Can you help me with this error?

I can access every page of my website, including the Admin section, but I cannot view the Home Page!  Everything was working just fine and then all of a sudden I get this message when typing my website address:

"Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' in /home/freepers/public_html/index.php on line 84"

I haven't made any changes to the site in months, so I don't understand how this happened, or how to fix it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Also, I noticed that if I delete the entire line 84, then the homepage works fine, but my Google ads at the bottom of the page are not working properly...

The standard issue index.php has 83 lines.  I'm not sure how that code got in your index.php file, but it's definitely in the wrong place.

Who put that code in index.php?

It's within the pagecode function which can't have html tags.  It's encrypted so you really can't tell what the code does.  If the site owner doesn't know how it got there, that's not a good sign.  Whatever the code's intended purpose, it's not going to work (obviously) and maybe that's a good thing.

I've deleted the bad code (which I did not put in).  So now the website views and works normal, with the exception of the Google ads at the bottom of the home page.  They just say "Classifieds Index PHP", which is definitely weird.  All of my other pages show normal Google Ads, even though the code from Google is only entered once in my site's Admin...

Any suggestions or insights?

Which file did you modify to remove the code as www.freepersonalclassifieds.com/ is looking at a different file to www.freepersonalclassifieds/com/index.php.  www.freepersonalclassifieds/com/index.php displays your google ads correctly as it is generated dynamically from your admin banner section. If also displays your Gold members correctly at the top of your website. However www.freepersonalclassifieds.com/ does not show either the google ads or your gold members correctly. In fact, in the place of your gold members it shows somethings rather odd and unrelated to your site in my browser. What does the line beginning with DirectoryIndex in your .htaccess file display? This should be in the root of www.freepersonalclassifieds.com/

Since removing the bad code, it appears that Google has adapted to correctly display ads now.  My server can restore from backup files, but they are recommending I download or install any available security patches or updated Dolphin versions.  (I have version 6.1.1)  Should I update my version of Dolphin?  If I do, will it affect any custom changes that I made to the current version, like my Zip Code search engine, background colors, ads, etc?

I'm afraid to mess up something that I spent so much time getting right...

Definately upgrade to a version greater than 6.1.4. If you upgrade to 6.1.4 there are some manual coding changes you have to apply to secure the version, however I suspect that this fix has been applied or the issue has been properly addressed in 6.1.5 and 6.1.6. I recommend 6.1.6 and you should apply it as soon as possible. Remember to back up first. I am not sure of the upgrade path you need to take from the current version you are on. You may have to do a little digging around for that info.

I would recommend that you copy your entire site to a test site and try upgrades on the test site before you make any changes on a live site.

Below is the legacy version of the Boonex site, maintained for Dolphin.Pro 7.x support.
