Enabling Cache for HTML, CSS, JS, ETC. =Faster???

I know this question has been discussed before, but I still can't decide what to do.

In Advanced Settings>Template - Should we enable cache for HTML files, CSS files, JS files, and should we enable compression for CSS/JS files?

"Of course", you're saying, "why wouldn't you?"

Well, I have tested this out a million different ways and every time my site seems faster when I DON'T enable caching for all three.

Right now I have only cache for HTML and CSS enabled.  I do not have cache for JS files selected and I don't have the compression for CSS/JS files selected.  When I select all of these, it "seems" my site is slower.  But maybe I'm just imagining this time and time again.

Can someone who really knows what he/she is talking about please give me a final answer so I can just stick with this solution.  Please.

Thanks!!!

Or perhaps a response from somebody who "thinks" he/she knows...

I haven't really noticed much of an advantage with having cache enabled. If you aren't noticing much of an improvement (and are having cache-related issues), you can just disable it. Alternatively, you can also try using the two new cache systems added in the latest release.

Magnussoft,

Thanks for your response.

Did you select: enable compression for CSS/JS files on your site?

Just curious.  If so, do you find this does anything?

run the test   with the options enabled and then without, the results should be clear.
(I have them all enabled)

In admin it says the two new cache systems (EAccelerator, Memcache) may require custom server setup.

Does this mean we shouldn't try them unless we know how to do these custom server modifications?

I have them all enable too, much better results...

I ran a test with three different setup with the cache features

I got similar results when I tested on this site (gtmetrix.com).

As a result, I too have enabled all of these options.

However, I still can't help from thinking that my site seems slower when I navigate it (when they are all selected).

Oh well, perhaps it's all just my imagination.  I guess it's time to think about other things.

Enable cache for html, css, js files will make your site definitely faster I think.

Enabling compression will make it even faster (since files are smaller) if your server don't compress it already. So if the server compress these files already you will not notice any changes. Also server compression is better since it compress more files.

Compression is already enabled if you applied recommendations from this tutorial:

http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/HostingServerSetupRecommendations

To check for sure if it is already enabled refer to the above tutorial.

Hi there,

although we would like to enable all of this, we do bump into a "small" issue:

if our users are using IE to access our site, and they have not the most updated version (and yes, we have 90% using IE and I would guess half don't have automatic updates by default....), they get boxes with crosses instead of pics (icons for home, account, profile, mail, for example, do not show up, just a box).

Any help with this?

And what would be the "max page width" recommended?

You need to turn off cache for images, old versions of IE don't support it.

Also in last versions you can't change this setting - it is off by default.

Thanks Alex, we had pretty much figured that out, but was hoping for possible a solution; at least it  was helpful to know there is no other option  :)

Just thought I'd post some more test results I have ran this morning..

I suppose this service is good to check the site speed but I'm sure the results will vary depending on server load at the time of testing.

See screen-shot for speed results of the new 7.0.4 it is much faster.

Thought you all would enjoy this site as well for testing your site speed and what exactly is slowing the page down.. http://www.webpagetest.org

I found that my "earthball, google translate, and addthis additions to my index page add an additional three seconds to the load time, with out these add ons the page load time drops down to three seconds for whole page to load.. I'm going to include a link to my server test.. not sure if it will work on your end or exactly how long, or even if you care... but here it is  http://www.webpagetest.org/result/101125_4C/

and this link is for boonex.us what a difference in speed.. http://www.webpagetest.org/result/101125_67/

Happy Holidays
