Okay, this doesn't really apply to me as I run Dolphin Ad-Free and I run my own RMS, but it does apply to the majority of you here if you do the following:
1. If you run Dolphin Free with the Boonex Ads and have Video IM, Video Chat and/or Boards the price you pay for your site is about to increase.
2. If you run your dolphin site on a Shared Server and connect to the Boonex RMS your price is about to go up.
Why? In Andrew's blog he stated that the BMS (Boonex Media Server) is about to go away shortly. This means you have a couple of options left if your running Dolphin Free. You can drop Video Chat/IM/Boards or you can begin the hunt for a new RMS connection, that is going to cost you money if you choose to continue this item.
Now, while it's realized that many who own Dolphin sites don't have the funds to just pay for all the toys, bells and whistles such as a VPS or Dedicated server which is required to run your own RMS and if your in that position, you probably don't really have the funds to pay for an RMS lease to keep your members happy. Your final option is to look for a host who will offer your the RMS with your server bill, this one may be the most economical in the long run.
But in the end, an era is ending in the Dolphin world as Boonex retires the BMS and sends all the little dolphins out into the ocean to find a reputable RMS hoster. It's times like these that I am glad I own my RMS and don't have to put out extra money for changes like this.

Well unless i was doing something stupid when i first started up with my dolphin, i could never get BMS to work for me, so went for my own RMS early on, i always thought that Boonex free RMS never worked anyway and nobody really used it. So this announcment of it going wasnt really a big loss to anybody. Perhaps in hindsight though, the reason i could never get on it was because it was always full. So perhaps this will effect more people than i first though.
Mind you, its never a bad thing to get your own resourses, it will pay off in the end anyway.
regards
Tyke

I got all that stuff disabled. except the I.M. and photos. I think it's crazy for any newbie like myself to have any of that enabled unless they got deep pockets. My philoshophy is, if people like the idea behind my site and sign up, well if enough money is around to enable one featutre at a time would be bonus. |
www.dolphininstalls.com has hosting for 14.99 month, includes RMS, and jimmy takes good care of your site. If your BMS is not working it is probably your shared hosting account, you have to get your provider to open the ports, I asked ciritex for months to do this and they never got around to it, jimmy installed my site that day and handles my updates as soon as I ask. I do not make any money telling you guys about this, I am just that happy with the hosting and support. |
Here something to think about. Simply get rid of the dolphin features that run the rms. Find other software and make it work with dolphin. When this happens that's exactly what we're going to do. We already had plans for this but, it might have to happen early. Chat and Im isn't that great anyway. I think we had decided to go with a skype application for this. |

If your looking to have Video function inside of your skype your still going to need a media server of some type. This is dependent upon the functionality of many sites out there that do not have the resources yet to pay for a VPS/Dedicated Server and thus been using Boonex's server.
In addition, if you do have a VPS/Dedicated and choose to install your own RMS onto it, you need to pay attention to cost factors here. This applies to those who are leasing out RMS also. Boonex has been paying $7000.00 US a month to run the Boonex RMS (That is a huge amount of money over the years that Boonex has put out and never once have they asked for a penny of it back beyond the ads that went on the sites). So if your site is heavy into video or your leasing your RMS to sites that are heavy video sites, then you can see this cost going up very quickly.
In the end, if your on the Boonex RMS you need to do some heavy research and figure out what is going to be the best solution for your site when the Boonex RMS is shut down. I am strongly suggesting that if your using it, make your arrangements as soon as you can so your site does not miss a beat when it is turned off.
\/ \/ \/ \/ Yeah I had to edit it. It is $700.00 a month Caltrade. Gotta love those commercial guys, they never miss a decimal or a comma. My mistake, I was just have so much fun pushing the zero key. 000000000 You should try it, it really is fun! 000000000000

Mydatery, didn't you just post something almost identical on the blog? I'm curious why you are posting this again here? I was never able to get the Dolphin RMS to connect anyway and from other posts here I thought is was mostly dysfunctional. Do many people here really use it?
Rob
p.s. I believe they said $700 a month, not $7,000 a month.
p.s.s. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think you need a media server for Skype - even for Skype conferencing, it is a peer-to-peer system.

In addition, if you do have a VPS/Dedicated and choose to install your own RMS onto it......
MD, it's worth mentioning, that VPS vary widely and if someone wants to run RMS on one, they need to shop for a VPS plan that will handle streaming media. I've seen a lot of VPS plans with only a 10mbps connection to the internet. I won't say those are useless, but they're close. A 10mbps connection will handle about 10 to 20 concurrent video connections. If you want to run RMS on a VPS, they need to make sure they have at least a 100mbps connection. Even then, they might violate TOS by running a BW hogging RMS.
My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
