Account Active - Says Inactive

I'm at my wits end trying to figure out why active accounts can not edit their profile settings. Please see picture for illustration:

We have tried to activate the accounts manually, confirm email (even though we have everything set to activate automatically) change settings around on the profile fields, still can't figure where these errors are coming from.

Unfortunately, this site is so heavily customized we can't afford to upgrade so we desperately need 6.0 help.
