Dolphin Forum - change thumb up into star rating

The Forum will be a very important part of my site. Users can post a question and other users can give their advice. Depending on the quality of the response / advice, users should be able to give a rating rather than just click on the thumb up. I am thinking of the star rating that you can find in other areas such as for articles, profiles etc.

I know that the Dolphin Forum works with another script but I was wondering if anybody out there does have experience with that kind of modification ?

It would be important that the star rating triggers an alert, only then it could be integrated into Modzzz point module that I have on my site.

Thank you for your feedback ! Smile

I suggest you go to the market here and purchase the PK Forum module and use it.  It is written in php.  It does not integrate into the other modules, such as groups, but if you don't need that, then buy the module in the market.  You can also install both, use the Dolphin one for modules such as the group and PK Forum for the main site forum.  The Dolphin forum was written in XLST and it is outdated now.  It was originally a separate product that was then moved into Dolphin.  XLST was one of those web "languages" that lost flavour; much like XHTML.

Thanks a lot for your comment geek_girl

I had checked the PKForum a while ago but since I was happy enough with the Dolphin Forum, I decided to go ahead with this. It is translated into German and Chinese, so it would take loads of time doing the translation all over again.

No matter the Dolphin Forum has an outdated script, I was hoping that someone knows how to modify it...

Btw, it is not possible to access the PKForum's demo and it says 7.3.4 compatibility not specified...

So did you check and see that it is compatible with 7.3.3?  7.3.4 was a minor update that wouldn't affect modules.  If it is compatible with 7.3.3 then it is compatible with 7.3.4.

It would be better to go with PK Forum and get the features you needed than to f around with Orca Forum just because of the translations.

It seems to be compatible with 7.3.3

I might give it another try and check it out. I am not sure if they actually have the feature I need.

Last time I checked it (after their last update), though, there were parts of the forum overlapping when seen from a cell phone and I was overall not that convinced

You are in the situation that you don't have the skills to do this and if you can't find someone with the skills willing to take on the job then you are just SOL.  You will be more likely here to find someone skilled in php and CSS than XSLT; and thus get PKForum customised to your needs.  While I have made minor changes in the Orca Forum; mostly in the php code, I don't know XSLT and don't have the desire to learn.  Try Craigslist or some of the other boards on the net.

I did look at the code in the Orca Forum that does the thumbs up; I am sure someone that knows XSLT could programme it for you.  The thumbs up is just a counter.  What you want is a weighted system; so it has to calculate the average of stars left; someone may leave a one, the next a four, the next a two.  So you have to calculate the average of the ratings placed to arrive at an overall rating and then display the stars.

By the way, the willingness of someone willing to do the job will depend on how much you are willing to compensate them.  How much are you willing to pay per hour for the work?

If there is someone out here who could do this job, I would be happy to hear what the charge would be.

Please pm me.
