What is permalinks and what does it do?

This setting is enabled in my settings and i'm wondering if this could be cause of my problem.. unable to view any profile.. getting the 404 error message.

yes this what is causing ur 404 error ,i had that before cause i install the new version.
so go to admin panel,advance setting and untick the permalink and it will solve the problem and u will be able to see profile and so on

i disabled the permalink and it works but what is permalink?

Permalink helps to open a user's profile from its username in dolphin site...for example, if site is boonex.us , you can open a profile like this www.boonex.us/gkcgautam
Thus it is easier to tell others about ur profile...it requires the .htaccess file in the root directory of dolphin site
