well, first and foremost, you should consider your post here " that wants to work for a decent price". that would severely depend on what you would consider a decent price. what is your hourly rate, are you college educated, do you have a special skill? is your time valuable?
personally i have seen programmers charge from $50/hour to $225/hour depending on the task at hand. then again, consider the surgeon, you need cancer removed, but you cant find a surgeon who works for a decent price according to your standards in defining a decent price, so you opt to die of cancer rather than pay the fair market value for the services required?
you can try oDesk, and see what you get from there freelancers[dot]com scriptlancers[dot]com
there are other freelance sites that are out there, where you can define your scope of work, take in x number of bids, and then you can evaluate exactly what the value of the request is worth.
if 5 programmers bid $100, and one programmer bids $30.00 logic and common sense would say the value of the scope of work requested is worth $100.00. if you opted for the $30.00 programmer, then you could expect 70% less in quality and knowledge on any given task.

Dosdawg: well i dont agree 100% with u, I found myslef for my some projects actually good indian programmers who charged 15 usd/hour - U have to consider that 15usd/hour is quite good money in india. If somebody charge 100 usd/hour doesnt automatically mean that programmer will be much better than 15usd /hour indian proprammer I also had an experience with programmer for 60 usd/hour which was pretty terrible... SO its more about how much time tomlivi wanna spent on chasing good cheap programmer. It took me one month searching before I got good one for 15 usd/hoor.
I also can recommend vietnamese programmers they also charge 15-20 usd/hour. BUT be cautios there is also tons of bad programmers whtever they charge 15 or 100 usd. Best is keep good eye on a reviews on freelancer dot com |
I have had good work done for me with guys from Scriptlance.com There are other sites as well. Cost is not a great indicator of value. I expect to pay more to coders in North America, there are no guarantees they are better then the Serbian guy who transformed my first big site from a dog into a thing of beauty. One thing that I have found works well at getting some sort of 'value' is to write a good quality specification for the job. Explain very clearly what you want as the outcome of the task. Explain the workflow/process that you are seeking. Give examples of similar sites/code/scripts. Follow that up with a clear explanation of how you intend to pay. ONLY use escrow payments and have clear project milestones. Make sure that you are all clear about your expectations as to IP rights and code ownership. If you do all this stuff right then you will scare off most of the people who are crap because they will see the task, understand it is out of their skillset and that they will not get paid for bad work. When I put out a project out to tender in this way I can usually take the prices from the lower end of those submitted. One final point - if a person asks me how much I want to pay, or what my budget is then I tend to place the guy on a short leash. I ALWAYS say that it is for the contractor to decide the price - if he comes up with a price for the spec that I can not or will not afford then I will either reduce the scope of the work or wait til I can afford it. If I tell the contractor the size of my wallet then I am likely to get raped - he will want to get as close to the limits as he can - or he will do substandard work to squeeze into my pocket - both are very bad! Sometimes though I only go on recommendations from others. people who I trust and have worked with before. So, for example, now I am working on a biggy, a major alteration to the way that Dolphin works. The coding has been specced out as per the guidelines above.
I hope this helps you get closer to your goals. ;) |

@freakpower, sure thing, and i was not singling out any specific country on this matter. Though my consideration is this, those who have spent money on an education, and take pride in their work, and actually do this type of work for a living and are not fly-by-night, here today, gone tomorrow types of folks, present both here on unity and the freelancers sites.
the mention of a decent price is what i was referring to. a skilled person with specific qualities has to set a standard for the fair market value of their time and efforts. understandably, outside the US, the economy is different, specifically considering India, and their currencies, then the exchange is considerably substantial. though "cheap" is not what was referred to here, it was stated "a decent price" my inquiry was what is being considered a decent price?
if a task takes 15 minutes then charging $60.00/hour USD, then equally, the price should reflect the actual time consumption, and not the per hour rate. however, when there is a scope of work, and that scope of work involves an amount of time that would limit that programmers ability to take on more tasks, then that specific task is the one that has to pay 100% of the bills, since it would limit the actual income.
I have been dealing with project management for a number of years, and the experience we have had, is that a programmer that bids by the hour solely, most likely has not idea how to bid a scope of work, therefore the proprietor ends up spending 3 - 5x more the cost, though it appeared initially that he was getting cheaper work.
at any rate, there was really nothing to disagree with here. my inquiry was not answered, when asked about what is a decent price. and most oft, what is decent in India, is considered ludicrous in the US, I do not know a programmer in the US or Canada, that is working for $15.00/hour, not legitimately anyhow. Specifically considering the US, a company who is internet based, must pay taxes on the income, so $15.00/hour ends up being about $2.00/hour when all things are deducted. so all things considered, good luck finding "a decent price" though that is undefined. When a GIG is not enough --> Terabyte Dolphin Technical Support - Server Management and Support |
