Unity Membership Levels - Request

Zarcon posted 27th of November 2009 in Community Voice. 19 comments.

Boonex Team, I had a thought that maybe you could consider creating another level of membership. There are alot of here at Unity that have contributed, not only financially, but also by exceeding in helping others with problems they have faced with the Dolphin software.

I would like to see a membership like "Dolphin Tech" (in between Contributor and Expert) or something like that for those of us who CAN help resolve problems but may not be able to develop software that interacts with Dolphin. Once a Dolphin Tech, your status would never change. I am currently a Contributor but the only way to advance is to create a mod or extension for Dolphin and go to Expert.

We have alot of good knowledgeable people here helping other members of Unity get the sites error free. I personally, as well as others, have helped many people here resolve their issues and have not once asked for a single dime (and don't want to either).  I think this would be a great appreciation for those of us who have the technical capabilities of resolving issue to be more of the "Unity Team", so to speak. You could also have a way for other members to recommend "Dolphin Techs", but of course they would have to be Contributors first.

I would appreciate your sincere consideration of this request.

Thank You,

Chris

My vote you have for your idea. It will be a honor for such helpful people like you. I for myself would help much more, but unfortunately I have very limited english languages skills and so it comes many times to misunderstandings in technical questions. But if Boonex decides one day to run unity support forums in some foreign languages, me and sure many more people will be more helpful to the community.

If you are wondering what kind of permissions this new membership level can have, I was thinking maybe these:

- The same permissions as Contributors, but the membership never expires
- The ability to post into any of the forums
- The ability to create a ticket if a bug is confirmed by more than 1 member at the same level or higher. Even if it has to go through an "approval" of some sort.

Again, Just a suggestion. Would be really nice though.

Thanks Zarcon for starting very positive blog.

I think "Dolphin Tech" even can be 1st step before contributors.

When someone join Unity and start using Dolphin, he take help of Forum and get answers of their questions.

No one only wants to take help, everyone wants to give back something which he have.

After few days or months he can be able to answer small question(not much technical).

If someone answers very clearly to freshers, Boonex can give a post to them.

If someone see more gets a honor from Boonex, he will again try to answer more technical questions as we are learning daily here at unity.

Being a Contributor and creating a mod is must needed to be an expert is little tuff and most loose interest.

Hope boonex will think positive to use the skill of Unity Members who are ready to help for free.

Good idea, but this has been requested previously, not exactly written as you have. Also would like to see this correlated with the number of posts provided in the forums.

Also to those who appreciate the suppoort from the members such as Chris, Darren, Houstonlively, dolphin_jay, jtadeo and the many others who spend their valuable time contributing to these forums, you can show your gratitude and appreciation by giving the helpful member a point for their post(s).

In the past Andrew has awarded see more adfree license to members based on the number of points acquired in the forums.

The idea is a good one Chris, and maybe when /unity transitions to D7, this added feature will be realized.

"Dolphin Tech" sounds a bit like "Pundit" ??? http://www.boonex.com/unity/id/pundits
Zarcon
Thanks everyone for your support on this. I hope that Boonex agrees just as well :)

@MichelSwiss, yes it does a bit. But unfortunately to get to Pundit, you have to be an expert first. In the situation described above, this level would be for people who were more advanced in Dolphin "technical support" so to speak.

Expert requirements : "You're required to submit, get approval of and maintain at least 1 free Extension to be an Expert"

Basically its just and idea for see more people who are very technical oriented, but not necessarily " application programmers". :)
kosmic
you dont have to be an expert to become a pundit... just to clarify :D
Zarcon
Hmm. Just going by what was stated on the membership pages. So then, how does one become a "Pundit"? :)
kosmic
it does say what you said, however a while ago there was community nominations for pundits and moderators, i was interested in community moderation but was juggling too much work at the time to put myself forward to be a moderator, however its some thing i would still consider if i was called upon to help. :D
mauricecano
How many points do pundits need?
mauricecano
Plus I vote for Zarcon's idea
DosDawg
see morei think what kosmic is talking about is that you were able to do a self-nomination for moderator and or pundit. the community would vote on your nomination and it was up to Boonex to select the pundits and moderators.

give it a shot Chris and Kosmic and see if we can get anywhere with it.

But one word of warning, be ready for hate mail~~~ LOL.

I dont see many of those who were nominated in last go round still hanging around here. HoustonLively is about the only one i see any more.

Zarcon
I hereby nominate myself as a "Pundit"!

Am I doing this right? lol

Chris
DosDawg
chris, you have to do that on a separate blog post cap'n.

i will vote for you if you post up.
