Apache or Nginx?

I need a quick advice regarding hosting - I'm going with an unmanaged VPS plan. What should I install - Apache or Nginx?
I read a lot of good stuff about Nginx, however I feel like Dolphin is optimized for Apache.
What would you recommend? Where Dolphin 7.1 would run the fastest?
Thank you!

Dolphin runs fine on Nginx:

However some modules requires modifications in .htaccess file, but there is no .htaccess file in Nginx, so you will need to figure out by yourself on how to it in Nginx, or ask in forums.

Nginx hands down.  The big content delivery sites serving up on demand video are using Nginx so that should tell you things.  It is time that Apache was rewritten from the ground up and released as Apache 3 but I don't look for that to happen.

I am running Nginx and as for the .htaccess file you simply add anything needed to the rewrite rules config file.

Nginx is easy to set up and config.

I would be happy to guide you on this.  Nginx with PHP-FPM is a good configuration and there are plenty of guides to help you on installing the two.

Search my name for topics on me learning Nginx; I was pretty much on my own but those topics might help some.  And just ask and if I don't know, then google and bing does.

Hi, thanks for your reply!

I know that Dolphin runs on Nginx, the installation documentation provided here is very good and covers that topic.

The question is not whether or not Dolphin can run on Nginx, but rather - does it run BETTER on Nginx then on Apache?

It seems that Boonex guys did a whole bunch of optimizations specifically for Apache and although Netflix, Hulu and some parts of Facebook run on Nginx, this might not be applicable to Dolphin.

Geek_girl, have you by chance done a head to head comparison of the site performance on Nginx vs Apache?

Thanks again!

No, when I had the site on Apache, I was on a horrible VPS.  I am now running on a dedi.  No comparisons to give.  I have yet to install a PHP accelerator, which will help with speed as well.  My pages load fine but I have yet to test with a dial-in connection.

I've got Apache running with Zend Server CE as the accelerator and have seen a pretty big difference, however, I do have quite a bit of memory in the server, and that helps.

There are many people who can write computer programs, but there are very few computer programmers.

Apache and Nginx will do the same thing, serve up your site to the public.  Supposedly Nginx uses less resources and is faster at serving up the site.  I have no comparison data for my Dolphin site as far as Apache vs Nginx.

Nginx is very easy to set up although you will find few here on Boonex running Nginx.  People installing Nginx are usually those who are setting up an unmanaged server and choose to forgo installing Apache for a more cutting edge server.

"Apache is like Microsoft Word, it has a million options but you only need six. Nginx does those six things, and it does five of them 50 times faster than Apache."

Draxxon, you saw a big difference as compared to what? To Apache without accelerator? To Nginx?

Actually this tutorial for Nginx covers all the optimization for Apach

Below is the legacy version of the Boonex site, maintained for Dolphin.Pro 7.x support.
The new Dolphin solution is powered by UNA Community Management System.
