The same old BS is in play once again. A developer sells a module that requires it to be activated or registered so it is tied to one domain. I don't have a problem with that, none at all. However, I do have a problem if that developer won't respond to a request for the activation; the only reason to not answer is if he or she is in hospital. Holidays, babies, no other reason because you are selling on the Market and you either answer the emails or set up an automated way to do it. I have a solution; rip out the activation and use the module that you paid to be able to use. Geeks, making the world a better place |
This may sound a bit crazy, but how about messaging a moderator/bosun with the 411? BoonEx Certified Host: Zarconia.net - Fully Supported Shared and Dedicated for Dolphin |
It is one that has done this many times. Maybe Boonex should consider changes in the Market that if a developer is going to sell a locked module, they need to provide the key in xx number of days. Boonex should not allow locked modules to be sold unless the keys are provided in a timely fashion.
My question to you Nathan is how long should we wait for the key before filing a complaint? How many complaints filed before the developer is punished in some way? When this happens over and over and over with the same developer, that developer needs some incentive; how about fines for such action? Monetary fines and they no longer sell in the Market if they don't pay the fine.
Edit: Two messages have already been sent out to the developer.

I am not going to say at this point. I am working with another party so they would need to file the complaint. I was letting off a bit of steam last night because this presents a block to getting the work done.

If they don't respond within 2-3 days, send me a message and I'll look into it. Basically, if they don't resolve the issue, either a refund is forced (with a ban held to their head), or I recommend filing a dispute with PayPal (and a ban is applied to their head). Most choose to resolve the issue, since they like selling stuff.
Here's the dealio with the market - there's no API or system for encrypted stuff. Developers have to process those orders manually, and if they're not available because of personal or health reasons, there's going to be a wait until they can look into their backlog of orders.
I don't like encrypted modules - and I really don't like modules that require activation. They restrict the user to the whims of the developer, and if that developer leaves, there's not a lot that can be done. Because of that, I don't recommend them if there's a non-encrypted alternative available. As for ripping out the callback, etc., that's a no-no, and I'll pretend you were all talking about the new season of Glee. Posting about how to circumvent copy protection isn't allowed on these forums.

As I stated, I don't have a problem with someone using an activation scheme in their modules; it is not getting the activation after paying that is the problem; it is not the customer here, it is the seller. As I said, I was just letting off a bit of steam and was not asking anyone how to circumvent copy protection; I did not even mention the module in question.
I hope this module is not a call home type thing where it has to contact the activation server or it stops working. That is one worry about Boonex; we pay to remove the branding but what happens if the licensing server goes belly up? Do we suddenly have Boonex branding showing up on our sites that we paid to have removed?

For Dolphin, the license is checked once and the script ticks a box, so to speak. This was done after the DDoS attacks on the server that caused earlier versions of Dolphin to show the license or suffer from increased loads while checking with the BoonEx servers. Unless you change the license, I don't think there are any more checks.
Please send me message with more information about the developer and module in question.

This story has a familiar ring to it. Hmmm. |
Nathan, not sure why you deleted my posts. No module or developer was mentioned anywhere, I just asked a question.
This particular un-named module, I bought myself 3 times in the past (around $100 a piece!) and the dev didn't activate any of them properly. I did dispute this quite some time ago using moderator intervention, but he replied simply saying he had activated the 3 URLs of mine on his server when I bought the mods (which at that time was way over a year before).
However, on my end, none of them worked.
So, I looked into my own fix for the modules and figured it out.
I see others are now still getting the same issues I had all that time ago, and not getting replies to emails etc...
exactly how it went for me.

Which is why changes are needed in the Market. Most of the developers that I have worked with are great. There have only been a couple where I had issues. However, if the issues with those couple continue to show up over and over and over again for others, then it is obvious something heavier than just saying we will ban you if you don't reply is needed. As Barney was fond of saying, "Nip it in the bud".

Unfortunately I also already had support issues with some vendors here. I've had to wait two weeks for activation key. I had problems with update and I did not have any support, even sending over 5 emails to the vendor. I had to solve the problem myself.
There are some vendors here that give very good support. Even when there is a problem, they try to solve and respond quickly. But there are others who do not even create a support forum.
