Cron Jobs...... are they needed?

During the install, I was told to config 3 cron jobs:

cmd.php

notifies.php

cupid.php

Our site is a not a dating site so we don't want to send our members cupids.  I am assuming that I could leave that one out.  What do the other two do and would they affect the operation of the site if I leaved them out?  Thanx in advance.
