Some are wondering why I removed Boonex Beta8 from testing. Let me explain the reasons why:
- Once installed, I tried to upload a profile photo using the flash loader. I got an error of "File too big". Seemed no matter what I tried to upload with it, the file was too big. @Victor, you stated this has been fixed. Can you please tell me how to fix it?
- My host is pre-configured for 200MB uploads. When checking the phpinfo from the original install, it said 2MB. My 6.1.4 version has no issues at all. The beta is installed in a sub-directory off the main dolphin (ex. www.mysite.com/beta)
- When trying to use the "regular" upload, small video files would upload fine (under 2MB). I added a php.ini file to the root of the beta and the phpinfo in the administration area (Host Tools) STILL said I only had 2MB upload. SO I also placed the php.ini file in the root of the adminstration folder and finally got it to say 200MB uploads. However, I could still not upload nothing over 2MB. Music and Videos would all just sit there and load (spinning circle forever, until you navigated to another page) with none of them actually uploading.
- When I tried to embed a youtube video, I selected all the needed fields and clicked submit. The page seemed to refresh but nothing happened. there was NO indication of an error. Since the title, desc. etc., is brought directly from youtube, I decide that MAYBE there was a character limit in one of the fields. After fooling around, I removed the description (which was quite long) and typed one of my own and IT WORKED. Unfortunately as stated previously, There was NO indication of an error.
So after the headaches of not even being able to add content to the site, I removed it. I tried to put Beta7 back on and it started giving me problems too (possibly something cached on my web host). So I removed it all.
Please note: Beta 7 worked just fine on the first try. I installed the Beta8 on 3 different occasions (removing Beta7), using different folders and different databases. Completely clean.
I will be more than happy to install this again once I can get some type of resolution to these issues. But if I cannot even add content to the site using the uploaders, there is no sense at the moment since that is what most members do.
Thanks,
Chris

Bumping for Victor and/or other developers to help me out. Nothing to see here |
I understand why you are removing beta 8, but out of curiosity why are you going to keep working with beta 7? Are you going to try to upgrade the work you did to the RC? Bunch of issues with that - the avatars, etc - and as you know Boonex is providing zero help.
p.s. By the way, I have never seen Victor here - have you? That could always change but he always tells us to post here, but then never comes here himself. As you know, he criticized me for referencing the problems with your install, but mine didn't work at all. The software no longer works with php 4.2 so my install was trashed by their new "security" and they didn't bother telling us.

Hey Caltrade, I did try to reload Beta7 back on but it seemed to inherit some issues from the Beta* (uploads not working). Now this may be due to possibly some cached info on my web host, but actually Beta 7 was working great for me previously.
I am not giving up on Dolphin just yet, I have too much money and time invested in modules and stuff that I plan on using in the new release.
I would like to see some resolutions on the issues I posted so that I can put Beta8 back on. If I can get everything up and running, YES I do plan on doing the whole upgrade process to RC. Alot of the mods I purchased/have are already built into D7 (kinda pisses me off to buy for 6.1.4, but ok) such as privacy enhancements, photo/video albums, etc. There is only one mod I plan on taking to D7, and that's my Game Zone. I promised the members that I would not upgrade until that mod is ready. They love it :)
I not trying to be a hard ass here, but I have successfully installed Dolphin MANY times. To have one give me trouble right after the install is a but aggravating.
We shall see....

Thanks Chris, I am rather disgusted with Boonex at the moment as I now think they are being extremely disrespectful to their members. Their stubbornness in refusing to provide even minimal help on upgrading between betas now borders on rudeness. I hope you and the others here who are trying to salvage there work between betas can share information here. Do you think you will be able to upgrade from B7 to the RC - or do you think you will have to upgrade to B8 at some point?

Actually Rob, I believe you will not be able to upgrade ANY beta to the RC version. You could possibly does this manually, but would be a pain in the assholio. I'm will not migrate my site to a beta then to a RC :)
What I "plan" to do is once I see that D7 is performing properly (especially the migration tool), I am going to run the upgrade packages for 6.1.4 to 6.1.5, then run 6.1.5 to 6.1.6 back to back. This will break all of my mods more than likely but if the migration tool works, then at least the profiles, photos, videos, etc. will migrate to D7 and all I have to do is install 1 mod.
Hopefully, Since Victor has asked that I be more specific on "too many issues", I am hoping that someone will come along and tell me what to do to resolve it.

Chris,
In my experience "configuring" one of these betas takes about two weeks - with all sets of profile fields, language keys, membership levels, and the dozens of things we need to do to make it work properly. Until recently, that has been about the same amount of time between beta released, so just as we are finishing the configuration, it is time to destroy everything and start all over again.
I was not necessarily talking about upgrading to the RC - though that would be nice, I was talking about "salvaging" as much of this configuration as I can. Some can probably be done with table restores, but this has caused problems for me in the past- restoring a profile fields table caused the join form to fail. I have a small test community in B7 and would love to save their pics - but the new avatar approach makes this very difficult - especially with Boonex refusing to help.
I understand your situation now and it is different. It is really unfortunate that you will be forced to "break" your system to make this work - sounds like a risky move. I also understand why you were trying to encourage Boonex to provide an upgrade from 6.1.4. - I think many - probably most, members here are in the same boat.
Boonex should really provide some kind of "webmaster liaison" here - they have no idea what we are going through.

Good conversation, good questions. I agree with you in all. But again without participation boonex. And so it would be desirable to hear their opinion... |

Hi, Rob. It was said many many times that there is no updates between betas will be provided. I am sure you are aware of it very well. Then why you are waiting for it ? Why you are asking us to provide it as it was like we promised to do this ?
This is not ready product yet.. and we do not provide any upgrades for it and any other thing which is related to the ready product.
PS: there is no upgrades between betas, version upgrades will be available since RC
PPS: there is no upgrades between betas, version upgrades will be available since RC

Well you did promise to have the release candidate out last Friday, since that promise was broken, I thought Boonex might at least take it under consideration - and you guys did disappear from this forum for almost two weeks you know. Things might have changed. Just out of curiosity, why should people install and test this beta at all? That is not a baited question, I really want to know. I mean, if we do any configuring at all, we will just have to destroy our work and start all over again right? If we start a small test community, we will just have to destroy their profiles and hope they will help us next time (they probably won't). I don't know why you feel the need to be rude by repeating "there is no upgrades between betas, version upgrades will be available since RC". We get it - you won't provide any help or support for this community with upgrading to the next beta - all you will do is occasionally write some tickets for posts that happen to be at the top of this forum. So why should we help with more testing? Is there anything in it for us? Can you at least tell us when this RC will be available?

I am fairly new here, although I have been lurking for a while now, and I have to say that it seems to be that there is a very adversarial relationship between BOONEX and their customers. This is rather alarming to me considering 1. this is called UNITY, doesn't seem to be much of that going around. 2. How do you expect to run a business when you are treating your beta testers, webmasters, paying customers and those who put all their faith in Dolphin to try and make it in this down economy as if we are annoying you? We have, in my humble opinion legitimate questions. You have broken promises which I have seen you refuse to address over and over again. So here is my advice, not that anyone asked.
Take a deep breath, realize that we all have bad runs, but at the end of the day we are all working towards the same goal, making Dolphin as successful as possible. Isn't that everyone's goal here? If it isn't then speak now or forever hold your peace. Bueller?? Anyone?? Bueller?? Didn't think so...
I know this post will do ZERO good but I had to get it off my chest. Why? Because I know I have a long hard road ahead of me and I figure it would be easier with some people by my side as opposed to a bunch of bickering going on where I look to for help. NO GROUP HUGS!!!! BUT I could use a bottle of whiskey, and a Xanax so I am going to take care of that need, or maybe it's just an overwhelming desire...Eh Who cares.
I'll sit back and prepare to get flamed by Boonex for not contributing to the issue and flamed by Joe Q. Public because it's been said before and here I am saying it again....I know this so please don't bother, it would only be you telling me that I am wasting my breath as you waste your breath telling me how I'm wasting my....Oh you get the idea....
Dos, Cal, Houston gotta say thanks to you all I have learned much much more than you know from the three of you especially, so THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and since PPPPPS There is no yadda yadda
Could you tell us Alex when will the RC "really" be out? Or at least a ball park so if you miss it we won't get all pissy....I'll beg although it would be sadly inappropriate.

Thanks for that vote of confidence Chance. I don't think we were being unreasonable at all, and I am truly disappointed that Boonex now seems to be taking an adversarial relationship with their most loyal members - especially those who have stuck with them for all seven betas and installed and tested each one for them. It looks like they are already pulling the plug on beta 8 - or if not pulling the plug recommending that people no longer test it on their local servers without updating your install with a revision- Alex just put this on his blog. Might be a good idea to wait a day or to for the dust to settle.

Hello Zarcon!
As AlexT said trouble was fixed (see details in ticket 13115). Reason was in function return_bytes from inc/utils.inc.php. Need to replace old function with new one:
function return_bytes($val) { $val = trim($val); $last = strtolower($val{strlen($val)-1}); $val = (int)$val; switch($last) { // The 'G' modifier is available since PHP 5.1.0 case 'k': $val *= 1024; break; case 'm': $val *= 1024 * 1024; break; case 'g': $val *= 1024 * 1024 * 1024; break; } return $val; }
About max sizes issues - one possible reason could be in previous function. Try now.
About embed video - it works fine in demozz.com/dolphin7b sites without any additional setup. In upload form there is no limits for input fields so it could not be reason of error. Try to upload the same file to mentioned demozzz.com site.

Thank you to everyone, I will be testing this after work to see how it goes this time. I am crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

We appreciate efforts of all our client very much, but Caltrade is really annoying with the one question, when he knows the answer very well. More over he discourages other people to participate in the common effort of testing and bug reporting.
Sorry, but the post was addressed to Clatrade, to remind him about this obvious answer once again.
Regarding RC: keep an eye on trac, when it is small number if open tickets (~10), we are about RC.

Alex, I am sorry this is "annoying" you - I made that comment on October 29th - more than a week ago. Are you just noticing it now? We are told to post our issues here, not on the blogs, but then Boonex staff seldom participates here. As others have noticed, it often difficult to get even serious issues into Trac - you sometimes have to "bump" them multiple times and then hope they are near the top of this forum when Boonex staff intermittently shows up.
We were told on the official Boonex blog in November of 2008 - almost exactly a year ago, that D7 would be ready "in a couple of weeks". Whether you think they should have or not, people made decisions from believing some of the information that was put out - we didn't know there would be nearly 20 alphas and more that 8 betas. I have installed all of them - some multiple times, and have discovered many serious issues for you - the broken multiple page join form, the broken database restore function, the broken multiple select checkbox form - and more. There was absolutely no advantage to me - or anyone else here who has helped you test the beta - none. People who just kicked back and did nothing will be in the exact same position as us when the RC comes out.
Boonex has made it very clear that they won't do anything at all to help or support who help test the beta - we get it. I have not made any issue of this again since I posted this over a week ago and don't intend to again except to address your comment. Waiting a full year, and then installing, configuring, and then having to destroy the work we did more than eight times was also "annoying".

Thanks for your response Alex, I do appreciate it. Just to clarify my post. I wasn't calling anyone out, I was speaking more to the overall feeling this community is taking on. I would just like to see it a little less confrontational and a little more collaborative. I have owned large internet communities in my younger years and know how hard it is to keep everything in check and know and realize that there will always be some confrontation no matter how hard you work. What I am trying to say is that with a little thought on everyone's part, cooling off before posting and some restraint on both sides it wouldn't take much to change the tone of the Unity community.
