Boonex Avatar Module - What does it do?

Hi Folks, I'm interested in the Avatar module, but can't find anything about it. It's the only module NOT installed on the demo site and when I install it, nothing happens.

The only setting I can find is the ability to adjust JPG compression and that's it. When I go to the site, there's nothing different.

If anyone has this module running, is it worth it and can you tell me how to implement it? I'm using the profile photos block and my avatars have a horrible white box underneath. Until now I've been unsuccessful in removing it, although the Profiles block in Pages Builder/Profile looks like where I should be.

The avatar module allows your members to have an avatar image for the thumbs on the site outside of the profile photos albums.  My members like the avatar module.

You can use it for Avatars by going to:

Admin Panel > Settings > Advanced Settings > Profiles >
Member Thumb = Avatar
Member Thumb Icon = Avatar Icon

Hi. I've enabled the avatars as described by AlexT, but when I edit my profile the "Manage Avatars" is empty.

How do I setup the avatar's for profiles?

Thanks for responding folks.

@Geek-Girl, your description helped a lot.

@AlexT, thanks for the directions. I did eventually figure them out, but in my case I could hardly see the value. I think my users will be happy with a profile photo/avatar.

I can see that some users would prefer to regularly change profile photos and/or avatars, but I'm trying to keep my site as simple as possible from a user's point of view.

@micoots. AlexT, instructions are pretty much it.

You install the module, then go to:

Admin Panel > Settings > Advanced Settings > Profiles >  then to
Member Thumb and change it to - Avatar   then to
Member Thumb Icon and change it to Avatar Icon.

My avatars disappeared, so I had to load them again. Mine is a test site and it was easy. You then get the simple crop facility and a choice of 100 cartoon like avatars

If you can live without separate avatars and profile pics, I'm suggesting the module is of little use. I'm removing it because I "can" live without it.

Thanks all.

Hi Demmy. I changed the Member Thumb and Member Thumb icon, which made my profile avatar go to the letter "M", but where do I then set the Avatar for my profile?

I've been hunting around the profile pages and can't find where to set the Avatar or see the cartoon like ones?

Thanks.

Hi AlexT,

I've removed the module for the seasons stated. I'll try to do this form memory but I can't guarantee I'll get it right. Plus I only used it once.

Sorry if I'm repeating things here:

Install the Module

Go to Settings/Advanced Settings/Profiles

2nd last item, Member Thumb = Avatar

last item Member Thumb Icon = Avatar Icon

Save

Go back to site

Got to Photos

Click + button on white (?) bar above the montage.

You should be in the  "Upload Photos" dialog.

Click "Create New Album and choose Avatars from the dropdown list

Click Continue

Select an avatar file from your hard disk and click open.

Click Submit

Click the downloaded image

Click Select as Avatar in the Actions box on the right.

You are now at the Avatar selection screen where you can choose the image and/or the cartoons.

Crop the image

Click Add Avatar

On the next screen, if you have more than one Avatar, click the green tick and it will move to the next.

Alternatively click one of the cartoons.

I find it all too confusing and keep in mind this is only for the tiny avatar thumb.

Profile photos are something different again.

The whole thing reminds me of my mobile phone with 100,000 options. All I use is the phone, time and alarm!

I think the KISS equation is very appropriate here, but as Geek-Girl said, her members like the avatar/profile pic option.

Keep in mind, if you don't tell your members, they'll never ever know.

Hope that helps, but there's no huge difference here, just different pics for the avatar and the profile.

Hi Demmy. I really thank you for detailed step-by-step guide.

For me though, step 3 here:

Click + button on white (?) bar above the montage.

You should be in the  "Upload Photos" dialog.

Click "Create New Album and choose Avatars from the dropdown list

doesn't work as an Avatars album doesn't exist.

You're right though, it's very hard to find. I had to look over AlexT's response a couple of times and the option is under "Account Home -> Avatar".

I'm wondering how difficult this would be to find for new users on the system. Does the sign-up process force people or allow them to choose an avatar on sign-up?

If not, it's easier to turn it off by default or create another side menu with all these "hidden options" easily accessible.

Thank you for your assistance nevertheless.
