Custom Memberships

I have been scouring the forums for information about memberships and most of the posts refer to a paid subscription module. So in the absence of purchasing this module, what is the functionality of the built in custom membership setting that allows for prices? What I can't figure out is how someone can upgrade their membership from standard to a custom one. I created a premium membership and set a price of $10 for the year. Then I joined as a standard user but I cannot see where the user can upgrade his membership to the premium, nor is there any setting in the admin panel about linking paypal or any other payment gateway to this custom membership.

Is there supposed to be an upgrade your membership page block that I can enable? Or suppose I have multiple custom membership types, is there a page block to view membership options with a listing of the different plans I have created?

This is an update to my earlier post. I finally figured out that there is a module called memberships that I hadn't installed. I went ahead and installed it but the premium membership I created isn't showing up. It is just empty.

Update to prior post. I finally figured out that just creating a custom membership level does not mean it is enabled. I had to separately enable it. Now it is showing. To recap for those experiencing similar issues:

1) Install membership module

2) Install payment module

3) Create a custom membership level with pricing.

4) Place a checkbox next to that custom level and click enable.

5) Create a test user account and then confirm that the custom membership level is appearing by clicking on my memberships after logging in.
