D8 with Groups/Pages?

A year ago, there was a discussion about the Groups vs Pages mods that Andrew Boon ended with this information :

In this topic we have one important point raised and discussed. Basically, we agreed that PAGES system is needed, and that it should be an integral part of the script. There're mods that can provide some of the functionality and may work for some, but they do not remove the need for build-in "PAGES" functionality.

I have noted that we do work on PAGES/PROFILES, and yes, it's in Dolphin 8, but this doesn't mean that one has to wait until D8 to have them. This only means that we acknowledge the need and research possible implementations. D7.1 has received a lot of D8 ideas and same may happen again. Primary function of D8 at this stage is to be a "research lab", so consider PAGES as being worked on in a research lab.

Specific functionality aspects of "PAGES" are subject of different opinions and interpretations, but at this stage we just want to make sure we build a very flexible core base for them, in order to avoid any limitation during development of specific features. We do want Dolphin to be able to offer members the ability to create various types of "sub-sites" with rich, configurable functionality, permissions and moderation tools.

The conversation is here : http://www.boonex.com/forums/topic/Dear-Boonex-Groups-are-so-yesterday.2.htm

It's been over a year now so I guess (hope) that Boonex already has a clear idea about what D8 will include.

My problem is, the existing 'Groups' module is ineffective.  I can buy a module and there's plenty to choose from.  There's extensions that give more value to the native Groups module.  There's a number of 'Pages' modules that seem to simply duplicate the Groups module with a few add-ons/variations.  And then there's extensions that allow my members to manage sub-profiles (for personal use and for business promo, for example).

And here's my problem - I'm gonna be spending money, again, when I really don't know what Boonex is planning to add to D8, or if I should be holding my breath for D8 any time soon...what are your plans?

Its not so much the money, but if I'm to add an extension for my community to use and then find D8 coming out with something completely different...how will that affect my site and the content my members have since added?

So, can i have some sort of feedback from the Boonex people on this?  What are you projecting for D8?  When are you projecting a D8 release?  Should I wait?

Of course you will have to pay a few bucks for the add-on modules to extend the functionality, but when you are done, your users will be able to set up a fairly robust web presence on your Dolphin site.  Yes, this page mod is just a clone of the group module, but all I ever wanted Boonex to do was rename the groups module to 'Pages'.  Pages would work for both 'Groups', and users that just wanted to set up a web presence without being labeled a 'group'.

There are some other useful additions that come to mind, but what's currently available is a pretty good start.  If you wait for Boonex to come out with 'D8', that's all you'll ever be doing.... waiting.

My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees.

You can wait if you want, but it's probably going to be a while. We still have 5 more versions before even getting to 7.2.

As HoustonLively pointed out, you can get a free version of Pages here: http://www.boonex.com/m/pages-group-clone

or you can get a version for $10 here: http://www.boonex.com/m/pages-paid-version-2014-01-26 that includes 'Website' and 'RSS Feed' features.

Even if BoonEx did release a version of Pages that came with Dolphin by default, you can probably bet that it will be very similar to Groups (if not a clone itself). There are many additional features you can add to Pages as you can see on my market listings and yes, they may cost extra, but again, once it's done you will have a very robust Pages module to offer your members.

Or, you can choose another Pages option within the Market if they suit your taste.
