.HTACCESS madness – "Forbidden" when file is on server

Dear experts,

I am a "code retard" and can't seem to figure out why the newly uploaded .htaccess file (taken directly from Dolphin ZIP) causes the following error:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Is this a problem my server has? Or is there something in the htaccess-file that I need to alter?

Thank you for your help!

Hi there,

Have you tried to delete the .htaccess file on your ftp account.  There could have been a .htaccess file created when your account was set up.  If it had been set up using root, you would not have the permissions needed to amend it.  I would suggest speaking to your hosting company to change the access level of the .htaccess file so that it can be used by you.

If you have C/Panel or Plesk when dont you try and use the internal ftp program to see if that will allow you to edit the file.  If it does then just copy and paste the new code into the existing file.  Just remember to be careful not to alter the existing code as this may affect your hosting.

Hope this helps

I just created an account simply to say thanks.  Great, simple, to the point advice.  I read a dozen different tips on this problem but yours was the one to get to the problem quickly.

Cheers!

(Oh, the problem was on my own linux machine. Never occurred to me that root privileges had become attached.)
