Default settings for installed Modules

For troubleshooting modules, I want to set a few of them back to their default settings. How do I find out what they were? What does Recompile Language mean?

If I uninstall and reinstall them, will this do the trick?

Is there a place where the default settings are listed?

A place that tells you exactly what each setting is for would be really cool too!
