can't figure out.
I went into the Ray Admin and setup all the FREE Licenses, no problems. But when I went into base settings to enable RMS, it says it can't connect to the RMS Server.
The settings are as follows:
RMS Address: rms.boonex.com
RMS Port: 10000
RMS HTTP Port: 10080
Have the ports changed or something?
Any help ya'll can provide would be much appreciated!

Good Luck getting an answer to this!!!!
If you leave the use RMS box unchecked and the other values at their defaults, you will be able to use things like the Instant Message widget.
If you scan the forums, you will see messages that state the new Ray Media Server requires binding to new ports. If you actually install the Ray Media Server (3.5.1) you will see that PORT 10000 and PORT 10080 are not used but instead the PORTS listed in the installation wiki (1935 and 5080) are used. Unless someone with definitive information will respond, you are left making your own conclusion.
Although I installed my own RMS (3.5.1) server, checked the use RMS check box, chose domain, chose PORTS 1935 and 5080, and did not get the unable to connect to RMS server error message, when I sniffed the network traffic when trying to use the video profile widget it was connecting to rms.boonex.com and not my RMS server. The connection is never made, and one is left with a widget that infinitely will display the connecting message.
IMO, the base settings dialog is completely flaky and unreliable. I have had times when I put values in the fieldsm, yet old values are put back in when I go back into the settings. I have settings in there now and do not get errors, but it does not look like the ray widgets are using the values from the dialog box.
I have been unsuccessful in getting anyone to verify that you can use your own RMS server with the FREE version of dolphin or that the video profile widget will work with the FREE Ray Media Server (rms.boonex.com).
RAYZ also publishes something called wowza (FREE) @ expertzzz that is supposed to act similar to RMS, but I have not been able to get confirmation that it will work with 6.1.4. The installation of wowza completes without error, but it does not appear to work.
I have seen more then a dozen dolphin sites where the video is not working. I have to believe this is a very unpolished part of this software.
If you get everything working with the FREE version I would like to know the solution. It appears like everything but the video recording works fine with the FREE version of RMS, but that defeats the purpose when trying to evaluate different platforms. |
*sigh* when is Boonex ever going to release a piece of software that is NOT full of bugs?
I tried changing the ports but still can't connect. All the widgets work except for Chat which is the main one I need, naturally.
This crap is exactly why I stopped using Dolphin/Ray & moved on to other solutions...guess I'll have to do it again.
Thanks for the info.

Nope they havent change the setting, but do you mean you are denied access of the ray chat? or having problem with RMS server connection? if its the latter ,well in my case cyberxing fixed that for me. it means you have to pay for a working RMS server Port number |
Sammie, are any of your FREE dolphin sites that are using your own RMS server public? If so could you post a URL, I would like to check it out.
This is the first time I have heard anyone stating that they are using FREE dolphin and have it it working with their own RMS server. I am still skeptical because when I sniffed the traffic, there was not even an attempt to connect to my RMS server, but only the rms.boonex.com server (although my base settings are clearly set up to use my RMS server).
I do have ports 1935 and 5080 open and I do not see any "rejected" packets being logged in my firewall. Then again, the video widget does not even attempt to connect to my server.
When trying to setup up Dolphin on a shared hosted environment to connect to my RMS server on my local server, I can not even get it to not display the 'unable to connect to RMS server' message. It is not because of firewall settings (I do no have any rejected packets in the logs). I thought it might be an issue with access.dat, but as I have no idea if there are RMS error logs it is hard to say. My access.dat file contains the valid domain, but it still does not work. I can't remember if that configuration even attempts a connection to my server or not (I have slept since I last tested).
RMS server installed in the same path as JRE? Hmmm, this is not a requirement from the Wiki and it is the first I have read anyone mentioning this. I definitely am not doing this but the ray.sh script runs fine and all the messages that are listed in the wiki installation are displayed correctly. Are you sure this is a requirement? Is it that most people possibly do not have a properly configured JAVA_PATH environment variable, so by putting the RMS server in the same directory as JRE it just works. If it is true that it is a requirement, then that should be listed in the Wiki installation documentation. Ultimately, if this is true, it should be reprogrammed because that is just bad programming.
In my case I am only running one version of the RMS server. Version 6.1.4 is the only version of FREE Dolphin I have installed and version 3.5.1 of the Ray Media server is the only version I have installed.
Sammie, can you list what you have in access.dat, what you have in your red5-web.properties files (specifically the values for webapp.virtualHosts), and a snapshot of your base settings (at least an example with bogus IPs as you might not want to give out this information; although if you trust your access.dat you should be able to block those who are unwanted).
Excuse me for being skeptical, but Rayz server is the only server where I have seen all of this stuff working correctly and I was not sure if that site was using the wowza plugin. The instant messaging stuff totally works fine with the FREE dolphin configuration, but I have yet to see the video stuff work correctly. Plus my packet captures would state that the video widget is not attempting to make a connection to an RMS server different then rms.boonex.com.
Thanks.

Well F*me!!!
I joined http://www.girlscare.org (as I am only using 6.1.4) and it does appear to work. So I may be eating crow.
No, I was not including port numbers, so I will definitely give that a try. I of course will use your same port numbers just to be spiteful!
What is the output of 'sudo lsof -i | grep java' on your server? Where are you setting the 10080 in the config files?
Thanks.

Sammie, thanks for the info!!!
What you posted was plenty.
I will take a look tonight at my configs and see if what you have posted works for me....
If it does, then I will eat some serious crow and a huge bite of humble pie.
More importantly, I hope this thread will help others!!!!!

just a tidbit of info on here. so that some things are clarified with sammie's input.
the requirements are as best i know, and i have sucessfully run two versions of RMS while running two versions of dolphin., and from my install experience, the only problem i was having was not knowing that you needed two differnent versions of jre. so since this is not your case, then i think the only mistake you have made on there is not including the binding port after the IP address.
i did not find it to be necessary to have jre installed in the same folder with rms, but was necessary to have two different versions of jre. now you asked about if in fact that some had bad JAVA_Home variables declared, that is a possibility, and in a larger number of cases where HFW (dedicated) users were trying to install RMS, there was no available java at all, however this could be achieved for an additional $50.00.
little story about that, and i have evidence of it, so i am not spreading rumors, i installed RMS twice on a dedicated server for a fella who was on HFW, and twice the entire install would be wiped out in a day or two. now i dont know who was chunking the install, but i do know they were jumping ready to charge $50.00 to get it reinstalled.
then i showed them a set of screenshots where the install was sucessful, and they said they could not explain how it got deleted. go figger that one.
if you require assistance with your rms install, i would be more than happy to take a look at your settings, and help get you setup and running.
had to come back and edit this:
what you see in relation to the rms.boonex.com is the ads running communications with that server, since you are running the free version, that is consistent with having the free version of ray installed.
just a quick little question< how is it you dont know any of this stuff, but you have yourself declared as a boonex system administrator?

That is just chicken scratch in a text field. I am by no means a proclaimed administrator. I am just researching social networking platforms as part of a business case. I probably have about 20 hours of so of time logged with Dolphin so that hardly makes me qualified to be an administrator.
Thanks for the offer to help. I am going to continue to study this stuff and see if I can get it working.

How accurate is http://www.boonex.com/trac/ray/wiki/RayServerInstall documentation?
I assume the ";" at the end of RAY_SERVER_PATH= when editing run_daemon.sh is incorrect.
Obviously the documentation does not mention specifying port numbers when modifying the webapp.virtualHosts parameter in each of the widget's red5-web.properties configuration files.
Are there more errors?
I notice Sammie's output from the red5.properties configuration files have quite a few changes from the default config files. I could not tell if that was for show, or if highlighted items actually needed to be changed. I am not talking about the use of different port numbers other then 1935 and 5080, but the other changes where Sammie's ports are different, but in the default config files they are the same. If one is going to use the default ports, which on my system I will list below, do the red5.properties files need to be modified?
java 8843 root 75u IPv4 202705 TCP *:9999 (LISTEN) java 8843 root 78u IPv4 202707 TCP *:34379 (LISTEN) java 8843 root 89u IPv4 202719 TCP *:1935 (LISTEN) java 8843 root 96u IPv4 202722 TCP *:8088 (LISTEN) java 8843 root 110u IPv4 202737 TCP *:5080 (LISTEN)
It looks like these ports are binding to ALL interfaces.
Can the webapp.virtualHosts parameter look like the following in each of the widgets red5-web.properties config file if one would like to listen on multiple interfaces?
webapp.virtualHosts=209.209.209.209:1935,172.16.55.55:1935
The short answer is that I have not gotten this to work in a LAN environment, or from a remote (internet) environment.
I do get the whole range of stdout messages when running ray.sh. I do no see any blatant errors that stand out.

If access.dat is left blank does that allow access from all domains, or does it reject access from all domains?

Now I am at least seeing "attempts" being made to connect to RMS server (everything on port 1935).
It looks like remote machine makes a request to RMS server (admin.swf object). Then connection is attempted to rtmp://servername.domain.com:1935/global/ (and possibly checks for audio/video codecs).
In that same packet another URL: http://servername.domain.com/ray/index.php?module=global&app=admin&nick=admin&password=<33 bytes of data>
After that packet is sent, it kind of looks like the correct response is not returned and the connection is terminated. There really is not anything human readable after that.
If I were to guess, it does not look like the RMS server is returning the correct information to the remote client.
So firewall rules are definitely OK, and there is a process binding to the port (1935), but RMS process is obviously not doing what it needs to be doing. I most likely have an error in the RMS server config, but there is nothing obvious in the network capture, and I have yet to see any RMS application debugging logs, so I am not certain where the problem exists.
Help would definitely be appreciated.

bro, i didnt say there was no such thing as RMS services, i said there is no such thing as buying a port number. of course and absolutely there is rms services, there would be no reason for me to say that it doesnt exist, and i never said that, i said how did you buy a port number?
now if you sold him a port number, good for you, but i couldnt imagine you doing so.
that there is NO SUCH things as RMS services ???
working RMS server PORT
comparison contrast here cyberxing, i never said there was no such thing as RMS Services, i said there is no such thing as selling a working RMS server PORT, as if he bought a port into he RMS.
but really find it ridiculous even explaining this, as its clear that what you derived from my post and the intent of my post actually became a collusion, and just a huge discombobulation. sorry for the confusion.

unfortunately the documentation has not been updated in a while. there have been some updates, but then again its a wiki, so i think anybody can add to it at any time eh?
i followed the install directions, and used common sense. i think if you apply sammies instance of direction, you should be able to complete your installation.
are you running the red5.properties test on your installation?
what are you getting reported back to you when you run ./ray.sh?
3.5.1 as best i recall from converations with different people, should be installed on the higher ports, and not 1935 and 5080, these ports were specific to RMS 3.1. maybe it can run on those ports, but the install instructions "not the wiki" that i got with RMS 3.5.1 is what i used in conjunction with the wiki, and with what i had learned from the install of RMS 3.1.
as far as pointers, without seeing what you have done already and viewing each of your settings, then i couldnt tell you anything further.
hope all is working out for you though.

Ok, thanks.
I was just trying to get an idea of where to start.
I want to streamline the install, and want to know what is fact and what is fiction.
For anyone following this thread....<FACT>If you are using RMS 3.5.1 and are using the WIKI install documentation, it does not work even if you follow the instructions to a "T" </FACT>
are you running the red5.properties test on your installation?
the packet capture from the red5 test, and from configuring the base settings are almost identical (both fail).
I will continue to tinker...
Not sure why any port greater then 1024 would be any different then any other port (assuming they are available), but I will continue to play with the settings.
Since CyberXing sells good ports, maybe I will just end up buying one of those.
Once I get it sorted out and have collected all my data, I will be sure to post my installation instructions.
Thanks.

for kicks and grins I followed sammie's docs to the "Tee" and it still doesn't work. Although there might be some rhyme and reason as not to use port 5080 if you are using VNC, it still does not work. Plus in Sammie's example she is using ports that already have IANA assignments, which in most cases, should be avoided. For examle if you are running the Amanda Backup server software that is assigned to ports 10080-10083.
Is http://www.girlscare.org/ running the stock 6.1.4? From the page source information it does not appear to be the same version I am running.
Can you at least send the output of 'sudo lsof -i | grep java | grep 2637' ;changing 2637 to the pid of the RMS server? By default I only see 5 listening threads which share the same pid. By playing with the ports I was actually able to get more threads started, but I was not sure if that was a good thing.
Is there any output if you run 'ps -ax | grep ray' other then the pid from the grep command?
If I basically follow the Wiki docs, and then make a connection to 'http://my.site:5080/' I get the Red5 website and I can run the test app and am able to see video just fine from my video source.
Unfortunately I can not configure the base settings so that it will connect to the RMS server. I have tried it locally, on a LAN in an un-routed network, and using a Dolphin installation on a shared hosts. In all cases the results are the same.
Thanks.

just checking in to see if you ever figured out your RMS? i just installed it on another server, and its running like a brand new Escalade. i think you should try to use ports 10000 and 10080 that was in the install manual of the RMS 3.5.1 when it was released. if those are assigned ports, but not being used, then i suppose ray shouldnt have told us to use them. my port setup varies from sammies, just because thats what i want to do. further more, there are many ports that are standard for certain applications, but that does not mean you have to run an application on those ports. i dont run shell on 22, actually i change the port every other week or so, dont ask me, just because its something to do.
lemme look at your settings, give me a screenshot of each of the files that you configured, and i think i can spot the malfunction.

When using Sammie's instructions (verbatim) I end up with a single process that runs:
root 28810 5353 22 09:58 pts/0 00:00:08 /usr/bin/java -Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy=conf/red5.policy -cp red5.jar:conf: org.red5.server.Standalone
From that single process there are five "listeners":
java 28810 root 75u IPv4 725187 TCP *:9999 (LISTEN) java 28810 root 78u IPv4 725189 TCP *:39998 (LISTEN) java 28810 root 89u IPv4 725201 TCP *:10046 (LISTEN) java 28810 root 96u IPv4 725204 TCP *:10089 (LISTEN) java 28810 root 110u IPv4 725221 TCP *:amanda (LISTEN)
I don't actually see a "RAY" process.
I can totally grant you sudo/SSH access if that would help. Or if you are willing to offer help as you have suggested with allowing me to log into my server from you network that too would be more then acceptable (and helpful).
I have not tried installing an RMS server in a VM environment on a different server configuration to see if there is something specific that makes is not work on my desired platform. That was going to be one of my next steps.
I totally do not doubt that it works. I just now it has not worked for me, and I have seen several threads where people are having the same issues so I do not feel totally alone.
Let me know how you would like to proceed. Again, your time, patience, and help is appreciated. I am on your watch, so what is convenient for you is OK for me.
Thank You!

This conversation is over my head, but could you clarify that the following is correct. My site now has enough users so that I very occcassionally see simulaneous users. I have the RMS box unchecked, so the chat box just spins, but I don't recall seeing the Instant Message widget on my actions list. Should it be there"

Yes, this thread is getting long winded, and yes, it is my fault, so I apologize for that.
For me, If you install the base Free dolphin 6.1.4, and all of the free Ray plugins (outside of the scope of this thread), you can use the free RMS server at rms.boonex.com with the limitation being that you will not have "video" functionality.
In the base settings of the Ray plugins, if you type in a name you want to use for the first field, then type rms.boonex.com in the server field, and put 1935/5080 in the port fields, and leave the use RMS check box unchecked, you should end up with the above mentioned functionality.
I think the Ray code is hard coded to use the proper settings when the use RMS check box is unchecked. I believe you can put anything in those fields, and the AV chat works (text only), and so will the Shout Box. Again, the last statement could be total BS. I thought I had tested this, but I can not remember for sure. To be safe, if you use the preciously stated settings, you should end up with "basic" functionality of the A/V chat widget, and the Shoutbox.
Did that answer your question?

Sruckh - I never said you were long winded - exploring issues like this is what these forums are for. Your information helped me understand this, and my port settings were not correct. Thanks for your help.

Not my mistaken thinking I hope- I am just learning this.

I am testing this function tonight,I have loaded one user in IE and a different user in Chrome and the admin panel in Firefox. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether the RMS check box is checked or unchecked- when member 1 goes to member 2 a "chat now" link appears in the action menu, but it won't connect. I thought I was supposed to get an "instant message" link if the RMS box was unchecked, but it didn't appear. Does anyone know why? The instant message box is checked in the settings section.

Update: I also tried disabling Ray on the settings menu. This caused the "chat now" link to disappear, but no instant message link showed up.

I get can not connect or not installed on the wigets. When first set up it registered them all ok, then they began playing up. Can not get the RMS settings box up either to change settings.
Any help would be appreciated. What files could i re upload to get settings back. is this caused by boonex rms settings and is there a server i can sent this too and pay just for rms so everything works?
i am newbie and not really technical so be gentle
Can anyone help , please

Sammie, obviously I couldn't expect my users to do that - or even know that they should do that, so I guess the IM feature is broken on Dolphin. If you or anyone here discovers a fix, please let us know.

p.s. update - rereading that I realize you are giving me a test, not a fix. I will try that test - thanks.

I never really monitored the network to see if anything from base was actually making a connection when the "use RMS" checkbox is left unchecked, so Sammie probably has more accurate information. I just know that if you leave it unchecked you can have a limited A/V chat, working RMS feeds, and working shoutbox (albeit with limitations).
If you scan rms.boonex.com the only interesting ports that are open from the outside world (from the internet) are: 1935, 9999, and 10000. The 5080 port is not even open, so one would logically believe that using this port is not accurate.
I have tried every combination of these ports in the base setting dialog box with the server name of rms.boonex.com. It does not matter what combination of ports I use, I receive the infamous "Can't connect to RMS" error message.
Now assuming the RMS server running at rms.boonex.com has the same codebase as the free RMS server and has the same restriction that the access.dat file will contain the domain of every ray/dolphin web server that will be using the RMS server, then either there is something adding your domain to this file, or you will not be able to access this RMS server until your domain has been added to this file. As I have not even gotten the free RMS server to work, I can not give any validity to when the access.dat file is read. If it is a memory file and is only read on start-up then one would have to believe that there is not a process that adds your domain to the access.dat file. If access.dat is read everytime a connection is attempted then it would be possible to dynamically add domains to this file (possibly when the ray widgets are registered).
Plus I have no idea how the RMS sever validates one's domain name. If it is strictly a DNS lookup then this would fail in many configurations. For example, in my environment, if one was to do a reverse DNS lookup from my IP you would not receive the domain that is registered with the Ray widgets.
I have seen Sammie's site work so I know it is not impossilbe to have a working RMS server. Unfortunately, I have not gotten one to work in my environment and I have noted several things that do not work as one might expect. I have several network traffic captures that do not make any sense (at least to me).
I am collecting as much information as possilbe to hopefully give some explanation to why some people are successfull with RMS and why others like myself have not been as fortunate.

There used to be a rms version a while back I foget which one or how far back that didn't use the access.dat file. Which meant if you knew someone had rms setup, and figured out their ip and ports they were using you could connect to there rms. Then someone realized this could possibly happen and the access.dat file in newer releases came about.
I don't know if boonex or ray did this, or if it was red5. I never really followed red5 that much.
So either they have a version with no access.dat file...everyone is allowed to connect maybe. Who knows for sure though.
It is not impossible to have a script with automation add a domain to the access.dat file, and even restart rms. But this would be most likely be one heck of a long file by now.
Or maybe they have some totally unique modified version or some kind of combination.
There has to be a ton of people trying to connect to the free boonex rms at any given time. And if the thing is bogged down or messing up I could see some connection issues and not being able to connect.
Too bad there are so many problems with the free one, because many can't connect to it and assume that rms doesn't work. They get frustrated and give up or move on. But you do get what you pay for usually with something Free.
It is interesting that you mention... "If you scan rms.boonex.com the only interesting ports that are open from the outside world (from the internet) are: 1935, 9999, and 10000. The 5080 port is not even open, so one would logically believe that using this port is not accurate."
For those that do not have the server type to install there own rms, a 3rd party rms will almost always do away with all the headaches and issues.
Good luck on your quest though. If you ever find a sollution let us know.

You know what I just realized. I saw through the alerts box that a friend of mine had just logged in so I went to his profile to see if I could chat or send him an IM - but those features have not been implemented here. If Unity either can't get it to work how can they expect us to? Does anyone know why they don't have it on Unity? Maybe someone from Boonex should weigh in here to let us know what is going on. |

Interesting ports on server.4ppl.com (66.225.217.124): PORT STATE SERVICE 1935/tcp open rtmp 5080/tcp open unknown
From a scan both 1935 and 5080 are open.
You can now hit this site:
http://rms.boonex.com:5080/demos/
Where you can see the red5 server.
Although if I try and use rms.boonex.com with ports 1935 and 5080 in my base settings, I get the "Can't connect to RMS" server error. Which is in fact the exact symtoms I get if I run the free RMS server on my own server. I can connect to the red5 server and run the publishing demo, but when I try to use my locally installed free RMS server (from the base settings dialog in dolphin/ray), I will receive the "Can't connect to RMS" server error.
So trying to use my own server or the rms.boonex.com server produces exactly the same results.
|
One more lesson learned today...
Installing the SVN version of the RED5 server I am able to run the RED5 demo programs including the oflaDemo demo. Also with the SVN version of the RED5 server installed, I am able to configure base settings without receiving the "Can't connect to RMS" error message. I figured this was a good sign. I figured if the webapps that come with the RED5 server work, the ones that come with the free RMS server would work.
Unfortunately the following error is logged to the console:
[WARN] [DefaultQuartzScheduler_Worker-1] org.red5.server.net.rtmp.RTMPConnection - Closing RTMPMinaConnection from ip.of.local.machine : 11924 to ip.of.RMS.server (in: 3421 out 3215 ), with id 461791926 due to long handshake
So I am inching closer, but still have not cracked the puzzle. Hopefully each new clue will get me closer to a solution.

Through some miracle I have free dolphin 6.1.4 talking to free RMS server (using the standard ports configured by the RMS/Red5 server). I would not say I have it working, but this is much farther then the "can't connect to RMS".
One can at least publish video using the A/V chat webapp, and the video recorder from the video profile applet looks like it will record. Unfortunately a java exception is thrown along with a ffmpeg error. To the client, no error is given. They just end up with a black screen after the video has been recorded. The error messages mentioned above are are thrown to the server console.
I believe I am much closer to cracking the case. Once I get everything working, and can duplicate the setup, I will post my findings here.

hey i have to say u are very smart , i did what u said and it worked, now however i cant create a chat room any ideas on that, and oh yeah have i mentioned you are the bomb |
I might have also uncovered that the RMS server can not be in a DNAT'd environment. If it can, I could not make it work. I was trying to load up RMS on a different platform. The new RMS server is running on a Virtual Machine on a routed network. Although I could reach ports 1935,5080, and 8088 from the internet, dolphin and the ray base settings did not take.
Here are the basic steps used to make it work to the point mentioned above (very similar to wiki). Change to the directory where RMS has been extracted.
- Update the JAVA_HOME variable in ray.sh to the path where java is installed. If java binary is installed in /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_07/bin/java then JAVA_HOME would be set to /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_07. The rest of the script adds /bin/java to the search Path.
- Update RAY_SERVER_PATH in run_daemon.sh. This should be set to the directory where red5.jar is located; without the trailing "/".
- make scripts and binaries executable: chmod ugo+x ffmpeg.exe ray.sh run_daemon.shsetting to 777 is overkill, and frankly does not make any sense.
- change the webapps red5-web.properties variables: find ./webapps/ -name "red5-web.properties" -print0 | xargs -0 /usr/bin/perl -pi -e 's/virtualHosts\=0.0.0.0/virtualHosts\=a.b.c.d:1935/g' (make sure to substitute a.b.c.d with the IP address of the interface that will be accepting connections; typically your outward facing internet IP).
- modify access.dat. Put the entire URI of the server that will be connecting to your RMS server. For example say the URL to your dolphin website is http://gotta.love.this/dolphin . In the access.dat file you need to put the entire URI portion of the URL in access.dat; in this case it would be gotta.love.this . I think the instructions are kind of confusing as it says to just use the domain name. If you would just put love.this in access.dat it will not work.
- I don't know if this is necessary, but I also added a.b.c.d:8088 to webapp.virtualHosts in ./conf/war/red5-web.properties.
I believe that covers it.
Hey Sammie, what platform/architecture are you running the girlscare.org site on? That site is the only one where I have seen the Video Recorder from the profile page actually record video. The boonex test site, rayzzz site, and several others all produce bad results. From the client side everything looks like it went ok but when you preview the video it is blank. The reason it is blank is because the RMS server threw a buffer underflow exception which in return causes ffmpeg to fail, which to the client produces the blank screen. I have read others who are getting the the java exception error, so I am curious about your environment and why it is actually working.
|
How about your JAVA? What flavor are you running? Sun supplied, CentOS supplied package, other repository package, opensource, etc...
I am using the sun supplied jdk-1.6.0-07 installed from the binary installer. I got the exact same exception error on a debian system running the samve version of JAVA. So 0 for 2 on different platforms using the same flavor of JAVA.
|
Frikkn Stoopid!!!!!
It was the path to the JAVA that was whacked!
I set JAVA_HOME to be /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_07/jre and, DING...we have a winner!!!
Sammie can you approve my video on the girlscare site? Now that I am getting recorded video and thumbnails, I can't approve videos. The broser acts like I want to download a a flash-object rather then load up the video approve screen.
|
Sammie, thanks, I see the approved video now on your site. It is kind of lame that it does not integrate your profile videos onto your main profile page.
I only got the video to record once. I also was able to see moderator approve screen (once).
Unfortunately, I spoke too soon. All other times the buffer.underflow java exception is thrown.
Just when I think I have learned something, just find more stuff that doesn't work.
This code is extremely sensitive to its environment.
I think the next step will be to setup a CentOS 5.2 server and run everything locally and see if the same exceptions can be reproduced.
|
Apparently RMS hates me, or I am doing the exact same thing wrong each time.
I installed RMS on Ubuntu 8.04 Server i386 with open-java and get the exact same JAVA exception error right after stopping the recording from video profile. All of the other "RMS" features appear to work.
Before giving up, I will try on a clean CentOS 5.2 install.

RMS appears to be a problem for some and not for others. I unfortunately have this problem. It's probably something simple that's stopping the final connection to occur.
I've downloaded the latest RMS for Windows and installed it on Windows XP SP2 box. Opened up the router ports etc. Changed the access.dat to include the domains such as boonex.com when using the RMS test tool (http://www.boonex.com/rms.html) however I'm not sure if I/m using that correctly as I only put the WAN IP address.
RMS starts up no problems. Before I start the RMS server I check the ports using http://www.canyouseeme.org. As expected I get an error. Once I start the RMS server I check the ports again, 1935, 5080, 9999 etc. All good. Ports open and being listened to. When I try to connect, you know the story. Can't connect. I've modified the red5-web.properties virtual hosts to myip:1935.
Is there any way I can check on the machine the RMS is installed to try and connect just to eliminate the issue being connectivity from the outside world ?

I have had the same problem as well. The chat room, and the IM's were not working.
I had to turn my RMS back on, on my server. But, that only fixed the chat room.
IM's are still not working in Firefox.
Everything works okay in IE, just not Firefox.
Does anyone know why IM's dont work in Firefox?

Hi All,
I have read and re-read your posts trying to get Red5 and dolphin to work. Like some of the others, its one step forward to steps back.
I am still trying to dial in Red5.
Here is my question - Dumb as it may be: Where the heck is the "access.dat" file. I have search hi and low and cannot find this file.
I have verison 6.1.4 installed Ad-Free
OS FreeBsd 7.04
MySql 5
Apacehe 2
PHP 5.2.6 with Suhosin-Patch 0.9.6.2
Thank you,
EagleRose

Color me confused. I thought Red5 was the RMS. If it is not, what is it then?
When reading the requirments of the software it requires Red5 or equivalent to run. Now I got Red5 directly from the ports in my OS which got it from Red5's site.
|
Identical problem here. I get a connection failed and then connection closed. Configured everything as per Sammie's advice, opened up all of the ports she mentioned (just in case - lsof tells me it's only listening on 2 but NEVER KNOW, I'm that frustrated), configured all the apps..
Something must be set up right because if I try punching in "video" as the app name, the one app I have not yet configured, it spits out the InvalidApp error, which means the server is responding.
Now, a few questions. The global app - is it a necessary startpoint for the Ray applications, and how crucial is it? Curiousity.
Also, I have a few IPs set up for my network interface, and the site ray is residing on lives on an IP different from the main one. That shouldn't affect anything right? I mean I can clearly reach the server.
Lastly, Ray uses red5, so i should be able to grab the latest version of red5 off their server and update ray with it, correct? It seems like that has resolved issues for some of the people here.
Overall it's been quite a frustrating experience, and I do hope I can fix it somehow.

global and root red5-web.properties file say this for version?
webapp.virtualHosts=*,localhost, localhost:5080, 127.0.0.1:5080
mine bang in everytime

Ok, I have unexpectedly found a solution to this problem. To be honest it seems like it was working all along despite what the diagnostic tools have said!
I followed all sorts of instructions including the ones listed here. The boonex.com/rms.html tool kept always saying the connection failed and then it closed, and the port testing application that comes as part of Red5 (and hence RMS which is basically Red5 with a few applications rebranded) kept saying it wouldn't connect as well.
I then decided to go into Ray and punch in my IP as the RMS server address anyway and voila, it worked!
I did not perform any special configurations aside from what recommended in the wiki. First off, I ensured all the proper ports are open in the iptables firewall. Then for "webapp.virtualHosts=" in folder of the each of the webapps I specified the general wildcard, just to be safe, as well as my domain name with two port numbers for it as follows:
webapp.virtualHosts=*, example.com:1935, example.com:5080
I also edited access.dat to include my example.com domain name (obviously that's not my real domain name).
I do not have Java in the same folder as the rms, that has no bearing on the functionality so long as the path specified under ray.sh is correct. Just run ray.sh and watch the output, it should say that all your applications have started correctly, and you should be ready to go. Just punch the IP of the server RMS is hosted on into Ray and it should connect just fine (for me, RMS and Ray are installed on the same machine).
So, it seems like the rms.html tool is there just to confuse everybody. It took me literally weeks of trying, and I discovered the 'solution' just by typing out the address out of frustration. Of all the sources of help only sruckh responded to my cries for help, and neither the some of the more knowledgable members around here nor (especially!) the Boonex support have been of any assistance. Yes, they're deeply involved in development of Dolphin 7 or whatever, but it seems like the story is repeating over and over for others on this forum.
I hope this helps others, and let me know if you're having issues setting this up, I'll try to help out.

3 posts thats really crying for help. oh well, i think many people posted answers, and if you were not so wrapped up in trying to use Red5, and use what the instructions as well as the members posts said, you would have saved yourself a ton of time. yes the rms test sites are most of the time broken, i too spent countless hours running those tests, and would get connection failed, that is why you did not see any of my posts rely heavily on what was being reported from those sites, but moreso on what was being reported from Ray when you entered in the IP address where you had installed RMS.
good job on getting it figured out, but honestly, i dont see where you were really crying for help.

When a GIG is not enough --> Terabyte Dolphin Technical Support - Server Management and Support |
For your information, DosDawg, I have PM'ed and emailed a number of other people asking the same questions with no replies. Am I supposed to gather a certain amount of posts to qualify for the status of somebody needing help? Why the Red5 utilities never worked I am not sure, but the boonex.com/rms.html page provided correct responses to the Free RMS server which to me was the, apparently false, assurance that the tool itself is working properly.
More than anything however I was dissatisfied with the lack of support from Boonex. Yes, I understand it's crunch time before Dolphin 7 comes out but that's why you have developers and support staff, ideally not represented by the same people. And yes, I do have a paid license.
One thing for certain - I am glad to have figured it out after all this time spent on making it work, especially since I won't have to use any external services to host my RMS. The choice of Boonex hosting seems to be limited, and I'm sure it would be a delight getting customer service from someone as pleasant as you.

Is there anything wrong with being a 100-year old thailandian woman looking for sex with a sheep? I don't know about your place of residence but around here that would be called descrimination in which case you wouldn't be getting any customers full stop :P.
Regardless, I suppose it works now which is a relief. Now if only it worked as well as it does in Firefox but in IE and Chrome...

Looking for SEX
I am a sexy Thailandian looking for hot sweaty sex with a sheep.
lol did i miss something? Wales has a great supply of sheep :)

Earpick, freedom of speech is what i agree with....but surely your not really a 100 yr old thailandian woman looking for sex with a sheep, and surely you cannot say where you come from.. they allow zoophilia or beastiality...believe me theres quite a few animal rights people on here who will not tolarate your humour, you could be stuck in future when you need help from us. |
Fine, you got me, I am not 100, and I'm a male. And I wouldn't ever do anything to the poor sheep :). I love animals!
Ok, perhaps love is not the right word? I err.. have a great appreciation for flora and fauna but on an no way sexual or otherwise unusual and/or unnatural level.
|
Hi,
What other solution you are using, can u show the url, is it working fine with your site?
|
Sammie / Dawg - If I understood correctly, you offer RMS?? Please send me more details.
OR - anyone out there who will install RMS on my server - this is one project I don't want to DIY, especially after reading this lengthy thread.
CyberXing's site says that they are currently not taking new customers - so I'm up the creek right now, someone throw me a paddle please!
Thanks!
p.s. - I too am willing to sell #10089 , but I'll undercut Sammie and sell it for $40.00!! LOL
Oh! And please, leave the poor sheep alone! It may take me a couple of days to get the image of the 100 year old Taiwanese lady with the sheep out of my head!! Thanks for a good laugh today!

The solution posted by earpick works!
Thank you.

I have solved the problem of the java.lang.nullpointerexception when using the RMS server on a local windows machine
I am using windows Vista on my laptop to test Dolphin 6.1.4
The problem was that localhost CANNOT be used, an external name eg myname.com MUST be used
I have a free name from dyndns.com and it gets updated automatically when the dynamic IP changes This can be done with a software client or as in my case by my Dlink router.
1)Change ServerName in httpd-conf in apache from localhost:80 to myname.com:80 and restart the Apache server
2)In dolphin/inc/header.inc.php Change $site['url'] = "http://myname.com/dolphin/"; was http://localhost/dolphin DO NOT CHANGE $db['host'] = 'localhost';
3) Change access.dat to add myname.com
Start rms server and Voila, you're good to go
|
Speak to http://www.boonex.com/unity/LyubovL
And ask her to add your domain to the RMS server after this is done it will work.

Hello and good day. How do you know RMS is working? When I punched in my internal IP address without making any of your modifications, Ray did not give an error. Are their widgets that were not working which are working now? Can you be more specific?
Also, did this resolve the issue with Ray Desktop? I have been trying to get this application to load for a week now with no resolution. I have download the application, created the module but when I try to launch it, I receive an error of that states it is trying to update skins. After running your modification, I am still receiving this error.
Has anyone resolve this issue of Ray Desktop?
Thanks!
