Ok, so I've been looking at all the various Facebook mods on the market and must admit I'm not sure exactly which one is going to best serve my needs. At this point in time, what mod(s) give a user the feeling that they aren't missing a thing as they aren't exactly going to let facebook go? Does it require multiple mods to keep them on my site but still fully connected to what's going down over on facebook. From a new dolphin user perspective, you going through the market and looking at dates of when the mod was created and the fact that a of changes take place, I'm assuming different developers are inspired by whats needed and what to put put together that package that has been achieved yet, but then again, the there's also the developer who is continually improving their mod to meet the dolphin users needs as well, so you can't just go by dates either. The demos for some reason aren't really doing it for me. Can anyone shed some light on the current thoughts about facebook integration with Dolphin? My apologies for so many words. |
Is this a subject people don't like to touch? Perhaps nobody has been around since the time I posted it? I don't want to just ask what's the best facebook mod because judging by what I've seen there are a lot variance between mods. If I could code this stuff myself I would and hope to someday, but for now I'm up to my ears just learning how to manipulate blocks and menus to get my first website going. Been thinking about throwing together a test system that I can trash and crash Dolphin and learn more finding time....ughhh. |
Perhaps you should describe what you're looking for. Facebook has limits as to what can be used outside of facebook, so eliminating the need to even go to facebook or as you put it, "give a user the feeling that they aren't missing a thing" simply will not be possible.
So if you want suggestions on mods, perhaps you should come up with a list of what you want to do on your site.

Cool deano, thanks. I guess Im thinking something along the lines of:
Knowing when a friends have posted something
Posting a status on my site and it sync with facebook showing on their facebook status
commenting on media and it showing on their status at facebook
Stuff like that really
Oh! games they play on my site...somehow transfer those "brandiluv successfully achieved gold level even though she should be washing that pile of dishes in the sink" messages LOL
|
If everything you want to do rivals what Facebook already does, maybe you should just build an ap page on Facebook...
Facebook this, Facebook that. It's just a useless topic anymore. I'm not as nice as Deano but I do agree with him that you need to SPECIFICALLY decide what your site is going to be about and try to build something with a new idea instead of feeding off what's already been done to death.
Boy, I'm in rare form today.

Dear God Skyforum no doubt...what a crappy thing to say! JKJK
I don't particularly care for facebook...seriously. I like the way it keeps people up to speed with Friends and Family, but all the negative crap that goes along with it ruins it for a lot of people...me being one of them. The ideas I have for my site are bigger than that of a person starting their first website though, and it pulling it all together is pretty overwhelming. I gottat pull my "Friends" away from facebook, and from what I see, a lot of folks feel this way. The idea is to keep 'em on our site and whatever good that connect integration does is beyond me. Facebook has it's roots firmly planted...no doubt they hit the jackpot with their idea, but, I have they feeling that we are coming prime for people to start looking for something new and if we give'em enough reason they will start to trickle a way more and more. My site aspires to bring a little bit of focus back to community. Facebook isn't focused on community effort I don't think really. It's generic like YouTube, but I'm not baggin' on either. I want my site to be defined yet offer freedom as well...not an easy task. But thanks SkyForum, You're keepin it real and I respect that....I tend to be the more disillusioned of my kind...but I got my reasons.
|
mmmmm??? I bet we got the same reasons lol...? I can see that you dont exactly want to build facebook, and that you have a passion for what you want to do. Boy are you going to need it!
There are thousands of FB clones on here... and NONE of them is doing anything. We have people whos sites we have never heard of using splash screens because they think they are the next big thing.... A splash screen doesn't turn you into facebook - it just stops visitors seeing what your site is about and then they leave without joining. Dont go down this messy road. Build YOUR site. make it UNIQUE - but use facebook for all that you can get from it! It's a bitch - exploit it.
It has gathered the largest single collection of human information and interaction ever assembled in human history - Take what you can from that and find ways to use it to rip members, advertising revenu and just about everything you can from facebook - There are ways! "keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer." Isnt that what they say?
As facebook suffers its minor decline (it wont dissapear like others have suggested) someone (probably on dolphin) is going to get lucky. If you have the origionality, the balls, very deep pockets, patience, business accumen and a bucket load of luck then there is no reason why it can not be you.
Just stay away from the swamp and drudgery of copying the format of the big sites and the massive business mistakes that go with it. It so anoys me sometimes to see so many on here with such good intentions drowning because they all make the same mistakes.
Hope you keep your head above water,
If you think we have the same reasons for delusions you can message or add me if you wish.

Damn straight and well said Nathan...I got most of what you listed there and am used to being dropped into a mess so often, it became natural for me to just start diving in myself. I avoided facebook for a long time, knowing it had a lot of good it offered, but figuring it would conflict with my personality. A boss actually got me to join a while back and I knew what his intentions were from the start....he didn't like my kind of doing a job like a good support tech should and cared only about numbers- devastating for a help desk. I fell Ill and lost the ability to communicate properly (brain issue). When I had to go on medical leave he told me facebook would help my communication skills which were lacking (suddenly after 2 years as a fast excelling tech). He wanted to keep an eye on me while I was gone. I joined just to show him how ridiculous his plan was and that facebook can actually work against him, after all, he was looking for any reason to fire me after an incident involving a lazy developer, him, and me. His plan backfired and facebook became the platform that showed exactly how sick I became. In the end I returned and was fired after another tech he intentionally moved to the cubical next to mine set me off. The company lost and was found for wrongful termination....As I knew all along though- FACEBOOK's bad out-weighs the good because companies are exploiting the information that facebook is feeding them. Folks are trading their freedom on facebook and I'm going to try to save as many good people as I can, and the bad...well, facebook can keep 'em, they won't like my cheesy site anyway. That was a lot of TMI but, the term TMI is pretty much used just by friends your comfortable with or losers who need to check themselves. I watch too many people's life be screwed up by things said on facebook yet the people who were really crying out for help or encouraging others ridiculed. I guarantee you if I see people hurting others on my site, they wont be members for long...Free Speech isn't free. Project deaflog is aims to redefine communication and give voices to folks who deserve to be heard. It's bigger than me, and the only thing I'm lacking on your list Nathan is money. It's only money though, and there are ways around that if like you said, I do things right and don't make the mistakes that cause heavy setbacks- TIME - the other form of money. Ok, time for me to get off my soapbox and get back to work. Who's got that kickass facebook solution I'm looking for? Any Takers?
Thanks Nathan

Ok. (boy, this is gonna hurt). Since I posted here originally, if you can call it that, I have revisited the entire Facebook thing. I still stand by my statement but for different reasons now.
Facebook is a sickness as is all computer use that has no direction or purpose. Incessant game playing, ridiculous nagging, posting every time you buy a new pair of socks or meet a new girl at the bar, Just endlessly pedantic information shuffling.
Having made the original Facebook bash post in this thread, I came to a really big realization. All those millions and billions of people on Facebook need our help and the only way to get their attention is to go into the Devils den and draw them out. Hence I am a Facebook user who has managed to farm 1655 'Facebook friends' from all over the world into my embrace in an effort to "save them'.
You cannot find out anything personal about me on my page except possibly for my age and what I do for a living. You can't tell when I get up, or when I go to bed. You can't tell what I use to wash my now, very short, gray hair. Or what toothpaste I use or whether I'm "In a relationship with someone" or even if I'm straight or gay. What you can tell is I drive a tow truck. You can also tell that I have another site, a Dolphin site called TowNation.com
That brings me to today's revelation. I have finally connected my site to Facebook in two very important (and successful, I might add) ways. First, by clicking a very large, blue button on my site, I can instantly SUCK YOU AWAY from Facebook and into my towing and recovery domain, hence saving you from sure armageddon! Then, once that's done, I can entice you to use my second new mod to SUCK EVEN MORE FACEBOOK USERS FROM THE BRINK OF HELL and into TowNations embrace, all your friends who will now think of you as a HERO for doing so!
Everyone needs to step up and help us in this cause! GO OUT AND START SUCKING TODAY!
Thanks Deano. Your facebook mods will help us all SAVE THE WORLD FROM UTTER DIGITAL DESTRUCTION!

Ok SkyForum, I hope you aren't drawing me in to look like an ass...I dig what you had to say. I find truth in what you said just then. There are so many forms of disease in the world today, and we indulge in them way to easily. It's hard for goodwill to flourish if we're wrapped up in our own pride. Much respect bro- CLASSY!
I won't touch the Armageddon comment- that'll pull me back up to the soapbox. LOL
I will say this though- I am starting to get the feeling that newbies got there work cut out for them here on Boonex. I've had a lot of good to say about developers, even though it seems some topics don't necessary rank high enough on their priority to mess with. Those of us that have poured all the little money we HAD into our idea of a website are in for a shock when we find that we have to sift through the BS to get answers for issues we're facing. I came across a forum last night that set me a bit sideways seeing someone offering advice that looked to be innocent but spelled sure disaster for any newbie that happened upon it and didn't know any better. Not Cool.
I try to keep in mind that there some things at play which must be considered:
1- Some people are inverted and enjoy watching people crash n burn- LOSERS!
(Simply love the fact that they themselves have failed to properly install certain mods and choose to help someone suffert with them....real classy there!)
2- Some developers simply look at their mod as though it's something they purchased and are re-selling...therefore it has a limit to it's value.
3- Some developers prefer to have someone else deal with us petty newbies who dare step foot on their coding turf....sell the mod, make some dough, and go.
4- Some developers are flat swamped! They'll get back to you when they can, knowing their is enough documentation that is easily found.
5- Some developers think that newbies deserve to crash and burn because that's just the life of being a tech- Good job guys- You senselessly decreased the value of your code because the tech assumes he's done his stuff right and finds that your installation instructions are flawed.....on purpose maybe? Generates the need for install service, right?
6- Some developers are kick ass and see their code as an extension of their character- I dig these folks...they got their head screwed on straight!
7- Some developers and techs withhold information and claim to be protecting newbies from disaster....BS You got that ridiculous "JOB SECURITY" mentality that ruins this business- idiots. (When someone makes their product free and you benefit from it you aren't gaining anything by withholding code....we are going to find a way around you, and we'll steer clear in the future.)
Dolphin is a great product, no doubt. But, I must say, a manual would be nice to have. I've crashed and burned enough as a tech, and can't afford to make mistakes now.
I'm sure I'll catch hell for that one.
Overall, the trash here is at a minimum compared to what I've see elsewhere.
mods4dolphin - Thanks for your response. I've managed to look at quite a few facebook mods and yours and deano's look promising. I just got news today that my unemployment check is on hold until this time next month due to a change in my filing status and the process is mandatory. Been through it a couple times before so I know what to expect. I'll get with one of you guys as soon as I can secure some spare cash...(Hopefully before the unemployment back pay...I only got 9 weeks before my site has to be ready). This will give me time to find some sites that have facebook mods in effect cuz I'm having a hard time understanding for some reason here.
Much appreciated guys!

That would all make sense if this post was in fact, about you. LOL. Somewhere along the line, it lost that title and became a general rant about things you have very little control over.
It's the topic you chose. Some topics get good response, some get incredible response, most get a couple of responses and even more don't get any response at all, then there's the Facebook topic. a dangerous topic no matter who you are here....
But I digress and hereby relinquish the thread back to it's owner in hopes he can still solve his problem...

You're a good guy SkyForum. Thanks...back on topic.
I guess I'm not sure why the facebook topic sucks...so I guess I'll leave it be.
I'll try to keep my communications specific...It's difficult.
Once I learn Dolphin better, I'll be able understand what people are talking about in these forums and be able to describe what I'm trying to accomplish.
Sometime you all reply to folks with an assumption that a person either understands Dolphin or they need to pay someone who does. I aint got that choice right now. I've trashed my site a handful of times getting to where I am now.
I spent my money where I could get along ways with what I'm doing and certainly keep me busy for a while.
But I'm gonna need that facebook stuff and a good number of other mods before all is said and done.
This topic has served enough purpose- If any other developers have options for me they know where to find me. Till then, I'll be waiting for my funds to resume and look into learning how to integrate APIs in the meanwhile.

Got Mod4dolphin's facebook/twitter combo.....freaking rocks! Well, at least the facebook part kicks....don't know about the twitter yet, haven't installed it. maybe here in the next week or so. But that facebook mod...SWEEEET! Folks is gonna dig it! My wife thought it was pretty coo too. Definitely worth it! |
It is good eh..... A few small glitches here and there... but one of the best I think.
BUT..... the friends inviter on it sucks.... We use deanos friends invter instead. it works with the mods4dolphin, but is a HUGE improvement.
Also, watch what limits you allow users to import photos, video etc. Your site can become a mess in days and you gane end up with a huge hosting bill. We dissabled most of the importing. Even in our testes we imported over 400 photos from 2 accounts because it imported everyting 4x.
