Automatic insertion of affiliate links

Has anyone seen, does anyone know, of a tool, be it a module or standalone script that can be used to insert anchor text links into text content?

So, for example, one could have a list that specifies the following words: Andrew, Spain, Internet. etc. etc. When any of those words were used in an article, blog post, forum post etc the word would be converted into an anchor text link to a predefined URL.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

Did you just create that?

Cool

No forum link set up yet though. I notice phrases treat capital letters differently.

Might be an idea to cloak the affiliate URLs.

This is also great for setting up keyword links to other areas of the site.

Hey Modzzz, well done!

I took a look at the demo. It may be me, but when I added and activated the Boonex Articles module I was not able to get the links to show up. However, I am sure that's not an issue.

Can I make a couple of suggestions for functionality?

  • 1. Links should be style-able, for example, by colour (theme default or selected colour) or weight (bold/italic/normal/underline)
  • 2. Cloak the affiliate links - make cloaked links 'no follow' by default. Uncloaked links are usually internal anyway.
  • 3. Track and count the keyword clicks so you can optimize the keywords used for maximum performance. (or to use in paid campaigns)
  • 4. Use a unique key for links so that we can group links, this can show in the URL created. For example: Links to niche sites (or to a particular product) or for a particular campaign would have a unique key identifying them in the control panel, chosen by the administrator. This would then be used in the links created as follows: http://mydomain.net/uniquekey/ All links to the same URL would carry that unique key, possibly in conjunction with the keyword the user clicked on.
  • 5. Ability to define the number of times a link will be inserted on a page and a global limit for ALL created links on a page. For example, maximum 10 links on a page and 3 links for any particular keyword.
  • 6. Ability to define whether keywords should be case sensitive.
  • 7. Template headings and page furniture (image captions etc.) should not have links inserted, only text areas should carry links.
  • 8. The tool should not insert links into links (I don't know if yours has this flaw but when it happens it makes a right bloody mess of the page!)

Is this possible?

Thanks!

It does insert links into links, and as you say; makes a right mess. I tested it with a certain hashtag, as Modzzz has hashtags there.

At the moment it is case sensitive.

@dustybin - The mentioned requests (except #4) were implemented in the Affiliate Links module.
