How Good is Boonex's word?

mydatery posted 10th of March 2010 in Community Voice. 15 comments.

Many months ago we had a large uproar in regards to stolen modifications being resold over on the Unity site an other things that were uncovered.  At that time, Boonex admitted the ability to moderate the Expertzzz site as it simply lacked the technology for it and would require to many upgrades to get it under control.  The solution, close expertzzz.com, which has basically happened now, and open a new Market here on Unity.

This new "Market" was supposed to, as we were told:

  1. Get rid of the scammers
  2. Protect the Modders/Developers from having our work stolen
  3. Protect those who are purchasing the Modifications/Templates/Plugins in the Unity Market

What we have seen:

  1. Stolen Mods Posted
  2. Stolen Mods allowed to stay up
  3. Modders paying $20 a month or $120 a year to be able to post mods.
  4. Additional fees to get a Modification/Template/Plug-In "Certified"

The only thing that we, the coders/developers/designers are seeing is:

  1. Boonex lining their pockets with fees from us.
  2. Our hard work being stolen and listed right next to ours and Boonex getting paid for that too by the theifs.

In the end, I and many others, see absolutely no benefit to us in this new system.  I have held off on posting any of my work on the new Unity Market until such time as it becomes evident that what happened on Expertzzz.com does not happen on Unity.  I am thrilled that I have taken that hard line and protected my work.  I have seen good sales via word of mouth and demoing of my work to the members of Unity and been able to avoid the theft many of you are going through.

With this in mind, don't think I'm abandoning my fellow coders/developers/designers.  I am backing you up 100% in this endeavor and will handle things in this way as it appears that Boonex can not seem to figure out a way to keep their word on the promises they made us:

I will still provide support to the members of Unity.  This will NOT be done in a public manner.

I will refer my clients/customers to those who have built a reputation of fair work for fair pay.  I have already sent out a few referrals.  When I refer to you I will send you an e-mail with the member name who is looking for help and let you know what my experience with them has been.

I will NOT post any coding/development/design work myself in the Market, Blogs and/or Forums of Unity.

I will limit the public support that is given out by me in regards to D6 and D7.

What is the goal?

That Boonex takes note.  There are members of Unity who have been around alot longer than I have who work damn hard everyday to help out this community.  These members use their own personal imagination, skills, experience and wisdom to help develop Dolphin into the amazing product it is today and they deserve the basic respect they are given.  Boonex is located in Australia, the vast majority of these Good Members are NOT in Australia.  The policy that Boonex insulted us with in the blog posts in regards to this issue is despicable to say the least and as such they can begin to pay people to provide the free support that we, the coders/developers/designers have been giving out for years.

Pay attention Andrew:  I'm not the biggest support giver here, but this is complete and total bullshit that you have just told these guys that do give out the major support around here that they either allow their stuff to be stolen or leave.  The last time we had a small strike on Unity (only a couple months ago) it caused a larger load on the Agents and complaints from the Agents were forthcoming.  I'm not calling this a strike yet, I'm calling it a stand.  The Agents get paid to provide support, and then they give a very limited support level at that.  The members do NOT get paid to give support and we the members handle the vast majority of it.

Unity is supposed to be a community.  A community is only as good as those who govern it.  As the governing body of Unity you have chosen to basically crap on your people and say you don't give a rat's behind about us.  Well, then why should we support you?  Please tell us why we should run your software?  Why should we run our test servers on our dimes to help your end users?  Why should we post fixes to bugs that exist in the software?  Why should we help out with Bug Reports getting into Trac?  Why should we explain so many things to those who pay you when you won't give us this basic human respect.

In the end I'm an asshole and I know it.  I'm also the one who will stand up when a wrong is done and yell the loudest.  Am I pissed, you damn skippy right I am.  You have insulted every single honest member of those software project and told them you only care about the dollar that ends up in your pocket.  You have told them that if they want a stolen item down and to be protected they can take it to court.  Guess what?  Your in Australia, you don't have to obey any court order from anywhere except Australia.  The vast majority of these guys really have no true access to the courts in Australia and you do have an obligation to back up those who pay you for the right to list items for sale.

It's truly time for all to band together and that we stand up for what is right.  We have basic human rights and Boonex has no rights to trample them.

Agreed. I myself wrote a number of mods and either gave them away for free (later to see them being sold by others without so much as removing my original pics of my own site), mods that I DID sell I sold for anywhere from $5 to $15 or so (with the exception of some templates which I spent long hours developing and testing for 100% compatibility in all browsers and with Orca changes included). After the experiences with the thieves over on Expertzz, I decided to wait and see what happened here see more before paying a dime to sell my mods. I've decided against selling anything here. While I was making a little bit for my efforts, I am more concerned about my reputation in the community. I would always like to be known as someone who has contributed in some small way and who has never taken advantage of anyone's limited knowledge of Dolphin for my own gain. I am still always available if someone has a question that I have a sure answer for. What I foresee happening here is that fewer and fewer of the REALLY knowledgeable people who have contributed so much in the past will feel like doing so much any more. That is really the sad part in all of this. People are getting so disgusted with the things they see going on that they just don't feel it's worth their time or trouble to help out much anymore.
Agreed as well.
Some members here have banded together since last year from here and there is greener grass on another side where Dolphin is not alone in providing the goods.
Boonex should listen to their community members on this, as we do to ours.

I also agree mydatery. This is not right.

Nothing like vox populi to get things moving! When you can't vote with your hand, you can always vote with your feet, and at one point or another someone will have to wake up and understand that there's a need to listen to your customers --- that is, unless you are hell-bent on driving your company down to the ground! I don't know, perhaps in the grand scheme of things Boonex has other revenue sources and it's just not as important to pay too much attention on the customer service and satisfaction see more frontier. (In which case it's good to be up-front and say that we just don't care.)

"either allow their stuff to be stolen or leave" - I didn't say that, and I didn't mean that. I was implying that we can't determine who's right with 100% accuracy and, therefore members can't claim that we should perform certain actions until there's legal order to do so.

I realize that in 99,999999% of the cases this won't go as far as to substantiate in a court order, so it's more common sense and good practices that should moderate Unity. So, like I said in my post, we will go by see more common sense.

I am trying to stop the flood of "remove this immediately" emails clogging my inbox.

I supplied VictorT a couple months back, at the time of the strike, of e-mails in my expertzzz.com inbox that displayed [edited out by Andrew Boon]. Nothing happened. Others have done this with him and you guys claim that he agreed to not do it again, apologized and so on. While we show he is still doing it nothing happens. The apologies are nothing but false promises given with a smirk.

In regards to your post, that is how it was perceived by myself and many others. You know that the vast see more majority of these guys can't get this into a courtroom due to lack of funds and such to go through the legal process. It's harder in most places than it is here in the US. But when you take money from us in exchange for the right to post mods then you are assuming a certain amount of responsibility for what is being posted. Many times you can just look at the date the mod was posted and make the logical conclusion beyond a "reasonable doubt" as to what belongs to whom. A closer look and it's becomes blatant when the words of one when compared to the other and posting dates as to ownership rights.

In the end, we the members of this community, provide the support to this community and we do it for free, when those members feel they are being dumped on then it becomes less agreeable for them to continue to provide the support that they have been providing, at which point Boonex will have to step up and begin to foot the bill for the agents to do it.

Can you please show me in all of that where I'm trying to "sell" you anything? Please do. Because all I see in the first part of that is a basic good 'ole but chewing and the answer to the question you keep asking all over the place but don't want to pay Anton for the mods to do. We all know a Profile Splitter and Dependent Fields are Anton's mods and only Anton has the source code/query file for the splitter. So again, where am I selling you anything?

Further, quit trying to hijack see more blogs to meet your own needs and try to keep it on topic please. The topic has to do with the Blog Posts made by multiple individuals including Boonex and the stance that UnoBoonex stated in his blog post at that time.

As far as my true nature goes, I volunteer it. I'm a jerk, arsehole, deekhead or whatever you want to call me, I don't care. But I do care when you make false statements about me, those I will deal with off site in the manner previously described to you in this very blog's comment section, just so no one mis-understands that.

We're all hands on fixing problem on Unity now. Some parts went out of control, and we really concentrated on development more than moderation. Should be much better now.

How Good is Boonex's word?

How about ou sell us your Twisted Dolphin ?

Unoboonex, I fail to see your problem.

If a paying member raises doubts as to the authenticity of a program being sold, that product should be suspended until the issue is clarified.

That in itself would resolve issues like this.

You have moderators, ask one of them to monitor this, they will have sole responsibility (to Boonex) for resolving such issues.

Strange that anyone would need to post the bleeding obvious.
Andrew Boon
The problem is that some paying members have their own interests, and "issues" are always different, while we have limited resources, especially when it comes to code examination.

Yes I was rather wondering about the mod certification process and your certification officers (a week ago or so); since a good deal of the names I saw on the list are not developers as far as I understand, but rather on par with a skilled Dolphin end-user. How many code crunchers do you actually have in your ranks? (If you don't mind me asking.)
Ok, ( Not an Attack )

[Edited out by Andrew Boon. Coz it was an attack.]
I love dolphin, when you buy mods it says where to play codes, but what if you decide to make more money on your designs?

Any ideas???

Well here is one, how about you do a step by step pdf and video tutorials explaining what each php code (Variables, constants, class, objects etc...) means, and how it will make that function work.

thanks for making mods, I basically know what each mod code does, I am talking about people who don't understand php, java, html, css...
