Adding dependent field city per State when hundreds exist

Good day!

Can anyone tell me if there is a module, programming, code editing or just "a way" to enter pre-defined or dependent field values without having to retype the entire list of items?

I added dependent field State for Country, and I am in the process of adding dependent field City for State that is chosen. However, as you can imagine, there are hundreds and hundreds of cities per state. When I look at Alaska, USA and Texas USA, we are talking hours and hours of time spent typing in the values for just those to U.S. States.

Please help if you can! I am stumped and overwhelmed at the task of entering each city per state into predefined/dependent value tables. Is there a simpler option? Module? Would I need to pay a programmer?

Thank you for your time in response to this topic.

This is not a reply to a fix, rather a comment about adding this to the core.

Back in the early 1990's I used a database called "Q&A" by Symantec, for the time it was perfect as Windows 3.1 had just been released and this program was DOS based.

Back to the point.

When entering customers at my repair shop, we were a repair depot for several electronics chain stores, they came from all over the US.

Our database entry person pointed out how hard it was to collect city and state..

Our solution was a zip code database was merged into the system.

I'm sure one of the coders here could make a module of the current zip code database and somehow use it in our Dolphin set up.

When a member signs up they are asked for name, sex, and then zip. The rest would automatically be filled in, I have seen this work on several systems, let's do it for Dolphin.

novembernice, you have taken on a huge task that IMO cannot be done by one person!

Greetings, Newton27!

I very much appreciate your thorough and honest reply regarding my inquiry/question.

I understand that this would be a difficult, challenging, time-consuming task to add all cities per Sate in dependent fields, and that it would be realistic and feasible to hire a coder to create a zip code database/table, to which when completed would auto populate city per zip code.

Do you have any proposals or suggestions on who I may contact at Dolphin or elsewhere to inquire about creating such a module? Or do you have any idea on cost of task?

I am creating a social dating website, and having members search for connections they seek in nearby cities is crucial for the success of the website and dating community.

Thank you again for your time in response and your honest reply to my inquiry.

If I was even slightly qualified on computer coding, programming, software development, etc; I would have been more than excited to achieve such results in creating the module myself; but I have a slightly boring, uneventful and less engaging and stimulating JOB (just over broke) that prevents me from taking time out for the fun things such as coding or learning how to build modules, etc;

Best regards and wishes,

It is early in the day here for Boonex, I would give this topic some time for the whole community to see, I bet you get some type of solution.

I see your new here too, normally when your asking for a quote for some work, you should post in the "Jobs" section here; that is your best shot at getting a fast quote or even if it can be done..

I am creating a social dating website, and having members search for connections they seek in nearby cities is crucial for the success of the website and dating community.

We have a current default module, " ZIP Code Search version 1.0.9 by BoonEx."

Have you read up on how to use this feature?

This is taken from the module page, this feature is not enabled by default.

Help

Search powered by Geonames is a free geocoding service and the maximum search radius is always limited to 30km.

Search powered by Google is working when "World Map" module from BoonEx is installed and profile positions are geocoded.

To enable search by ZIP code in profiles' search forms go to:
Dolphin admin panel -> Builders -> Profile Fields -> Search Profiles
. You need to drag "Country" and "Location" fields, at least. Please remove any other location related blocks like "zip code" and/or "city".

Hello!

So I am very confused now. Since my last post--and your very expedient response--I have only moved city and state out of my search and moved "Location" and Country" fields to the active area. Was I supposed to change/move/make inactive any fields under the "join form" "edit profile" or "view Profile" sections.

I had previously added states under Country, and I started adding cities under one state (Minnesota) under the "join form" field.

Also, I am not sure what to do from here. I just want to have the option for members to find other people in their vicinity nearby by zip code. However, it seems as if there are several process steps that I am not sure how and what order to follow.

When I follow the link to get a Google API key as indicated in the "Profiles Map Administration" module, which option to I choose? When I click on the link, I get the following:

Under Profiles MAP administration it indicates:

"You need to update all profile locations if you have installed this mod after creating any profiles. Please update profile locations first, and after completion you can update cities."

In blocks:

Update profiles                Update Cities

My questions: Would my admin profile creation be a profile that was created after installing the World Map Module? Because then isn't it always the case that world map is installed AFTER any profiles are created?

I am not sure what I will need to do here so the World Map will "talk to" and work together with locations

Do I have to edit anything in locations?

What do I all complete under the Profiles MAP administration here:

Google Maps API key:
Profile address field name for exact address geocoding:
Profiles search results to show per page:

I just really want to have an easy way for people to search and find other people in their local area. My site is a social networking/dating site, and this ability to find people who live nearby is crucial. Can someone please assist me? Will I need to hire to have someone help me with this?

I have chosen not to work any further on my website, as this confusion has been a huge hurdle that I cannot even begin to think about getting over the top of. I am disinterested in developing my site if there isn't a way for Boonex/Dolphin software to accommodate a simple search function.

I appreciate any help, advice, assistance on this matter. I am willing to do what I need to do to get this to work, and I don't want to install, reinstall, move, update a module or make changes that will affect my website and other modules in such a way that a reinstall of my software is necessary...this has already happened to me 3 times, and here I am over one year later still attempting to develop my website.

Please...I appreciate your assistance and support. Thank you in advance!

Real quick, our map module no longer requires the API, you can and should leave it blank.

Let me finish what I'm doing now ATM and re check how this part works; it has been a while since I even tried it.

Thank you, I really appreciate that because I am at a standstill...and I want to get my website up and rolling with members who want to connect with others via location/distance!

Have a great day!

Check out how selecting country (if US is selected state drops down for selecting) then inputting zipcode automatically sets city  in the join form on Skadate Demo site... boonex needs this mod badly... that software also lets you choose male / female / OR couple when joining with info for both members of the couple its not male /female/ AND couple as is Dolphin.... if somehow Dolphin could adapt those features there'd be no comparison to Dolphin for its software... but until then it's a toss-up (give up certain features of one software for certain features of the other).
