Membership packages, promotions & handling

Hi folks,

After playing around a bit with D7RC, I have started molding my site. In process, I decided to write my first blog and seek some help from the community. In this blog. I would like to focus on 'memberships'.

So, I put some thought process on what kind of 'membership' packages I should create for my site, which I would like to share and would also like to know from experienced/other members what kind of 'membership' packages they are currently using on their sites or they plan to use in future. What works or what does not works? What kind of promotions they use? What are the choices for names? How do they handle it? etcI know at the end of the day the package depends upon the site niche but let's talk about the generic packages that can apply to most of the sites.

I am planning to make a music based site and here are the packages i am thinking to start with -

Package - A

Free - This would be a view-only privilege on all modules and user would also be able to chat, use whiteboard, shoutbox etc.

Premium - $10/month. View + Upload privileges on all modules.(maximum upload limit of 10 items per month for each module e.g. store, sites, ads etc).

V.I.P - $30/month - Unlimited privileges on all modules.

Package - B

Free - This would be a view-only privilege on all modules but user will not be able to use chat, shoutbox, whiteboard etc

Basic - $5/month. View + Upload privileges on all modules.(maximum upload limit of 5 items per month for each module e.g. store, sites, ads etc).

Premium - $10/month. View + Upload privileges on all modules.(maximum upload limit of 10 items per month for each module e.g. store, sites, ads etc).

V.I.P - $30/month - Unlimited privileges on all modules.

and so on...

Regarding promotions, I was thinking something about this to start with:

Promotion A for Package A-

VIP membership would be $10 for first 100 users.

VIP membership would be $20 for first 100-500 users.

Promotion B for Package B-

Pay $10 for 1 month premium membership and get 1 month free for first 100 customers.

and so on....

My main concern is how do you guys handle it? What's the easiest way to handle 'memberships'?

So folks, throw in your packages/promotions etc that makes sense to you and I am sure it would help the community a lot.

So, you mean you'd like to offer different membership levels to different types of users? For example, you have four types of users: Aficionado, DJ, Band, Sponsor. Then , to each user-type, you'd offer various subscription alternatives entitling them to different privileges.

So, say the "Clubber" gets to "view" most of the stuff, but only "premium Clubbers" get to do downloads....

Djs get to do a few things, but are only allowed to upload their sound clips if they see more are "Premium DJs", etc.?

If this is more or less what you are thinking, AntonLV came out with a mod for D6 that is very good at keeping your user-types tidy (http://www.expertzzz.com/Downloadz/view/3322). You could go for something like this.

However, perhaps the simplest way to get started is to offer very few memberships and no user-types. For example: Clubber (free), DJ (premium, but allows x privileges), Band (+ expensive + privileges + higher disk space for uploads...), Sponsor (+ expensive + features such as advertising)?

Thanks JL
Yeah, thats exactly what i meant. I liked your idea and names like Clubber, DJ, Band, Sponsor etc. Not too sure if D7 allows you to control upload disk space at membership/profile levels though....

One other way way would be to have a rewards mod (might be D7.1 will have this) and reward the users based upon the points they gained through posting blogs, videos, music etc

Would be fun to see more idea's coming...

i already talk about that sooooooo much time before... dolphin should not only set membership for action by time... but also set limit about disk space and bandwidth for each user vs membership....

I'm considering a membership based system as well, it's difficult to produce such a concept for attracting subscribers. I too struggle with that.

One thing I have to consider is disk space... if I allowed video uploads, the D7 (as far as I know) doesn't limit how big it can be uploaded, does it?

Support was asked this about photo upload size for 5,000 members. The numbers presented are hard to estimate accurately but it gives you an idea.

"if every of 5,000 members upload 200 photos see more 200kb each, that will be around 95 gigabytes. ffmpeg has nothing to do with pictures, they are processed by GD Library, and the pictures get resized physically. Every image is stored in original and resized state, so, the originals are also stored. Also, every image will have a preview image (20 kb) and a thumbnail image (3 kb)."

I asked if things were resized proportionally (3x5 stays in those proportions) - "Yes!" This does make it harder to calculate, though, since it stores originals AND whatever it resizes to.

that in mind, it was only for images... now videos... oh boy! I don't even know how much a 5 minute recorded video will produce at 100% quality!

We may be talking in TBs instead of GBs.
