CPU overload!! 7.0.9

Hello all. Firstly; yes I did check the forums about this issue but I found nothing conclusive.

Issue: I have a site that is 6-years old and the last upgrade I made was 7.0.9. I'm hosted with Hostforweb and have constantly had to deal with support about my site overloading servers. With the growth of the site and multiple suspensions I have upgraded from a shared to multiple levels of VPS. Now i'm on a  managed cloud server with {4/3.6Ghz processors and 4096MB of RAM} but I still manage to overload the server and use 100% of CPU.

I read that the issue is the xml.php but nothing I have read so far offered a fix. I only ever have 10-15 member logged in at any given time, also i have china blocked, all of the messenger mods removed ( I need them) and chat. I don't want to upgrade to 7.1 unless I have to. I have everything the way my members like it.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

it could be unnecessary processes running non-stop on your server ... this can suddenly happen too!

Ask host to check this for you ... Just an idea but I have seen this problem eating CPU many times ...

They never tell me what uses up the resources, just that I have overloaded the Node, CPU or RAM after I bitch to them about my most recent suspension. I came to the forum to see if anyone else had this issue and if they were able to resolve it. It seems to spike when I have more than 15 members on at the same time.

I always recommend and use dedicated servers ... maybe your set-up there is not good enough and it's time to upgrade?!

I'm thinking a dedicated server might not handle the scrip if I had 50 members on at the same time.

are you kidding ... I have a dedi server and it powers a super active network which gets  thousands of unique visitors daily including members multi-tasking different features non-stop all day long!

it also powers other dolphin set-ups I have and all activities including 30 other domains / websites

If you get the right dedicated server and it's optimized right it will easily handle your site without even blinking an eye!

mine don't ...

This is what you have to understand, you don't know how many over VPSes are on that same box. With a dedicated server, you know exactly what you have.  Even a low end server, in my opinion, is better than guessing at what you really have.

Post what you are paying for your VPS and we can do some cost comparisons for you on a dedicated server.

cloud server with {4/3.6Ghz processors and 4096MB of RAM}

That's one of the problems. In my opinion, cloud servers are not properly configured. And i see this with a lot of company's cloud systems. They just don't match real world, real servers configuration norms. A CPU can't function at peak performance if it does not have the shoulder room.

Rule of thumb. 2Gig of memory per cpu core at least. A 4 core machine should have a min of 8 gig of memory. Memory helps more than most people think.

I would recommend you switch to a dedicated. Clouds do not perform as well as many think. I have been on a cloud before. Not as good as my dedicated.

You can get a dedicated from Zarconia that will out perform that cloud for less money. Check out their Z800. It's a quad core server with twice the memory for less money.

And if you want real power, look at the ZX1000, ZX2000 or ZX3000.

What about private, home server?

What about private, home server?

Most home internet connections just do not have the bandwidth to host a server. And most providers of home internet service block many ports such as port 25 required for email to work. Not suitable to be used as a live server. Can be used for a test box, but will not perform well for a larger site.

Thanks deano. I'll look into that option.

Judging by the replies it might be time to man-up and get a dedicated server. Thanks.

So, to beat this horse just a bit longer. Can anything be done to the xml.php? I ask because my thinking is if your site grows so will this issue.

There are no known cures. Making sure the server is properly optimized. http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/HostingServerSetupRecommendations

Making sure the buggy phpids is shut off. The following is how to shut it off and should be off by default on your version of dolphin.

Navigate to your Admin Panel>Settings> Advanced Settings> Other

replace the current impact level values to a -1  (negative 1) for both of the following

1) Total security impact threshold to send report: (This is the impact level defined to trigger an email sent to you)

2) Total security impact threshold to send report and block aggressor: (This is the impact level defined to trigger an email AND block access to your website)

The rest of the issues i could find are already part of dolphin 7.0.9 unless you have some older files that did not get upgraded.

Thanks Deano. I followed The guide and started with a page speed of 28 mobile / 43 desktop. After tweaking to match my server I'm now at a 72 mobile / 89 desktop page speed. That should do very well now. I also got rid of video chat and messenger but kept simple messenger. kind of redundant on my part to have all of them installed and running.

Thanks again.

I do not totally agree with you deano92964.

I've tried arvixe and canceled it due to the fact that page load time almost doubled in compare to my own server.

(I have tested both mine and arvixe from other location just to overcome the same = home LAN problem when testing my server.)

My site  size is aprox. 70GB in content and still growing. Luckly I do not have very busy site - haven't seen more then 15 users online at the same time. I don't know what would happen if that change ( more users on-line )

I have to be honest - my plan at arvixe was shared hosting....

Mayki

$99 @ Hostforweb / managed cloud vps

I am using host for web $39.99 VPS. I want to upgrade to the $99 one. Does the $99 dollar one work good for video comments, streaming, uploading 500mb videos, etc.?

I said most. Not all. You just got lucky with your own bandwidth. Or unlucky you choose arvixe. What ever way you look at it. I would run one at home also. But i cannot get the bandwidth i need where i am, and port 25 is blocked which i also need.
