Blocking ~username

Hello,

Is it possible to block all ~username urls in the .htaccess file or another way in a shared hosting situation?

Thanks,

Cory

That is a lot of good information.  :-)

So here is more background information.

My domain is http://smack.com

I am on a shared hosting platform.  (This will change, but not this month)

The problem I had is someone else on my shared platform created a mirror page of my site.  They placed it in the root of the hosting site they have on the same server.

So when they went to http://smack.com/~username/dir/phishing.html

It worked.  This is just the way the ~username var works it seems.  I did read the message about blocking domains, but that seems to be targeted at login email domains.

What I would like to do is figure out a way to block any URL on my site like the following.

http://smack.com/~username

http://smack.com/~JohnBoysPizza

http://smack.com/~RemaxGuy

http://smack.com/~Yaddayadda

The key point I am looking to figure out is.

Can I block any directory or url off of my main domain that starts with a ~?

(I got the site banned, and removed from my hosting environment but I wasted about 3 hours of my time dealing with it and the google phishing alerts.)

Thanks,

Cory

Not possible. Your host has userdirs enabled on the server. ~user

Apache is handling the redirect before it gets to your site to process the .htaccess file. So your not going to be able to catch the ~ in there. As far as i know, you can't stop that.

Got it!  That is exactly what I was trying to figure out.  Thank you for the info.  I will try to get moved to a VPS sooner.
