Chat, Chat +, Mess, what are the differences ??

Good Day,

I am site admin of one of oldest and one of the 1st million member person sites

Going out on my own, tired of asking someone else to do things ...... nice to join this group

So.....not a programmer, guy with design degree, but I am getting it done, thanks to this forum :))

One big confusion that I am not getting.....

I see different chats...... simple messenger etc.

Can someone please explain in simple terms what the differences are

I read something to the effect that chat+ can only be on 1 site in any server.

I had planned a VPS for this but it was hard to pass up TMD's professional deal @ $16 a month

(by the way they have hopped to it for me on every issue instantly, things I did wrong and are very patient, I quit my first VPS because of the server guys attitudes, so kudos on that)

So why do I want one chat or the other......I'd like to have video chat on mobile, in other site I run we have it but the 3rd party software producer stopped supporting mobile, which in this day and age is ridiculous....I have FB ad for other situation 65% are on mobile.

So thanks in advance for explanation and advice on what does what.....

Cheers and nice to meet you

Hi,

I can try my best to explain.

  • Chat is very old system, flash based and never really got updated. It provides basic, very basic chat. NOT mobile friendly. Can do video but needs RMS (Red5 Chat) server setup; you can rent one or do one yourself.

  • Messenger Chat is done in the site, the messages show up on the member menu if used and looks like a basic chat you would find on FB early days. It also allows video chat which ties into the Red5 server.

  • Chat+ is based on Rocket.Chat, I used it currently and it's the best you can get IMO. It provides mobile, mobile video, and so much more!!

through mobile without such??

I plan to do boith but $200 for IOS might be a bit of time for me.....

Thanks again for responding

 NO, the Chat+ is responsive.

It's basic but this is my Chat+ setup for my game server site, manofteal.com. Your welcome to make a test account to check out the options for the chat, on mobile, tablet or desktop.

https://chat.manofteal.com/ that's the full page version, and you have a iframe type chat on your site.

My site is using UNA, but Dolphin.Pro Chat+ windows are the same.

Hi,

Thanks again, I am on my way to your site do that...... nice design work on that page man, just beautiful, I hope mine looks half as good.

I just 10 minutes ago upgraded to a VPS.....might have been nice if somewhere in Boonex instructions

it stated you need that to use the Chat+, maybe I missed it, but its done they are changing me over and I bought this morning the Abserve theme, the drop down menu is really a way to get rid of the top page clutter I did not like, so.......on my way

The forum is great, Boonex explanations of things is lacking and works for you guys that are coding saavy, but Id guess most new folks like me may not be and in the forum peoples comments when asking questions stated they had A VPS for the chat+ or Id not have know now..... now I can move my other sites there too I guess.

Looks like time for a programming class for me.:))......

Thanks again

Well, thank you. It took a lot of work!

Sorry for long response, I don't get on Boonex much these days, I'm only on UNA now since I don't do D7 sites anymore.

I actually run the chat + server on a basic small form PC at work on my business internet connection. It doesn't take much PC to run just a chat server.

Isn't chat+ peer to peer?  From what I understand, that is the case.  So let's say I want to stream from my phone; each person connecting to my stream is making a new connection to me.  I will soon reach my data cap.  What one wants is to make one data connection to a server, that server then makes the connection to each person sending data to each  That way my data is just one connection; the data I am sending to the server.  Am I wrong here?  Do you have a resource to point me to for this?  This is important for some scenarios.

Isn't chat+ peer to peer?

 Yes.

But only needs,

Bare-metal Server

  • Intel Xeon E5-2603 v4 (or equivalent) [1.7 GHz, 6 cores]
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 500 GB hard disk or larger
  • Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (with or without docker)

The above minimal hardware configuration is ideal for corporate or group with up to 1,000 users, up to 300 concurrently active and moderate level of mixed uploads, sharing, and bot activities.

My site admin and moderators use Chat+ with the video conference module enabled.

Not sure if you're familiar jitsi.org but it is used in Chat+ and members can be invited via cell phones or a link for PC for streaming to one meeting place.

All Open Source.

OK, what I read, Jitsi Videobridge is a router that routes a video stream to different participants; which is exactly what we want.  I guess I need to visit Rocket Chat to see what they say.
