First time i installed the chat module (d6) it didn't take long to realize it would never be useful. And four years later i still think it's useless.
Boonex, an alternative chat module is really needed.

I agree, I think 4 years is alot and flash is dead. They replaced everything but the chat? omg. I think 7.1 would have been the appropiate time for a so called "long expected clean version we were all waiting for" |
I agree! so much to do.... |
I agree...all of my users using shoutbox instead chat module...

dont fully agree.. chat is not altogether useless... Ive had a site going before that had its regular chat users... each night at the same time about 40 people would hit the chat rooms! Became quite a regular gang! Function wise, I think the module could do with updating though... its not the most comprehensive chat module out there... does the basic job though. |
For one, I don't want to install any third party chat system. Look at what happened with Meebutt (Meebo) which some sites were using. As for Flash as the engine, while looking through open source chat solutions for a website, I found most were Flash based. The question we might want to look at is using MySQL to handle the chat. I did see a mod once that integrated phpFreeChat into Dolphin. That uses Flash and Ajax and one can use a flat file instead of a MySQL database. The questions we ask is what kind of performance would we get if we have a lot of chatters online. I do have some questions about the Chat module. We were using it yesterday to handle some discussion concerning the site and some kept losing connection, one claimed he would post and we would not see it, and we tended to double post at times. Geeks, making the world a better place |
