Be honest,, how many hits can your server take?

Ok we do this every year and it always ends up in a fight,,  I'm just curious what server you have and how many real daily hits... I'll go first,  I have my bigget on a i7 with 32 gigs of ram,, it gets around 20 to 30 thousand hits a day,, hardly ever less than 100 in chat now at the slowest,, and 250 average.

it runs smooth as can be,, never even gets to 5 percent of the sever usage.

now i did have my rangerschat site getting 500 joins in a hour on the same server, and when more than 20 people join at a single time i notice not matter what you do it bogs down like crazy!

What do you mean by "hit"? Visit, visitor, pageview, request?

 I was trying to ask what do you mean by "20 to 30 thousand hits a day"? The term "hit" is often used for describing different things. If it's 30K unique visitors a day and 100 concurrent users in chat (assuming some are engaging in a/v chats), then the box is doing great job managing this. It would be interesting to know how many CPU cores it's running?

More and more I see the trend of a simple "rule of thumb" happening - the $$ amount your pay for a box is about the same as the maximum number of online concurrent users it can handle. What's your observation?

4 cores,,, and 20 to 30 thousand page loads,, we have the groups with rayz group chats that are always used and stuff, we have the flashcoms,, that has been max out on user limit for a week, we just upped to unlimited yesterday, and before we upped the flashcoms to unlimited we was using the old style rayz main chat as an over flow room.. the site us very active,, i was just wondering cause i have seen people here with deds say they are maxing out with less than 100 same time users, but when i go to their sites they are empty

At 20-30K pageviews you'd be anywhere between 2-10K visitors (depending on PPV) and I think 4cores+32gb ram should naturally fare well with such load. If anyone's box is getting bogged down in such conditions, then it's due for optimisation. 

On the side note... the kind of traffic that you have is an interesting "milestone" of a relatively healthy niche community. Even with good SEO and some advertising this is pretty much as far as it will go unless it goes viral, so think about strategies for making your members introduce their friends to the site.

 I hope you're cashing in on that. I sold a site for four figures that was only getting a few hundred a day. At 20 to 30 thousand you should have advertisers beating your door down.

We used to get obsessed about it and at some point reached as high as 8, but it didn't convert into anything. Apparently  it hardly matters.

 lmfao!!..  since we bought the name monday and did the name change tuesday,, yeah low as to be expected i guess .. come see me in november ;)

  I can show you a site with a page rank of 5 right now that is a ghost town,, to hell with page rank it use to mean alot years ago,, where we are now,, offer the best, have the best,, and never ever ever EVER go down!.. and the other 99 percent is pure luck!

Funny you should say that...  3 emails last week pitching themselves to me. But I decided to wait for a while, and what I did was a fresh name and threw alot of money in expanding ever more,,, i.e. unlimited chat and camming options and rolled the dice one more time hoping it will pay off. and by that I hoping the forward of my last domains traffic and keywords will keep the fresh traffic to the site for long enough to see how the word of mouth snowballs this spring... I will focus totally on monetizing once I feel I am all set with the new name and such.

And why would page rank not matter now like it use to back years ago?
