a bit (too much) of chaos

aph3x posted 30th of May 2009 in Community Voice. 36 comments.

I'm not the blog type of fellow and this post is the exception that proves the rule and I'll (try to) be brief.

Been part of a quite big community for the past 4years and something over at xoops.org where i was part of the official design team and when a split happened in the devs team i joined icms over at impresscms.org. As am making themes for a living for the cms solutions listed above over at aphexthemes.com I'm actively enough on both fronts of x and icms and both communities combined won't produce as much chaos as this community here produces every now and then, dolphin am using just for fun for a site i own so i don't really care if it produces something, it'll be enough for me if it could just work as it should (not that it does)

Anyway x have had its share of chaos in the past but definitely not at as high as it gets here, sure users in a community are bound to fight at one point due to different perspectives and opinions over this and that and sure not all fights are constructive, but things here sometimes are really hard to understand/follow.

Some are complaining about users asking for support here in blog section well this happens cause it was incouraged in the first place, if say 10people asked for support and got it, it was only natural that more will do the same and that soon enough support in the blog section will be taken for granted.

When i joined i thought well since its a payed for product then things will go smoother and that users will be united, devs will mind their business with bugs fixing and new releases along with clear official support of their product, boy i was wrong.

Its really intimidating sometime to ask for support (or any question for that matter) cause this or that regular user will jump and bite your head off cause u asked a too dumb question or u ask in the wrong place or simply bite your head off for the fun of it.

Anyway this is how i ocasionally see unity around here cause i might not post but i surely read all thats posted.

With that being said, i'll be releasing some free dolphin themes when i'd have mastered better the theme engine of it (quite soon).

Wish you all a great weekend

Dear aph3x,

Your skills of observation are excellent and your conclusions are concrete.

How would you like to help us fix the problem?

Boonex is expanding the "Pundits" group and based upon your levelheadedness, your skill level, and your length of time in the community I think you would be a welcome addition. I will be glad to nominate you.

I am one of the new Pundits and I am volunteering my time because I am absolutely convinced that the core leadership of Boonex are honest see more and aboveboard. I am convinced that the company will succeed and I'm hitching my star to a winning team.

Let me know.

Juker, I think the pundit group has quite enough members already. Possibly too large. No offense aph3x.

Let's not forget the real reason the pundit group was expanded, and that is Quality Control. The pundit group was expanded to review Dolphin code and assist in making it as bug free as possible before release to the general public.... nothing more, nothing less....unless I've missed something.

Why on earth would you say something like that? Are you inferring that there are people that believe the reverse? I'm not trying to create more chaos, I'm just trying to understand that comment.
sammie
the same reason he has to put Pundit in most of his new posts, (power ha ha ha there is none. )yet i never once put it in a sig.

why do you think i was so eager to resign? 20 of the 27 on that list are who i put forward, sorry juker, you wasnt one of the 20, now you know why.

Hi aph3x,

Thanks for posting this and it is a good observation. The past week or so has been a roller coaster of high intense drama and changes. From the apology blogs to defamation blogs. I can understand why you lined out the word unity in your blog.

One of the changes was the appointment of moderators. Previously the moderation on Unity was a bit sparse and haphazard at. This unfortunately allowed troll-like behaviour to infest some of the posts. I believe that will be changing.

@aph3x see more "Some are complaining about users asking for support here in blog section well this happens cause it was incouraged in the first place, if say 10people asked for support and got it, it was only natural that more will do the same and that soon enough support in the blog section will be taken for granted."
You are correct in some ways. First off, there does need to be more support. Secondly, questions that made into the blogs were not moderated for one reason or another. From the outset, everyone was encouraged to post in the forums, unfortunately that didn't happen and the posts were not moderated. At this time, we are again encouraged to post questions at the forum. For previous question blogs, I don't know what BoonEx plans to do with them. It may form part of the clean up as well.

@aph3x "Its really intimidating sometime to ask for support (or any question for that matter) cause this or that regular user will jump and bite your head off cause u asked a too dumb question or u ask in the wrong place or simply bite your head off for the fun of it."
This is a valid point. To me there are no "dumb" questions. You only know what you know. With moderators and better moderation tools being looked at, ideally "troll-like replies" will be kept to a minimum. Additionally with more focus on support and documentation it should help to give more answers.

Good luck with your themes and I look forward to seeing some of them.

I agree with much of what you have said; things have not worked as well as they should have and the chaos you mention has become a catalyst for change here on Unity.

We encourage you to become part of the solution to the problems Unity faces. I for one am excited about the positive changes being made and welcome your contribution of new themes and ideas.

You exhibited some good "Moderator" skills yesterday Bro! - Cool, Calm, and Collected.
sammie
Caltrade, close your mouth. you moan about your right to free speach being a target of moderation, thats why you have faught change all the time. well you telling me to go away in an attemt to silence me, is nothing more than trying to gag me. everyone can see you for what you are. and its here in this thread about the fighting and here you are trying to tell me to shut up, that is a hipocrit.
and you still do drive by neg voting. you missed a few 1000 posts.
sammie
sorry that was posted in the wrong reply,
sammie
and i have been saying that for the last 2 years. oh well. nothing will change
Sammie we are all learning to speak together as one, unified in our approach and change has already begun.

Focus on future solutions and not past problems.

Change first comes from within. :)
sammie
the only thing that will change, is who fights with who now. nothing will change.
To change the world first you must change your mind.

Add your voice to the choir, we need the positive Sammie.

the only thing that is constant is change. i look forward to it

Dear aph3x,

If you are interested in the invitation please contact either Dwain or Myself or James in private.

Actions are being taken to provide the Pundits with complete privacy and we will soon have our own forums, etc.

The Boonex Blog in particular has been under attack for far too long and countless men like yourself have been turned away.

Best Regards,
Juker - Pundit

I also agree your background sounds impressive to say the least. I think that and your desire for Unity are enough for me.

They could solve one of these problems just by adding a "newbie" forum where people would be free to ask beginner questions. This would take about 30 seconds- I don't know why they won't do it. In my opinion they selected the moderators based on the wrong attribute - their technical expertise. They should have been something akin to "second level technical support" - I predict quick burnout. I've been here for 500 days now and have about 900 posts - but most of those are simply see more links to where the question has already been answered - I would have been a lazy moderator. Welcome to "Unity".

p.s. Looking forward to seeing your free themes - I could use some.
sammie
well the could end most of the frustration if they just put the word "Documentaion" with a link to them.
Trac is a developers tool most of the people that come here are looking for answers, as new webmasters and old ones, do not use Trac, most dont know what it is, and they are looking for the link to "Docs or Documentaion"

I agree with the newbie idea caltrade, this is very badly needed. A lot of the question are asked time and time again by new members which clogs things up for the more experienced of members to ask detailed question which us newbies dont really understand. a newbie section would very quickly clear a lot of the forum up for people who are a little more advanced, and give the new members an easier intro to ask their levels of questions without feeling too intimidated or out of their depth.

We learn from mistakes, the relations here are very strong, perhaps that's why we argue sometimes..
I personally never seen anybody in the answers or forums to "bite your head off".. the members try their best to help the newbies and to solve their problems.. so you can say they "bite their time off".. rarely there is no answer to their posts.. so I disagree with you here..
You're right about the present "chaos", but I know that once dolphin 7 is going to be used on see more boonex, some things will be changed accompanied by the new "dolphin constitution"..
aph3x
Thank you all for the replies i really didn't expected so many positive reactions
I too am convinced that core leadership of Boonex is honest..I'm not that crazy to follow a project everyday (most time of the day) with the hope "it fails now, it fails now..oh well maybe tomorrow".
That the project fails to rise to ones expectation well that's another thing.
@Juker and houstonlively
Far from me the thought of joining "pundits" "devs" or whatever other list for that see more matter, i might have some expertise with similar projects but i lack the expertise with this particular one so i'd be stupid not to admit that
@mastermindsro
I might've exagerated with the biting but some very bitter responses aren't hard to find ..the biting part came as a bonus but in contrast with that i also met nice people who contacted me to help me solve the problem so i suppose the situation balanced itself
As far as I'm concerned am willing to help in any way i can/am allowed to cause helping the project really means helping ourselves.
Support here is failing cause is not centralized...i gotta check blogs and i gotta check forums and if that doesn't work then i can always pray from an answer by email from support@boonex, if that doesn't work.. well then follow the "I don't have a solution but i admire the problem" mentality (which I've been doing for the past month). Most issues clearly reside in the fact that product wasn't tested enough in many server environments (has been said many many times before),FAQs are incomplete, Troubleshooting advices are incomplete, testers didn't try to "break" the given demo version as a tester should've, probably it was just installed and if installation worked then great it works lets go ahead and release it, and if testers are all from inside boonex where their systems are made especially for dolphin again a wrong step as thats not proper testing as thats not real life behavior simulation hence the same issue raised again and again. We forget that some of the visitors of a site are simply idiots and if there's a chance to break a system then they'll do it and they'll do it in a way you wouldn't thought of.
Basic features are missing from dolphin such as as centralized comments feature where admin can decide if anons can post or not or at least add a captcha to the form (not that this will stop one from posting all sort of crap), owner of an item shouldn't be able to vote its own stuff for the same reason is not possible to vote your own profile, while anons can comment (when the shouldn't)..they can't vote (when they sould've). Admin should also be able to select which blocks go where in the site not only where in a given page..one has to hack to achieve that?!
There are more obvious issues (obvious to me, don't know about the others) but I'll stick to this for now
Thank you again for taking the time of readin/replying to the post
Juker
aph3x,

Thanks for being a good sport! Both of your posts are really interesting. When I need a good honest opinion I hope you won't mind if I look you up.

But I gotta say "If it walks like a Pundit!"
