Windows is better than Linux ( 2009 )

Technoman posted 16th of June 2009 in Community Voice. 29 comments.

Here is why Windows is better than Linux!

(1) Installing programs is easy with windows because there is a standard. Try installing VLC and you'll see what I mean.

(2) Anytime you try to install or change something on your own computer you have to type a password. And god forbid you run the program in root, then you get every warning that exists.

(3) Installing anything good in Linux requires an entire weekend ending up in learning how to reinvent the wheel.

(4) To truly use any Linux distribution your going to have to either take classes in how Linux works or spend time reading a lot of books and forums.

So Windows is better than Linux because you are more familiar with it and know how to use it better?

From what I understand Ubuntu is user friendly. I think that Linux boxes make better websrvers and database hosts.

I understand that Linux has a steep learning curve but its probably because most are conditioned by learning on Windows or Mac.

I do think Windows and Macs are more user friendly and compatible with most applications but lets not start doing Mac vs PC vs Linux ads....

For basic network tasks, including file and print serving, Windows is plug-and-play for most businesses

have to go with Kernelpaniker on this, once you learn it doesnt take a weekend...lol

Companies have to spend loads of time rebooting and reconfiguring Linux systems and the people who need to use the Linux Servers are always on stand by, where as for Windows Servers there up and running in a matter of minutes do to any such failure.
teddirez
if your spending time rebooting Linux then your doing it wrong. For the most part you only have to restart the applicable daemon not the whole machine meaning other services can continue to run.
Just because your intelligence doesnt stretch as far as being able to operate it doesnt make it any less user friendly. Just means you dont know how to use it. For the hundreds of thousands that do however, this article would seem more like just another uninformed windows fanboy rant.

If there is one thing about Linux that there is plenty of, aside from the many distributions, it is technical support. Unfortunately, it is either impossible to find an easy answer to a specific issue, or you have to spend 5 hours finding out that the solution was a simple command that needed to be typed into the terminal. Although the major distributions, such as Red Hat, provide paid support, however, the free part is what attracts most switchers to Linux and it can be very disappointing when there see more is no organized help readily available unless you pay someone.

I couldn't get a 1 year old Ubuntu CD to install on the machine I built two weeks ago. I had to download a pre-release version of Dapper just to get an OS running.

With Windows, at least, you *do* get a CD, and the CD will contain drivers which will work. So your brand new disk controller or network card or USB controller or whatever will be usable even during installation.

That's impossible with Linux, as the kernel APIs and ABIs both keep changing, so there's no way to ever deliver a driver see more for older kernels. You need to make sure you upgrade your kernel to the latest revision, which often entails upgrading your entire OS, just to use some recent hardware.

LOL - You have obviously never used Linux then

The version you are trying to use is over 2 years old (dapper - version 6) try downloading the latest version (Jaunty - version 9.04) and your problems will probably go away.

I have used Linux (ubuntu) for many years and never experienced the issues you talk of. It always works right out of the box, drivers and all.

They do supply a CD - BUT you need to download and burn it - But then it is completely free - what do you expect for nothing????? see more Perhaps you expect someone to visit your house and install it for you?

Regarding applications, program installation is one click using the repository, all dependencies are installed automatically (no need to have dot net version blah and servicepack whatnot). Best thing is all packages in the repository are free and you can search through it without having to open a browser / visit a shop / download warez.

IMHO Windows is a bloated, inefficient, bug ridden platform that is not worth the money they charge for it.

IMHO Linux is better simply because it is more stable and more secure.

But the choice is yours...
Technoman
Securing Linux costs less because, for one, it's been a less popular target than Windows server. That's changing over the years especially 2009, for both malevolent hackers and virus writers.

Seriously..... do you have any original thoughts?

Software installation should be easy in Linux if you are installing from a repository but not everything is there.

I was given a good recommendation from someone I trust for a useful Linux program last year.

I searched the repos and the extra repos and it wasn’t there. What happens when your stuck Technically or it wont boot up ( hours to figure out and time consumming )?

Doubtless if I search around the internet for hours, I’ll find out how to install it, but as anyone would say, see more will it install the dependencies?

Faced with these types of issues, many beginners would throw up their hands and revert to something they are familiar with like Windows or Macs. I’ll pass and stick with my Windows OS.

Windows is more vulnerable because of it's core architecture - there is no separation between the core operating files and the user accessible portions of the system.

IE - you can edit the windows / system / program files / etc folders from your user account - this is why it is vulnerable to viruses because as a user you an inadvertently run a file that will damage your system

With Linux and mac this is not possible.

LOL 15 positive votes and one voter.

Reason virus makers don't make them for linux is that they would rather target a larger population, and since Windows is used by more less knowledgeable people, they ignore Linux and Macs.

Also, if your careful, Windows can be just as secure.
DeeEmm
Technoman said - "if your careful, Windows can be just as secure."

My point exactly - you actually need to add additional third party virus checkers / firewalls and anti-malware for windows to be even remotely secure - and this is completely reliant on third party input for virus definitions. If I had spent my hard earned dollars on a product such as this I wouldn't expect that the first thing I needed to do was to patch up the security issues by installing third party software.

Historically see more windows lack of security has caught many windows users out - Even more recently there have been reports of a massive global network of compromised PC's serving as a supercomputer for the distribution and relaying of malware, spam, etc... I wonder why - couldn't be anything to do with the complete vulnerability of the windows OS??? YUP!!!

If windows really was more secure than Linux it would not need these additional measures.

Linux lack of virus's has little to do with market share or the want of hackers - it has everything to do with the fact that the architecture is inherently secure - for the reason's I have mentioned before.

There may be less Linux installations per capita, but of these many are of a mach larger magnitude than comparible windows installs. (corporate servers / web servers etc) They provide much more desirable targets to hack. There is much more Kudos for the average hacker to infiltrate the linux platform than re-releasing another variation on an old worm.

Kudos is everything to a hacker.

Statistics 'prove' that Windows has fewer secuirty issues today with the Newer Os, plus less serious security issues Today, than Linux, and that Windows issues are always fixed, and that they are fixed faster.
gameutopia
What about mac os? Actually I don't know much about mac os.

The thing I hear mentioned about linux often is that it does a better job at handling memory and freeing it up. Where windows hangs or takes much longer to recover.

Guess it's a matter of preference. Linux is certainly something to play around with but I think a lot of people get frustrated and don't give it a chance because they are so used to the windows environment. If it takes more than 2 clicks than that's it they are done with see more it.
Technoman
see moreMicrosoft Windows NT Server 4.0 is 2.5 times faster than Linux as a File Server and 3.7 times faster as a Web Server.

http://www.mindcraft.com/whitepapers/first-nts4rhlinux.html

If we comapre that to the Newer Pcs that we use today, Windows would still be fast and maybe even faster compared to the abouve stats in 1999.

Remember some us now use Quad Processors, Plus we know that Quad are made for Windows and man does it ever have Power, I own one,
it only costs me under 500$ to make.
DeeEmm
If windows is so great as a webserver, and you are such a proponent of it, why are you using Dolphin and not some ASP script???

DM
Technoman
Apache is what I use alongside phpmyadmin and mysql and they all run fast & hand in hand in Windows as a webserver.
houstonlively
So why does your website, http://endlessencounters.com not work? Do you even have a Dolphin site running?
Technoman
Lets face it, the truth is ....

The Socieity today as the world we all live in,
People just want to be able to Plug & Play, no matter what,
thats why WIndows fits in perfectly for any beginer, or novice etc ....

People today dont have time for playing around with toys or Electronics, You have to understand that most of us, we all work hard in our personal lives to bring home the $$ and so thats why people will always turn to something user friendly in the end, no matter what way you see more see it ...
