I have been monitoring the traffic to my site which has been live since January using quantcast and google analyctics there are many sources that I have tried but the only one which really works and is free is one called linkreferral, through this site alone I went from 0 page rank to 2 in one month with approximately 800 unique visitors a month from them alone although I noticed most are passers by there are quite a few that have signed up. even if they dont sign up, they have the option to add your site to thier favorites which gives you a backlink. they only give you 15 cents per referral which is a waste of time but the increase in traffic is definately worth it. they also have a high page rank and will link to your front page and the best part is that its free. I have nothing to do with this site, just thought I would pass on the information. you can check it out here http://www.linkreferral.com/adwel.pl?oldrefid=149334 |

I hear what you are saying Sammie yes they pay 15 cents per referral which I said is a waste of time this is no get rich quick scheme. but I thought that other users may be interested to know that this site does actually help you in more ways than one, firstly they will link to your front page, they have a link popularity of over 500,000 and a high page rank. so surely that cant be a bad thing in the eyes of the search engines and the only reason I posted hear is because I do use it and I do have very good results with it. If you know of any other methods of boosting your site traffic which you have seen results from, I would be very interested to know about them. And I don't see anything wrong in putting my referral link in the post, it really makes no difference if you click it or go straight to the site. but I feel that if its there, why not use it. I am all for learning tips and tricks from others who have spent countless hours trying different methods of promotion and I don't mind sharing when I find a good one. after all, its like trying to find a needle in a haystack these days. Anyway I don’t know if you have looked at it but I would be interested to know your opinion.
p.s. when I said I have nothing to do with this site I meant that I do not own or control it, but obviously am a member there, sorry for the misunderstanding.

where did you get your information that google has dropped them? they are still showing as a site which links to my home page it is also not true that they encourage spamming, maybe you didn't read the rules there. they have 180,000 members and A 5 page rank is not at all bad, boonex, com is also 5 and bebo.com is 7 and has a google link poularity of 409 so if Bebo are 409 then 153 for a relatively new site must be quite good. If you had taken the time to investigate you would have noticed that the only sites that will be linking to yours are the ones which fall in the same category as yours. Also there is no link exchanging where you have to put another persons code in your site, only constructive reviews on the content and quality of your site. Anyway, it has worked very well for me so anyone that looks at it can obviously make their own decisions. but thanks for your opinion.
BTW since joining I have had 375 reviews on my site, some of which have been very constuctive critisism and have helped enormously in the development.

"Directory Script or Directory Software can Harm your site"
This is only partly true. I use PhpLinkDirectory and when I added the "pagerank" feature to my directory I got docked a full point by Google. The technology added so many keywords and search terms though, that I'm glad I did it- my traffic and relevant hits went way up after I started working with directories, and the page rank came back to where it was before.

I don't understand your point- is that sarcasm? I haven't worked on my directory for a long time, but it still generates a great deal of focused traffic and I like the technology. The pagerank thing was a feature I didn't like anyway, and I am not using it to try to get reciprical links. There is nothing inherently wrong with having a directory on your website.

I have to agree with Rob, I am also not using it for reciprocal links and I have had a lot of new members joining my site just because they looked at and reviewed it through the linkreferral system. Obviously there are link farms, directories etc. which we would not be associated with. but a categorized directory where members can view and review other sites in thier own category surely can't do you too much harm. |

Why are you being so nasty on this issue? There is nothing wrong with having a directory on your site. When I put my directory up my pagerank did go down as I mentioned- (mostly because I implemented a "pagerank" feature without really knowing what it was) - but my traffic went WAY up- because I had far more relevant keywords. I'm sorry Sammie- you are going to have to consider the possibility that just maybe you don't know everything about everything. I'm happy with my directory and you are wrong- I won't "be sorry in the end".
This thread has nothing to do with Dolphin and I'm not going to post on this issue again. If anyone wants to compare notes on directory technologies drop me a PM.

I have just read Google Webmaster help, guidelines and they still suggest submitting your site to relevant directories in your industry. after all Dmoz, Yahoo etc are directories which all have categorized listings. So I am now getting a little confused. Seems like the whole thing is a bag of worms. Anyway enough is enough and thanks to all for the input. |
I have found that one of the best ways to get your link out there is to post it in your signature in forums.
