Explanation of membership status types

Can anyone point me to some thorough explanation for how the membership status types (Suspended, Banned, Approval, etc.) work? I find nothing in the documentation, and combing the forums has given me some answers, but not enough. I need to know complete details of how a user gets put in each status, what functions are available in each (log-in, profile visibility, contact to others, contact from others, notifications, etc.) and how the status is changed. Any links?

Approval is when you require the member to confirm email I think via activation link

Suspended is when the user leaves your site publicly but keeps their account ... they can sign in and make the account active again at anytime. The profile will not be visible to others and if they happen to land on the suspended profile the visitor will get message on page telling that the page cannot be viewed.

Banned is when admin ban's the user from the site ... In-turn they cannot login or be active at your site
