On Strike!!!

mydatery posted 19th of January 2010 in Community Voice. 31 comments.

I am currently on strike from providing any useful support of any kind due to an issue that will not be publicly discussed.  When the issue has been discussed, my views and the views of others heard and appropriately responded to I will return to provide the support that everyone has become accustomed to from me.

There is a small group of us here that provide a vast amount of support on behalf of Boonex and request very little in return for that support beyond respect.  While I do support wholeheartedly Boonex and the Dolphin Scripts, I can not at this time provide this support with certain ideologies in place by a very small number of individuals, yes it is a very small number.

I do apologize for temporarily suspending this support, but it seems to be the only solution that is available to me.  Please do not publicly inquire as to the reason for the strike as it will only cause additional issues that we would all like to avoid.  I will not be available during this time for private support either so please do not ask.

Good Luck to all of you with your sites and hopefully this will be resolved shortly and we can all return to helping each other as we have for so long.

so why did they even close expertzzz.com seems odd to me indeed. as if its a mask to help out with the other underlying issue at hand?

yeah i couldnt delete the post after i submitted, i realized it wasnt boonex, but cant edit what i posted. annoying.

That site is a good idea actually. Boonex could use an independent forum - make sure they don't lose the open source spirit as they become more commercial. Who's site is it?
buckmcgoo
I think it might be a good idea if someone made a truely free site... but most of these sites that pop up are going to just be people praying on all those people looking for help. I'm sure a lot of sites will pop up also selling all those stolen mod zip files.
As a member of Local 69 of the United Codeworkers Union, I have to support a fellow brother on the lines. Wait, no one needs my support anyway. Okay, I say let's walk that line and make a difference!

As a member of the Workers United through General Abuse (WUGA), local chapter twenty-six, I must continue offering my flawed support.

We need people like you on the forum

I hope for everyone that you change your mind
mydatery
It's not my mind that needs to change this time Daniel, it is the minds of those who have chose to close off a venue of discussion that could make an improvement in Unity that many have requested over an extended period of time.
mscott
I un-offically went on strike a year ago.. and for the same reason you are on strike now. So I just wanted to say your cause is just and I support it!

as much and as many times as we have disagreed. i am going take the stance with you. that i will not offer support in the forums until this issue is addressed. there is no need to mention the situation, as it has been discussed in detail, and was basically told it was not up for discussion.

DosDawgs Striking (unofficially) as forum freebird

will retain duties as moderator, not like they really amount to anything.
tomakali
same kinda scam service with new owners...lol
good business trends

hope the new owners of the new expertzz service take some bloody action agains scammers...
Nathan Paton
Tomakali, you do realize that Expertzzz is closing and never showing it's God-awful face again, don't you? That new web site is a third-party effort to do who knows what.

Back on topic, now: I'm wondering why no one's thought of a chant, yet. Don't you picketers have any chants you yell-out while picketing?
mscott
"Hell no we won't code! Hell no we won't code!"

How's that?
mydatery
Since the coders left it,
Unity's found a new place to dwell.
It's at the end of server road,
It'san erring out kind of hell.
The server errors in the morning,
The server errors in the afternoon,
The server errors in the evening.
And it - still - can't - get - tuned!
Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed,
Poor php coder barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was coding kinda crude,
and the answers in the forums started gettin really rude,
Bad that is,
Pretty mean,
Lousy too.....

Well the first thing ya know old Jed's right outta here,
Stopped making code and he's drinking lots of beer,
His blog posts all went missing and no one would give him points,
The beer went out the window and he started smokin joints,
Weed that is,
Columbian see more Gold,
Good ol skunk................

Well now it's time to say good-bye to Jed and all his code,
And he would like to thank you folks for speakin out real bold,
You're all invited back to again to this locality,
When things are runnin smooth again with the cast from Unity...

The powers that is, Code a spell... Take the bugs out.... Y'all post nice now, ya hear?
Nathan Paton
I said chants, not poems. Still, nice work.

Hmmm...i found another similar website, claiming the sceptre of the "Unofficial" support of Dolphin users... Seems like we have the spawn of several nuclei of support here.
tyke
im in support here of MD actions, i lost faith in the integrity of this site a while ago now and some underlying motives that seem to be simmering in its underbelly. (sorry for the wording but im trying t keep this non personnel and less of a rant) Very unique place is this, which brings up some very good questions.... The main one being, why does this place survive at all, we are all like Nero fiddling while the place burns around us. No real support from people who should give support, no real see more documentation unless you go hunting for it. Scammers and spammers everywhere you look and the only saving grace is people like MD who just give that bit extra to help... I really dont think this place will ever sort itself out.. Needs new management and a whole new "cleaner" philosophy to do that successfully ....
Nathan Paton
Actually, Nero didn't play any kind of instrument while his city burned. In fact, he actually dedicated his time to help put out the fires. Just thought I'd correct you on that. Everything else is all good.
tyke
Lol Magnussoft.. :-) well Tacitus did say it was only a rumour.. you know what they say though, "no smoke without fire".. LOL
slim007
Whilst I dont know the reason for the strike, I would like to say that without the assistance and info posted in the forums by people lile Mydatery, DosDawg
Prolazink, Caltrade, Magnussoft, Zarcon, Deano92964, houstonlively and others, I would not have my current site up and running as well as it is. I lost heart in Dolphin and left it for about 9 months, Came back for v7 so was very stale and struggled to remember even some of the basics.

Whilst its sad that some of the newbies will suffer see more through the result of this strike, I respect you guys desicion and would like to take this opportunity to thank all those mentioned and those I have left out who have contributed to helping me and lots of other (non coders). Without you guys some of us wouldnt have fully functional sites.

Thanks lads

Jim

Re-phrased!
"I might not agree with your strike but i will always support your right to strike freely."
But I do agree with, so what do i do since i can show only little help to the other members in here (since my knowledge of Dolphin is pretty much basic), what do you do then? Strike or comply?
Nice perdicaments...
meinecommunity
Not knowing what the underlying issues are, I can only respond with assumptions (ugh) that it has to do with something that IS NOT RELATED to the fact that volunteers provide assistance freely and without expectations ... that is after all the meaning of the word ... VOLUNTEER. So unless some volunteers have been done gravely wrong, intentionally, I can only shake my head sadly and remind you that the people who are actually "hurt" by such strikes are the ones who need the help the most.

I see more do understand how frustrating things can get at times. I've heavily supported an international Ubuntu site ... until it got increasingly frustrating to butt heads with people who've been on that site forever, thinking they knew everything while never updating their own knowledge in accordance to version changes - while I was at the same time providing faster, at times far more accurate results and basically getting "slapped around" for daring to know something better without the accepted ??? history of post amounts or years of membership. A severe lack of respect and very clanish behavior by the top dogs in that forum.

Well, I didn't exactly go on strike, but now my help is far more restricted in a way that when I make a helpful comment it's done in a way where those particular "forum gods" have no choice but to shut up since my answer is an absolute to which nothing more can be said. That provided me with a lot more peace of mind while I'm partialy busy at the same time creating my own Ubuntu Q&A site with hundreds of explanetory graphics. Free of course! Perhaps you too could find an alternative, other than to strike ... ???
mydatery
As I said in my OP Meinecommunity I'll not go into the reasons for the strike, outside of it has nothing to do with how people behave in the forums/blogs. And yes, I do see how that can be very frustrating. I had to bully my way in when I began to understand/comprehend dolphin before people would finally accept that I knew what I was doing. I'm not as patient as you to take your route.

With that said, yes the customers/newbies/site owners are hurt in the instance of a strike as they do suffer see more from lack of support/customer service/receiving the product. However, it is also the management that is forced to take on extra responsibility in the event of a strike to attempt to maintain whatever standard they can that is as close as possible to the non-striking version. In this instance with a strike in place it forces management to spend more time dealing with small support issues than to be developing/managing the company itself as myself and it appears some others have temporarily quit providing that support. So you see, this is a double edged sword. Please know, this is not a temper tantrum and some with the inside knowledge know other more peacful routes were attempted to deal with this before it became a strike.
