Modders selling FREE, Open Source products just SUCK

From another blog post here, it was noted that someone just blatantly ripped off the old Boonex site wholesale.  In doing some research on it, I ran across yet another example of some of the so-called Dolphin modders attempts to screw the general public.  Besides ripping off other's mods and reselling them, or packaging them up with 299 other mods for just $75 TODAY ONLY, they also take free, open source products and turn around and try to sell these to unsuspecting people.  I've seen several examples (ie:  Texas Holdem Poker, Mafia Wars and others and while some of these are actually for purchase only, amounts to the same thing)  But the most BLATANT example of greed I've run across was this one...  Webid, a free Auction software package, with a free template developed by one of their community members, being shown as a custom solution for Dolphin.  Even with a custom integration for memberships, it's just WRONG to charge this kind of money.....  It just so happens that I just recently found WeBid and integrated it into my site and happened to be using the exact same free template on my site.  I've posted two pics below as a comparison, the first from the website selling it for $300 and the one on my site which was totally free.  My personal feeling is that people like this should be  well, never mind.  Just substitute what YOU think should be done to them yourself.....

Website selling WeBid for $300

And STILL SHOWING at the bottom of the demo site of theirs is:

Copyright © 2009   Your Site.com - Open Code Source Script All Rights Reserved. Designated trademarks and brands are the property of their respective owners. Use of this Web site constitutes acceptance of the User Agreement and Privacy Policy.

And MY Site....

From my site, totally FREE

I hope this prevents someone from getting ripped off.  If YOU are looking for a FREE Auction Script for YOUR site, just go to www.webidsupport.com and download a totally free script.  And its EASY to find FREE scripts.  Check out sourceforge.net and others for all kinds of nice, free scripts.

Its funny I had the first one of the first facebook connect mods with a few extra features for sale on expertzzz, I had for sale for a week when I had a complain to high hell that it did not work so I eventually took of for sale as I really only had it built for me.

Sure enough a few months later the same person was selling the my mod with my directions word for word.....Frustrating....

HL - It makes me question the legitimacy of all of the sellers...Well not all them as I have dealt with a few and had great results but I thought that the old site was being shut down because of the nonsense it should not be allowed to continue on here.

Whats going to happen when all the fighting and craziness starts in these forums are they going to move the market again?

I dont know what the answer is but with out the market being properly moderated its just a cluster f$#$ waiting to see more happen and everyone will lose.

Well, selling free/open-source may not be very honourable practice, but it's not always illegal and may actually be beneficial.

- In fact, most of the free/open licenses allow commercial redistribution.

- In some cases, users wouldn't know about possibility of adding something to Dolphin, unless somebody would start selling it as a mod. That;s like paying for "news" or support, or idea.

---------

What's bad is when somebody's copyrights are disregarded, by, say, removal of see more copyright notices, etc. That's bad, bad, bad, should be punished, etc.

---------

So, I guess this is what community is about - sharing. IF somebody is selling a free product, you may tell the community about it and everyone would go and download it. Some would still buy, hoping for support or installation, or whatever. If somebody's copyrights are violated - tell them and they'd enforce their rights and would protect their software. BoonEx is happy to co-operate, but we can't go and verify all submissions a-priori.

Again, many VALID POINTS in the post and the comments, but let's remove any personalities from the discussion. Your opinion shoudl be expressed as an opinion.

The issue is, Andrew, "these people" (you know who) remove all traces of the original authors for everything they release. They also disregard any licenses from scripts that they use and sell and re-brands them as they please (though there are some cases where they will keep the script mostly intact, except for a statement that they themselves developed it).

I don't think any of this would be an issue at all if this hadn't happened.

In cases where copyright notices are intact, it should also be dead simple for you to see if something is copied from the work of the person who is complaining or not.

So now we all agree that ripping off others' work while removing their names, comments and copyright see more notices is BAD, BAD, BAD, should be punished, etc. Let's frame that on the office wall and smile.
I want to buy this type of mode for my site www.gbnet.in I you have then contact me through boonex or admin@gbnet.in
