Can Arvixe really handle small Dolphin Communities?

Hello

I have been having non-stop issues with Arvixe in the last few weeks and although they send me messages saying it is their lizard server having issues and not my account, they have now suspended my site.  Their alternative:  Upgrade to Business Class which judging by a google search to the same issues I have been happening and which is the general response from Arvixe.  I had referred a friend to Arvixe to host his dolphin communities as I had no problems until recently but even he is having issues and has received notification that it is a problem with the lizard server and not with his account.  His account is now being transferred to a new server.  My dolphin site suddenly spiking in mysql, memory and cpu usage even though there were max 3/20 processes'.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled dolphin thinking that would correct the problem and I received the exact same errors.  I've received word that my username and password had been changed in the cpanel and found this to be the case on my dolphin site as well.  I received an email from them a few days ago saying they were having issues on the server and it was no fault of mine:

Hello,

We will continue to monitor this server for issues as we have encountered a few issues that we have been working on recently.

Arvixe, LLC

Their customer support girish said this in an earlier chat help log today:

09:17Girish Gopalakrishnan: 2.93% CPU usage constantly and 6.03% Memory usage 6.3% mysql process usage

My site has only 100 people in it, I don't use the chat, video or sound, have no rms because it went down on their end as I was hosting that with them too.  The solution to upgrade to business class is dumb in my opinion since my site has not grown in the last few years that I've been hosting with Arvixe.  Considering another client on the same server was also told this was a server issue and he would move the account, I feel like I am just getting the run around because I'm not a programmer.  My friend, whom is a programmer, runs 7 dolphin communities and has not had problem with his sites until recently as well, looked over my settings and cannot see where the problem lies.  So yeah I'm looking for good affordable hosting with no run around and no mighty buck controlling how their customer service deals with it's own clients.  I was very happy with Arvixe but I am not so happy now.  My site is down and their solution is to upgrade or not put my site back online.  Not fair.  No help.  One tech support says it's their problem and another blames me but has no solutions which I haven't already tried and that of other programmers.  I think if Arvixe cannot handle dolphin sites like it's stated they do here, then I would suggest they remove their false advertising and warn clients who may be considering giving them the money.  And before any Arvixe person asks my username is bewytch and my account address ishttp://www.iambewytched.com

Can anyone suggest a good host for a beginner dolphin site?  I am now considering VPS but since Arvixe is more expensive and doesn't seem to have the better business bureau records to back it up, I will be looking elsewhere.

I had the same problem. I would advise you to go to terabyte-hosting.com. I am on a service agreement with dolphin-techs.com. They are quick to respond and very knowledgeable. They have been a big help in taming the dolphin.

I'm waiting on my few months to be over and moving what is left there to my main server I had for years. What was I thinking with going to Arvixe? Oh it was recommended here..

Here is the latest letter to me from them for a website that has no activity except for me and spammers..

New members, run from Arvixe!

Dear Michael Newton,

We have been monitoring your account's resource usage on the server in the past 7 days. Out of the 7 days, your account showed usage above regular levels a total of 6 days. We wanted to bring this to your attention as we will need your correspondence and cooperation if such usage by you is regular. With this in mind, please find your average resource usage in the past few days in the table below. We have highlighted specific instances of higher resource abuse in red:
Day CPU % Memory % MySQL Processes
May 21st 0.40 0.22 1.5
May 20th 0.43 0.25 1.7
May 19th 0.43 0.28 1.6
May 18th 0.43 0.26 1.4
May 17th 0.37 0.23 1.5
May 16th 0.44 0.25 1.5
May 15th 0.34 0.18 1.1

The limits of excessive usage for each resource are:

CPU %: 0.0-8.0 is Moderate, 15.0 is High, higher than 15.0 is Unacceptable. This is the average percentage of the entire server's CPU used by your account. This is of all processors combined.
Memory %: 0.0-1 is Moderate, 2.0 is High, higher than 5.0 is Unacceptable. This is the average percentage of the entire server's Memory used by your account in that day.
MySQL Usage: 0.0-0.5 is Moderate, 1.0 is High, higher than 1.0 is Unacceptable. This is the average number of Mysql instances you were running at all specific seconds of that day.

More often than not, single spikes in usage are attributed to abuse by your visitors, resource-exhaustive web platforms, or plugins of those platforms.

To assist you to isolate the source of usage, we have identified your top processes with highest usage in the past 7 days. They are:
Date % CPU Process
May 21st 29.0 /usr/bin/php -q /home/newton27/public_html/periodic/cron.php

However, if such usage is typical for your site, we believe that this type of usage is against our Acceptable Use Policy. Therefore, we need your cooperation in finding a remedy. Depending on your specific case, we generally recommend one or more of the following solutions:
  • If you have many sites hosted on one account: Split the sites throughout more accounts
  • Upgrade your account to our BusinessClass
  • Upgrade your account to our VPSClass
  • Upgrade your account to our DedicatedClass
  • Turn off extra plugins/modules/additions to your sites that may be out-dated or are easily abused by your visitors

Do note that we employ some of the best servers in the shared web hosting industry and we have identified your site(s), if the above usage is typical of your site, as using too many resources to reside on a regular shared web hosting server. For your convenience, we strongly suggest that if looking away from Arvixe for web hosting that you look for solutions that are a clear upgrade to a regular shared web hosting environment.

Important: Please respond to this email with a course of action or a remedy within the next 24 hours. Repeated excessive usage as described by the outlines above may result in a suspension of your account.

Thank you for your attention and understanding,

and this was just from spammer activity.. www.webcamyourface.com is popular for spamming I guess..I had to do a redirect to another site temporally.

I am moving the site today.

So if this site had no active members, just guest and browsing.. Imagine how your site would do it it truly was "active" with actual members. I have learned the hard lesson of shared hosting.

There are some members here LOLing right now at me for good reasons.. right?

Moving on, AGAIN..

Not right. We work with hosting providers and the onces we recommend have been most cooperative in setting up an optimised Dolphin environment. You dont' hear that too often but most of the clients are actually quite happy with them and still we track the feedback.

What I see is a price position of Arvixe - they choose what kind of load they're willing to sell for the amount of money you pay. There're other options with different pricing too. We only try to ensure that the packages offerend coply with Dolphin technical requirements and our recommendations.

As for lining up pockets - I would say that Arvixe offers a lot less than many other hosting providers in per-sale commissions, but for whatever reason many people choose them.

Well, if you need "official" position - it's there on the Hosting page. We do recommend them and we work with them on improving their environment. About the only problem we're hearing is that Arvixe is quite aggressive at upselling more expensive accounts, which is their monetary policy and every other hosting does that at some point. That point is always the mesure that affects opinions. AlexE voiced his opinion.

They do not.. Andrew, your blogs about server tuning made all the difference for my dedicated server speed performance.

Looking at the php info setting for the server, memory settings are not even close to what you talk about here. http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/HostingServerSetupRecommendations

And particularly to the MySQL section, there server setting are not set like this. (Arvixe)

So how can the sites ever really run correct if the servers are incorrectly configured?

and...... How can they offer a shared host package for Dolphin, and say get up and running quickly with RMS and Dolphin pre installed think no one would use the sites but for testing?!

The  "more info" link they send you to read up on for shared host..this is from the bottom very bottom left of page. Very tiny "Acceptable Use Policy", This is not in shown in the package deal

The author of the topic asked at the end of her post for a new hosting provider. And if I moderated one post, I'd have to moderate them all. I've been very lenient on the mentioning of other hosting companies in the forums.

where it may not be spam, it is surely spam-like. since you have 10 posts, and each one offers no answers, other than a reference to the hosting service.

I don't think this is SPAMing. I have mentioned in the places only where it is demanded. Placing the link makes it look like SPAM or just the name itself look like SPAM ? I can correct myself.

so its as if you are trolling, or being directed or instructed to post on x thread, and your post is always the same, and seldom varies. you also mention that you have 50K users in one of your posts, I'm gonna call BS on that one.

its also odd that your name is Praveen, which is the same name of the individual who purportedly runs the hosting services?

so yes, unless you are going to show how out of your 10 posts, that if this were your board, you wouldnt consider this to be spam, then by all means, this is considered spam-like behavior.

I thought the rules were one account per member to prevent people like Technoman who had 18 accounts and used them all to neg rep all my posts and all of the peoples posts who replied to my post in a positive manor.

If there was a post with a signature then it would appear that the owner of the signature made a mistake signing his post in his true name. and therefore having 2 account to promote his/her hosting company.

As to Arvixe and their up-selling, i believe it is linked to pure greed on the part of boonex. When i was joint owner of terabyte-hosting.com with John. Boonex demanded $100 commission and i believe 20% per year of the hosting package fees indefinitely that the referral person chose. As i remember talking to John about it, it worked out that in most cases it was 3 years worth of the hosting payment we got from the customer before we would make any money. with all the outgoing costs for servers and Boonex sending demands i had a talk to victorT about it,  all he did was drop the 20% to 10% for either 3 or 5 years.

Due to my failing health and the income from the non-boonex referred customers, it was not enough to even support one of use let alone both of us, and john had family to support too. So i gave John my 50% of terabyte-hosting.com and backed off from to much stress and over working. I would help John out from time to time when he needed some help.

I believe Boonex are recommending hosts that do not really support Dolphin on their shared servers, and the hosts press the customer hard to upgrade to a costly package. Just because the shared servers pass the boonex recommended server setup, does not mean the hosting packages are fit for purpose on those servers.

In my view, Boonex had opt-ed for the quick cash from the major hosting companies and forced the actual best hosts run by dolphin users who knew Dolphin, and servers, Even their technical demands made things difficult for shared server hosting, so much so that terabyte-hosting.com no-longer offers shared server hosting.

It is a real shame that you can not trust boonex on even their recommended hosting providers, as they are just giving cheap server tested by boonex, hosting to get you in the door, then hit you with demands to upgrade or we terminate your account because boonex don't check the limits on the hosting packages that are NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE and the hosting company do not post anywhere on their site the very low limits they have setup to get you to upgrade as soon as possible.

Hostgator, not even passes any of the technical requirement and selling shared hosting packages for dolphin at $7.95 a month. for you to discover you need to upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server for $139 a month.

Boonex don't have "your" the people that make this community  interests at heart. otherwise they would put ads for the small dedicated dolphin users and their small hosting companies on the hosting page for a reasonable referral fee, and not treat them like the multi million dollar hosting companies who can afford to delete accounts they can't sell upgrades too. These small dedicated dolphin users that have built the perfect hosting packages and server setups for Dolphin give their kind efforts to help this community for free, because they are small and have time to help and don't have bosses pushing for target company incomes and bonuses for their staff for selling upgrades.

this will most likely be hidden or deleted and i get banned again lmao. oh well its worth a year or two ban just to say my piece.

Arvixe has gotten to big to worry about the little guy. I use Nexhosting, www.nexhosting.ca  is the best company for Boonex hosting. At $3.88 per month which includes unlimited band with and disk space and 100% up time, you can't go wrong.  What I live about them is they deal with boonex related problems and if their is a problem, they work with you to try and resolve that problem.

They will not just suspend your account because their is a issue, but they will contact you and help you to resolve it. They also offer VPS hosting for only $7.88 per month.
