I have invested more than 500 bucks in dolphin 6.1 if I change to 7 Ill lose all that so I don't know what to do I have many mods installed on dolphin 6.1. What should I do!
Michel Swiss we are all grown ups in here, the guys has a point so you don't have to post up a comment like that.
Why move to 7 when you have tied up a lot of money is 6.1 unless you can use the mods you already have.
As long as you use Dolphin there will always be upgrades. BoonEx will not sit on their hands because of our own free will we purchased mods that has nothing to do with them.
Here are a few things to consider when buying mods for your site.
1. Will the developer continue to update it as needed?
2. Are you willing to take a lost if they don't and the mod becomes obsolete.
I think for sites with heavy moderations you should be happy were you are... who says you have to continue to upgrade.
Maybe see more you could keep the site you have and start a new one with the new D7 if you really want to use it.
Boonex have promised that there will be a final 6.1.5 version for bug fixes after 7 stable is out. so you can keep your version of 6.1 and you'll loose nothing.
as to upgrading to 7 from 6, this will really only happen for sites that have no mods. if you have modified your site in anyway, it will not upgrade automatically, you'll have to do a manual upgrade,
manual upgrade means:
install dolphin 7 fresh and them move your sites media files over to 7 from 6 and the tables in the relevent database see more tables ensureing that the tables fit with 7's tables.
no template will upgrade without you working on it.
anyone that just changed the uni css files to change the sites looks will loose them too.
I keep saying over and over again, that is it not the responsibility of software/script developers to ensure that their products are compatible with third party add-ons. It is the responsibiity of those providing the third party add-ons to provide upgrades of their addon to the primary product. That's the way it has always been everywhere else in the software world, and it is not realistic or logical to expect anything different at Boonex. You can't design a new product based on all the existing see more third party addons for prior versions.
Those third party addons were bought for Dolphin 6, not Dolphin 7. It's no different from having bought all that software for MSDos, then Windows 3.1, then Windows 98, then windows 2000, then Windows XP, Vista....... etc. Did I miss anything? Over the years I have spent thousands on new software, and then again on new computers so the new software would load in the same day. Sometimes, money goes down the drain if you want to keep up with technology. It's just the way it is. You can either stay with your current investment, or take advantage of new technology.
Soon Dolphin 7 will be out and everyone will be buying mods for it. Somewhere down the road, we'll be having the same conversation when Dolphin 8 draws near.
I have a heavily moded 6.14 site and from what I can tell, 7 has lots of those mods built in. I think you should go with a 7 install and then start adding in mods from 6.14 that are missing. You will most likely have to modify a bit to get them to work. The authors might offer an upgrade for discounted rate.
I have found, that it is better to stick it out with the program that you have currently & give the developers time to work out any bugs that may be in the newest available version. It sucks to have to wait, but it is for the best sometimes.
The 2 moders i mostly trusted have made a great move of good willing , and will upgrade their mods without an extra charge...now gentlemen, THAT is professionalism...
PS(Talking bout investment, i'm at 2000euros and counting)

Not very helpful there Mr. Swiss.

Test drive 7.0 when it is final, if then you think it is worth the added expense to trade up then do so. IF not keep driving 6.1.4
You could also own both if you were so inclined.
