[Suggestion] Site Shut-Down/Lock-Down

Perhaps it is not possible at this time in the development process, but I would like to suggest this feature for the future.

It would be quite convenient to be able to shut down the site, thereby preventing access to it to all users except for admins. A simple "We are conducting maintenance" type of page would appear over the duration of the shut down.

For the sake of research and sampling, you guys could take a look at how IPB implements this feature.

The great part about it that, when in "shut-down mode", every section redirects to the "undergoing maintenance" page.

Quite handy when installing upgrades, restoring files, adding mods, handling attacks, etc., as it would prevent new info from being added to the db, among other things.

Brilliant thought. Will definitely come in handy. Cool

Great idea!

(AntonL didn't think we needed this in 7.0)

I think being able to put your site in "maintenance mode" is a very must have. Obviously others do not think so since I see that the ticket has a milestone of 7.1

Nothing to see here

Yeah.... Boonex stopped accepting any and all requests, however small, months ago, and just piled everything onto 7.1

It's what happens when people demand a release before a product is really ready.  There's never time to do it right, but there's always time to do it over.

Yeah, Vbulletin has this nice feature built-in as well...

So, what's the workaround? How are you guys handling it? Are you handling it using .htaccess???

My site is under construction as well and I would like to keep it away from users and spiders till it's ready to launch.

Currently i have just password protected my document root and so nobody can hit it without having the valid username/password.

Any thoughts on other workarounds would be great.

There is a mod for D6 by Aramis that seems to put the site on "maintenance-mode" (http://www.expertzzz.com/Downloadz/view/3224). He says he will be upgrading all of his mods, so this might be one of them if it does not get resolved by BoonEx.

However, this should really be out-of-the-box stuff--even phpfox has it, BTW. That is why I suggested it for later versions if it was too late for such an enhancement in the 7.0.X series.
