D7 RC3 Shoutbox

I have just upgraded to D7 RC3 from RC2.

Non-members cannot post to the Shoutbox, members can...

Problem: log out and then log back in and all the Shoutbox entries have dissapeared...

Bug or what?

Just remove the shoutbox.  It's a P.O.S.   I tried to get Boonex to make it a usable module.  I didn't have a lot of support with that endeavor.

Usually, I like you. You tend to call a spade a spade but you're dead wrong on your suggestion to remove the shoutbox. Even in it's current state, it's far better than nothing at all.

At least as far as my site goes. People get used to it and they use it quite heavily when it works. (If you want proof, go to towtalk.net and just watch) It will be an especially powerful tool in Dolphin because it allows the members who are currently logged in to communicate in real time with each other as they peruse the site. I agree with you that there are probably better solutions out there but some form of instant chatroom must be made available.

Some of my reasons:

  1. It allows you to easily communicate with someone else who is online at the same time. Many people actually time their entrances to my site to coincide with other users they have built a chat relationship with.
  2. It makes the site seem more lively.
  3. It protects your system from overuse by people who need to communicate immediately and the absence of the chat room forces them to post endlessly back and forth in the forums and blogs. (Like we do here!, lol)

On top of that, I am trying to figure a way where I can make that chatterbox available on every major page in my site. If it's made available, your users will feel much better about moving around in the site if they know they can continue their conversations as they do so.

POWER TO THE CHATTER! The ultimate goal on any portal site is ease of use and functionality. In my opinion, a successful chatterbox installation can make or break some sites and is, by far, the most powerful mod you can have. My current site has three different ways to chat and they all get used constantly.

You do realize we are talking about the shoutbox and not the chat system?

Yes. I do. The shoutbox IS the chat system that will be most used because it's the most accessible.

Ok, I have re-installed Shoutbox and I have tried to 'un-install and re-install' (system will not let me) and the Shoutbox still does not retain the messages for more than a few minutes.

Permissions are 644, I tried them at 666 but it still does not work properly.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Stuart

Below is the legacy version of the Boonex site, maintained for Dolphin.Pro 7.x support.
The new Dolphin solution is powered by UNA Community Management System.
