Dolphin Caching; On or Off?

I keep reading about solutions to some problems is turning off this cache and that cache.  I am wondering just what caching should be turned on and what should be turned off?  What settings are others using?  I did notice once that when I turned off the template cache I lost the link to the member's profile, the nice http://my-nifty-site.com/member-name; that one had me scratching my head until I remember turning of the template cache and turning it back on fixed the problem.  I added the custom profile css to the member's account page and there has been times when I had to go into the backend and clear the css cache to get it applied to the page.  I am thinking of just turning off the css cache.

What sort of speed improvements do we see with Dolphin caching; assuming that is why it is there, to improve speed.  It certainly is a bother when you are making changes to your site.

Also, what about the disc caches as well?  Exactly what are they doing and why?

Most ALL of the issues i encounter are usually due to the JS cache and JS compression settings. This issue only occures on some servers. I have not tested it in full but it may have something to do with a php gzip compression option that is normally off by default on most servers. It could be other forms of compression that a host may have setup.

But most issues seem to be related to JS

Oh, yea i would recommend you turn off caching and clear it also when you start work on your site, and then turn back on when your done. It will save you a lot of headaches.

I normally run with caching off all the time anyway, but my sites are just module demo sites and because i am always working on something i never bother to turn it on.
