Dolphin Clean Install/HFW/FileCTime Errors

As usual, I'm having a lot of trouble with HFW and my main site. Ever since I had to replace the site with a backup copy, there has been endless problems with filectime errors and ownership issues.

Each time I talk to them about it, all I get is (the folders are set to 777 and we've cleared the cache, this should solve the problem). I then send them the same response "specific folder permission settings have NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH FILE/FOLDER OWNERSHIP" Of course, it's like watching Deer in the headlights. I clear the cache, it goes away for a while, then after a couple days, I start getting the error emails again.

I'm tired of dicking with it. I'm not even sure it can be fixed. I've done endless Google searches about it and everyone has a different idea of just what a FileCTime error is. It's F_-ing ridiculous. Most agree though that it's some sort of ownership issue.

If I remove most of the mods from my current 7.09 site and get it back as close as possible to a stock setup, can I copy the DB into a fresh install of 7.1 when it comes available or am I forced to just do an update to maintain the current user data and settings?  I am thinking of changing the domain name back to the original site (towtalk.net) instead of the current townation.com and this opens up the possibility of a completely fresh and clean install.

How you uploaded your site?

Do you have an account created for your site in WHM and you are uploading in that account when logged as root?

My site was uploaded into a cpanel account setup for it in my whm. I have a VPS. I have several sites so setting them up and administering them is not new to me.

Just for your info. The site worked fine for a very long time. The admin menu system has no checks within it and I inadvertently deleted all my mods one day. The damage was so severe that I had no choice but to do a restore with a backup copy that HFW had.

I had them restore the files, I then went in and made the necessary changes to get it back online. That's when I found out  I could not change or modify any of the files for the site after the replacement. After nearly a week of them trying to fix it, I had to have an outside person with more knowledge than me SSH into the root server to correct ownership permission problems. The ownership of the files and folders were not assigned properly making it impossible for me to manage.

HFW has never understood this and even though my friend got the system back where I could manipulate the files and folders, it was never right after that. Each attempt to explain this to them has always been met with a complete lack of understanding of the problem and the solutions they provide never work.

Since I have no real way of checking ownership of the contents of my server except by SSH (something I have very little skill at), I have never been able to resolve this issue. It also makes it clear to me that HFW does not have it's own server farm but rents space from someone to resell to me. If it were their machines, they could have fixed this long ago.

Here is an example of the error message I receive daily from my site. The files being reported always change. It is apparent that it has something to do with the times recorded in a file when they are accessed. (I think)

Sky, use SSH as root and run this with the correct username, groupname and accountname:

chown -R username:groupname /home/accountname/public_html

Then delete all the caches..

It seems like too simple a solution for HFW to overlook but who knows??

I've given Prolaznik access. Don't want to make any changes until he's had a chance to look around. Soon as he's done, I'll do that. Thanks for the tip

I've done this a long time ago on his server but i guess it wouldn't hurt to do it again.

Who knows if HFW changed something in there as root user.....  

I forgot to add if you want a cheap fix and are truly sick of it...    turn off caching in the advanced options in admin panel.  clear the cache and cache_public folder then you will not get any more emails like that.

Hmm. Never thought of that. Seems like a simple fix. One question. If I turn off the cache, what kind of performance hit am I going to take?

turning off cache, vs performance hit. 

well there is really no way to answer that question, since none of us are privvy to the analytics running with cache = ON. 

there are a few factors that must be considered here. 

hardware and configuratoin of the machine

network connection and network backbone

disk RPM (generally 7200) is the standard.

FSB on the machine

Throughput on the localhost

i woud tend to think you may, may see a 3% - 20% deprecation on performance, but not running through cache. now what i can share with you, is that you can setup something like varnish, which i can only presume that a search of sourceforge will reveal something that we didnt know was there.
