Trolls are bad for site and members

surfboard posted 3rd of June 2009 in Community Voice. 29 comments.

You have a web site then one day troll appears and makes all members feel like this:

-scared to post

-uncomfortable

-some leave

-avoid forums or area where troll likes to live

What can you do to get rid of trolls? Do you have a troll on your site?

All opinions and ideas please.

I am at a good site that makes community software but one member who is troll is making it hard for everyone. Making moderators work too much and scaring new members.

One troll abuse the system and they are still around. Obvious mistake to keep such members.

Vote here if you like this blog so trolls will not know you agree. Trolls get mad when they get bad votes.
sammie
perfect example of one. i have been here 2 years, not 5 minutes like the two who posted ban sammie threads lol
surfboard
thank you sammie.

now back to what this blog is about.

next please.
surfboard
sammie, there must be reason why members want you banned. Maybe because you abused the system the other day by posting threads about other members and calling out boonex?

Does defamation of character mean anything to you? To my lawyers it do. You just keep talking so we can get more evidence against you.
surfboard
I have work to do. So play nice sammie.
sammie
ha ha ha ha ok boy. what do you want me to say?

ah i abused the system for 15 minutes and yet others do it for over 18 months. and do we get all banned? or just me?
sammie
hmmm work = no net? oh wow. *sammie thinks of jobs with no net*
hmmmm street sweepers they go no net right?
hmmmm trash collecters, they got no net right?
hmmmm ya gotta help me here. what do you do?
surfboard
What twisted reasons.

15 minutes abuse or whatever time is abuse. Abuse is abuse.

Does not matter. You now admit to abusing system. Dumb move. I thought you were smarter than that. LOL!

Good work. I will screen capture this post.
sammie
screen caputer it, i told boonex already in private mail. so what?
i am happy to be banned if they ban all the trash too
surfboard
Have a good day sammie.
sammie

I am a bit reluctant to post on this blog, but i came to it thinking it was a serious question so im going to ignore whats been said before in here and answer this properly.

Well if any members have a site and its being plagued by troublesome members, you have to deal with it, you cant ignore it, and this is where moderators are so important on any site. Running a few spiritual sites as i do, the members arent even allowed to swear or be disrespectful to other members, now and then though you see more get somebody on who thinks there on facebook, or who thinks they know better than anybody else simply because they are part of some big spiritual union or other, shouting down other people's views. This upsets members and makes them nervous of posting, so i just dont allow it. Had one recently where one member part of some national Tarot union was being sarcastic flaming another Tarot reader, the other member came back and did a post basically calling her a self important snob, the next post was me and i will copy and paste this to show how it is done.

ok guys cool it there, im not having any clashes of personalities here. any further comments on this line will be deleted. respectful at all times is one of the rules, sarcasm evokes a response, and a response evokes retaliation and on it goes. Not on here please, no exceptions or else smackbot

thanks

This was the end of that, the topic carried on as normal with everybody posting properly.

the thing is, if your site gets a reputation for allowing such behaviour then it all falls down very quickly and all members start doing it, and those that dont just leave, and its not something you can risk.

Thats what I mean with make a statement. :)

we have 3 rules, 700 women on a lesbian chat is hard to keep the peace on, trust me.
1/ no men
2/ everyone verifies via cam or a phone call.
3/ no drama

5 people banned in 12 months.

you dont need rules a mile long, you need the staff and the community to part take.
any verified female member can verify others if she wants to if no staff are in chat. (user participation) get them feeling this is their site and they keep it running smooth.

me i aint had to lift a see more finger there in 2 months.
its not rocket science

I do phone validations on one of my sites as well. I also do an address and mail validation. I also charge for a membership. I figure a troll will not pay dollars only to lose it.
kernelpaniker
warn the user... then ban the user if they continue doing what you dont want them to do.
LightWolf
I say grab a BIG bottle of Jack Daniels and then everyone go outside and play nice..lol

Naw..... I'd go with Tequila.

Corona slushy for me, but getting back on topic.

If you have a community site you will at one time get trolls. Here's some info I googled http://computer.howstuffworks.com/troll1.htm

As far as this blog post, up to tyke's comment, it is unproductive and if I could I would edit it out.

houstonlively,

A Corona slushy is both a drink and a meal. PM me and I will give you the recipe.

Just to keep on topic. Trolls don't like Corona slushies.
CALTRADE
I like White Russians (just thought I would add some more negative votes to my collection). On topic, I have a forum with about 6000 members, that more or less runs itself. I used to write people and explain the rules and ask them to correct the posts. All this did was create back and forth arguments and drama - "but this guy did it, why can't I?" etc. Now I just delete them - at least the really bad ones - MLM, personal attacks, etc. No explanation, no banning members, I just delete see more the worst offending posts. People don't like having to re-write these things, and this works for me.

I would like to know what A Corona Slushy is???
DeeEmm
sorry surfboard - I liked my post more - lol :-)

Anyone know how many votes we got??

tyke,
first of all, thanks for the control intervention, that stopped the malarkey (good job) for the most part every post on here has some validity, if there were an absolute to dealing with how to manage forums and blogs, then you would be able to purchase that book. because we are all humans, and we all have different beliefs from one end of the spectrum to the other, there is no way we could ever expect the "community" as it is to agree 100% of the time on 100% of the posts. troll see more or no troll, i think everybody has the right, well not really a right, but a symbolic right of expression, the problem we are facing here, correct me if i am wrong, is the contradictory manner in which some have chosen to express. there are positively ways to debate without actually arguing, or getting into a flame-fest. the keyword here would be debate.

i have had a multitude of disagreements with a few on here, if i cant say anything good, more times than not, i just refrain from posting, and not from fear or retaliation, but just because at that moment, that didnt seem important in my life.

here is an example to ponder. if you let an individual get under your skin, and you and that person are back and forth, essentially what has happened is that person has occupied space in your head RENT FREE.

since we all know time is money, then this person has cost you money, all the while living the life of luxury in a condominium, and all for not a pence.

i guess i dont really know what a troll is, except to say from my imagination, that its a little hunchback dude under a bridge, that comes out to scare you when you are trying to cross.

Pay a toll to the troll. so to relate that term with a blog or forum instance, i dont have that vision. now a driveby, i can absolutely equate with, those are rampant on most any site you frequent.

well at any rate, glad to see some good posts coming out of an otherwise possible bad topic, but this needed to be discussed.

DeeEmm, dont know the votes, but it says 4 positive 1 negative with 27 comments. looks like there are many who just wanted to join in the conversation without really getting involved in the actual politics of this ordeal

I like the analogy - 'pay a toll to the troll'.

The votes I was referring to were on my blog, which was unfortunately deleted.
