Words of advice

Boonex Dolphin is a disapointment, Now here me out, this is not a rant, only my assessment of a situation. Im sure I probably came across dolphin like everyone else, I thought, "Gee" Id Love to make a website just like (pick one, myspace/youtube/craigslist) and found it on google. And Im also sure that judging by the posting on this forum many of the folks who have downloaded this program are not tech wizards, only people that can get down with front page a little. Now the disappointment doesnt come from a program thats rife with errors(which it is) It comes from Dolphins lack of support and and disregard for folks time. Case in point, v6.1 "your final release" well thats obvious now that thats a load of crap. Ill wait patiently on your version 6.1 patch to come along just like I waited for the others. To make matters worse Im sure when the patch does come out, it will create its own set of errors and youll be  silent as you have been with me when it comes to help. Now I know, I know, this is free software and these guys are doing thier best Bla,Bla. But the truth is this is NOT free software, Its a product that is being sold and is trying to be profited from just like any other software, were all just promoting and testing it using the free version, The Beta Version it seems.
And thats where my biggest problem is. Dolphin it seems weather they are tying to or not are developing their software at our expense.which is actually ok wih me, just let me know ahead of time. Dont get me to download a program and then fill me in that I will have to mess with it again and again for who knows how long.If anyone at dolphin is reading this heres 2 things I think may help a great deal
1. Dont release versions, patchs etc. every week or two. it shows your only trying for the short term fix, just trying to make the forums happy. get your ducks in a row and get a solid product together.
2.Answer emails, even a simple auto genarated one to let me know youll get around to me whenever.

Ignoring people after all just seems to encourage long blog postings ;)

Selen,

Nice post, I have a few comments of my own on this.

I do believe that not everyone can be made happy when it comes to business, and if everyone held out on releasing something until it was perfect, nothing would be released.

Some of the greatness of boonex products is the ability for people and developers to mix and end up with a much better product in the end. And yes, it is a continuous cycle. I mean look at google, and how long have Google everything been in BETA, and will be for see more ever.

Now as for the support, yes I agree at times it sucks.. but it is getting better.

although , when ever I send in an email I get a response email (auto responder) letting me know my email was received and I will be contacted. - now if everyone else isnt getting that response, then maybe I have the "bat phone" email address :-)

But again, I email fairly specific people and not support. So its possible the support emails might not autorespond.

Your best bet for most free software is to get support from the community and its members. Unless you pay for the branding-free option, you *are* getting free software, and its best to utilize the power of the community to address your concerns.

CyberXing,
Let me get the "Bat phone" email!
I agree, Having people and developers mix and end up with something much better is one of the hallmarks of modern web design, look at the success of myspace and others and even the reason we all have begun boonex websites in the firstplace are perfect examples of end users changing and catering a product to themselves that the developer could never have foreseen.
That I agree with, What I take issue with is getting a program that is advertised see more as a turnkey product to meet the needs above, only to find out its still very much in development and testing, and your the tester, and that can only be discovered after spending hours upon hours of
making it your own.
There is also in my opinion multiple website issues, with blogs postings and information strung between multiple locations, many of these websites then have links that have been moved yet to another location making it even more confusing to someone with a problem trying to find a solution.
Boonex must realize something if they are to continue trying to be competitive, right now they are the only game in town, people are not really into "Boonex" per say, people are into the idea of a myspace/youtube etc all in one website template. As soon as a new guy comes along that offers the same with less bugs and better support they stand the chance of being in trouble.

Dolphinelite,
As someone who has used "free software" just as much as the next guy the community is always the first place to go, which is why Im here. My plan has been to finish the site, make sure I can get the bugs out, and then pay the $39 bucks. Just by reading the forum posts Ive figured out Im not alone in that game plan. Dolphin is intended as a site to make money, the overwhelming majority of people are going to pay the 39 or 99 once they are up and running,if they can get up and running that is.
So as youve said DolphinElite, my best bet is the community, perhaps you or someone else can help me. please see my post titled "youtube install gone wrong"
any insight would be appreciated

Oh, one more thing...If if pay the $39 bucks will boonex fix this for me?(Im serious)
DosDawg
selen,
its doubtful that boonex will fix anything for you or anyone else who uses this forsaken script. we are all just lab rats and they are prospering from our toil. dont get me wrong, i love dolphin/orca/ray because i like to ad hoc program (too lazy to write a program of this magnitude).

i have used most every available open source cms portal available to man on the internet, and none, hear what i say, none have support, its all a community effort, however within that community are the team see more members of the development, therefore they are part of the community. not stuffed away behind some oversized flat panel with a fluffy chair, throwing out syntax and never checking it. it doesnt matter if they check it, somebody in this community is going to check it and report the bug. then and only then will that be addressed in the next patch or version release.

DolphinElite,
this is not "FREE SOFTWARE" ymessenger is free software. Irfanview is free software, these are releases that work when they are released, yes they continue to build on it, and yes there are bugs, but not so critical that it renders the application useless, such as some that i have come across in the release of dolphin v6.0.0005 as well as dolphin v6.1.

so to use the term so loosely "FREE SOFTWARE" this is not FREE, this is OPEN SOURCE, totally two different animals. the worse of the evils here are, the fact that they release what is deemed as being free, and adfree, well there you go, so are you telling me that the adfree is less buggy than the free version. NO its not.

the free version is lamented with ads all over the flipping place, so that doesnt make it free, its makes you a node on an advertising tier. now consider the release of dolphin 6.1 but moreso the release of Ray 3.5, where the title bar was utilized for a means of advertising the boonex site. this was done on not only the "FREE" version as you refer to it as, but it was done on the "ADFREE" version. That means somebody paid a lot of money to become not only a beta tester for boonex, but also has been sacrificed as a means of advertising, all while BOONEX was spending the money and ignoring the posts in the "FORUM" and ignoring the emails to support.

DolphinElite GET A CLUE.

well thats enough for me, and Selen, that was a rant my man.
