If you want to gain hits to your blog or website for free you can do so, but it takes a lot of commitment. I spend on average 84 hours a week trying to boost sign-ups because to me hits don't really matter. As I said before you can gain hits like crazy if your site is NOT a niche. If you are not serving a small market of the community, if you are serving say all American Citizens then its very easy but if you are targeting just a small niche, your efforts can seem almost dismal. Here are some suggestions that are 100% Free!
1.) Have a FaceBook/Twitter Account and start adding friends.
2.) Create promotional videos and add to Youtube.com
3.) Write free press releases ( I will give you instructions later on this.)
4.) Add your website to yellowpages & databases online.

6.) Use e-mail Campaigns, you can try using http://www.mailchimp.com/ They are free for the first 6000 e-mails your send. Then they are fairly inexpensive after this.

8.) In your e-mail signature, write your URL to your blog or website.
9.) If you need names, you can sign up for a free account with http://www.jigsaw.com/ ( I used to use this for the Corporate world. How it works is by points, you add a name of a business and gain 5 points and you use 5 points when you need a name.) Recently Jigsaw merged with http://www.salesforce.com/. ( its kind of tedious way to grab names.)
10.) Sign up for message boards that interest you and begin posting away.
11.) Ask other website owners to do banner or link exchanges.
12.) When on a blog ask the owner if you can leave a link to your blog or website.
13.) Leave business cards or home flyer's where ever your think is best.
14.) Have a downloadable business card or flyer available so others can distribute your flyer's.
15.) Collect e-mails from your network, friends, online yellow pages, blogs, websites, and send a monthly e-mail to request their assistance in spreading desire to refer people to your site.
16.) Everyone likes something for free, so offer something FREE.. ( Free download)
