We really, really need to have some kind of "notify me when someone responds" feature in the forums. This is all over the place now - even most blogs have this feature. No one will keep going back to see if anyone has responded to a forum post, unless that forum is really busy. This can really help with community development and making a site more active. I begged and begged for this to be in D6, and am disappointed it didn't make it into D7. If Boonex won't do this, it is a needed mod. |

it is already in D70, just add topic to flagged to get notified when somebody responds! Rules → http://www.boonex.com/terms |
Alex - You know I just read that, and think it is fantastic that this has been added to D7 - reallly - that is great. I'm just not sure people will know it is an option though - I didn't. I'm not even sure people will know what the word "flagged" means, or what its function is.
Usually, on blogs and forums with comments, the standard is a little checkbox at the bottom of the post that says "notify me when someone responds". It is a completely obviously control that everyone understands. Could we get that? You wouldn't even have to change the existing "flagged" tab, just add this checkbox also. If this doesn't make it into the next version, maybe someone could help out with a little mod for this.
Thank you
Rob

Most forums use the word 'Subscribe' instead of Flag. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
Orca forums have very little in the way of gadgetry. (Orca forums have very little of anything period) The biggest problem with email notifications is it can create a MOUNTAIN of outgoing emails stressing the server. Using a topic flag system eliminates that problem but doesn't notify the owner until they log back in. This defeats the whole idea of notifications and keeping your members interested where they will keep logging in.
I am hoping someone mods the VBulletin for Dolphin in the near future. Their notification system is nearly perfect. You can even set it where it only notifies someone once if a post is updated. This takes the user off the notification list for that thread. That way, you don't get endless notifications if the thread is lively resulting in a dramatic cut to the outgoing email loads.
Lets face it, emails can be the biggest boondoggle for any community. Staying off the spam lists has to be your first concern in any application of subscription type email responses.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me before, but I can of course change the word "flag" in the language keys. I'd still rather have a little checkbox, but changing it to the word "follow" would be ok for now. I changed several instances of the word "flag" to "follow" or "followed" in the language keys, but I can't find the most important one. It is the one you see when you are looking a post that says "Flag/Unflag". I search for that exact string in the language keys, but I can't find it. Could someone tell me where it is and how to find it.
Thanks
Rob

modules/boonex/forum/integrations/base/langs/en.php
Make change ---> recompile forum language
Download/Install this --> http://download.cnet.com/Agent-Ransack/3000-2072_4-10043846.html
It'll make finding finding strings like Flag/Unflag in files easy. Just enter the string you want to find, specify a directory to search, and it'll find every place the string exists.

hey H,
after installing the exe on local drive does this require also that you download your entire site or just the files you wish to search i suppose?
at any rate i went and looked at it and have it downloaded.
i have used notepad++ for searching regular expressions, and np++ has an ftp plugin that allows for pretty much real time file manipulation.
at any rate, im sure this will help some who are having troubles finding those hidden strings.

Actually Dawg, I keep an unzipped Dolphin on my local machine for this sort of thing. 45MB is a big chunk of files (about 5,000 files) to search through on a remote server. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |

i hear ya would be great information to share if these findings were documented so that others could know where to find xyz.
i am dealing with this sill paypal thing in RC3. its quite a mess, but digging through it. also have been in discussion with one of the members on here who offered to code for payalert or alertpay or stormpay or whatever it was.
i like SVN for that exact reason HL, that way you are actually dealing with a live site and then your edits can be saved, then once you committ you have a working local copy and a sync'ed production copy.
