Unity Community Suggestion - Just a Random Thought Regarding Thumbs Down

jtadeo posted 3rd of April 2009 in Community Voice. 20 comments.

Well it seems there are a few trolls still about in this community who make it a habit to thumb down an otherwise decent post without the courtesy to viewpoint their decision.

I think it's all cool if you give a thumbs down but at the very least, have the courage to your convictions and tell the person posting why the thumbs down. It may help to revise their own views on the matter. It may even open up a dialog about the post and that can lead to some useful discussions.

Maybe BoonEx should add a way for the downers to be listed. It would detract from the drive-by trolls who just thumb down because they have nothing better to do.

What say ye?

Yea! You are right. Do not let the spoil apples, spoil the rest.

well James i think there are a few with multi accounts and others just do it no matter what the post is about, just because they dont like the person.

i for one know that people target me because i piss off a few people. i dont care about that, what does bother me is that they go on to thumb down anyone that supports me in the thread.

what makes me laugh though is even though i have had 100's of thumbs down, i have had so many thumbs up that i have the 2nd most highest member point on the site. see more lol
jtadeo
sammie,

I agree. I noticed that and it is one of the things that initiated this blog post. You seem to be targetted quite a bit. But rest assured you have been a great contributor to the community. So cheers to you!

Anonymity is both the bane and benefit of the Internet. Unfortunately, some would use it to cloak their misdeeds and that is what keeps everyone from getting even more benefit. A fairly Utopian statement, but alas we all need a goal to work towards.

Anyway, I think it would really see more help if the thumb downers avatars get posted. This will help to alleviate indiscriminate negative votes.
sammie
i think both the thumbs down and thumbs up should have the name posted just as a + or - vote as this will also stop people using multi accounts to vote for their own posts

I personally don't care, or even really look at the thumbs, if it looks interesting i will read. I guess the kids are getting restless waiting for spring break..lol

Whats this big fuss about thumbs up and down?Hmmm is Boonex presenting Boony award to members with highest thumbs up or are they paying $1 per thumb up?
jtadeo
lol!

$1 per thumb up, now that would be very cool. Unfortunately such is not the case.

What I was trying to say was that if you are going to give a thumbs down or up, it would be great to give a short comment.

You know, get some banter going etc. This is how people can learn and the discussions can spawn to new directions and so forth.

Consider too that the thumbs up/down can serve as an indication to the blog post's rating or worthiness.

Thumbs up thumbs down whew, at least its just the thumb. Move over two fingers and then I might be offended. Or if the thumb is fully extended with the pinky, then Surfs up and its time to roll.

see moreJames,

You get TWO thumbs up Bro!

If we're going to have a rating system let's take an objective approach and judge fairly. - I think Sammie's right about personalities affecting the equation and people are voting negative out of a dislike for one another rather than based solely upon the comments.

I have bitched at Boonex so much that I think Andrew, Victor T. and the rest of the guys are waiting to pounce with negative votes whenever I make a post.

Sooooo......THUMBS UP EVERYBODY!!!

Juker! :)

I think the comments and concerns you've shared with BoonEx (along with those on the site) have impacted the way BoonEx has approached its next steps and future planning.

It may not be happening fast enough (it never does I guess) but I do get the sense that BoonEx is moving in the right direction.

I am really looking forward to the next 6-8 months. It is going to be exciting as the Web is buzzing like crazy with so many innovations that would be applicable to Dolphin 7 and anyone see more who is interested in community building.
thumbs up and down should be abandoned, it doesn't serve any useful purpose, it doesn't offer an opinion or really say anything or help people to engage in community whereas commenting does...
jtadeo
hmmm...that's probably a better idea. Take it out completely. I agree, it would be great to get some good and productive dialog on Dolphin issues and solutions via comments.

It's the only way we're going to move forward and a community.

Good stuff everyone...

I think the anonymity is okay - anyone who has used ebay for some time will remember the negative feedback issues they suffered - the vendor and buyer got to have a 'showdown' in the feedback comments - they have now made this anonymous as a result.

I think posting names will only serve to cause arguments.

I think the system is good - it depends on how you use it - most support sites offer some kind of 'did you find this answer useful' type scoring - in this type of scenario is is good. But see more I guess it might not be suited to all sites / situations.

I would say that it would be better to be able to enable / disable it as necessary.

Regarding the trolls - one or two ratings is not really an arbiter of a good / bad post but 3/4/5 or more usually is.

I don't really like thumbs up/down. I'd rather go to the 0-5 star rating and record the number of ratings. Then, I'd like to be able to sort by rating, most read, date, etc.
driveby
Dont let it get to you jt there will always be lovers, haters and cowards in this world. I think boonex should just take the whole thing out completely. It is useless as anyone that can click a mouse can vote thumbs up/down.
jtadeo
Just to clarify, I'm more interested as to the "why's" of a thumbs down vs. if some person doesn't like another person and so forth.

I happen to think that if you are going to give a thumbs down, it would be helpful to voice what it was that didn't make sense in the post. However, I understand that sometimes one may not have time or just can't put in the effort and that's fine too I guess.

Ofcourse, if it's a personal issue and they are giving the post because they don't happen to see more like the person posting, then that is their problem and I can think of a few things they can do with that thumb...lol...

The karmic concept of what goes around comes around may apply here. I believe these things have a way of catching up on people if they are so inclined to be negative in that way.

Anyway, some really great viewpoints and comments overall. It's all very good. I thank each and everyone who has taken the time to contribute their .02 cents.

moreso, is have the user who votes accountable for their vote. if you have something to say, let it be known, nobody is going to eat you for your thoughts, ideas, beliefs, likes, dislikes, or any of that other mumbo jumbo.

vote on. i think its kewl even if i get a thumbs down, because this is how i feel about it. i have occupied space in that persons head RENT FREE, and that just tickles me.

I am thinking maybe we should just take out the thumbs up and down?

Or how about a rating as per what houstonlively said?

What say ye?
